The century following Duke Humphrey's death has transmitted an image of "the Good Duke" that modern historiography may find misleading. Contemporary scholarship is interested in his role as the promoter of humanism in fifteenth-century England; yet, though in the course of his life there were acknowledgements of his patronage, the years immediately following his death saw his image undergo a metamorphosis. His role as a proto-humanist was quickly forgotten, while the political resonance of his death made later scholars overlook his unsuccessful career as a politician. Humphrey's death created a major sensation, and after the fall of the Lancasters it was quickly exploited for propaganda purposes by the York faction first, and by the Tudors afterwards. Humphrey haunts Elizabethan drama and Ovidian epistles, appears as an improbable Wycliffite in Foxe's "Acts" and as a wise man of the world in More's "Dialogue Concerning Heresies". The present article takes Duke Humphrey and his afterlives as a case study for the examination of the role of propaganda in literary/political biography.

Autor zaliczany jest do grona wybitnych postaci związanych z początkami dyplomacji Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki oraz do kręgu czołowych intelektualistów dwóch kontynentów: Ameryki i Europy. Jego bogate życie i liczne zasługi nadały mu rangę wielkiego męża stanu, ale też wszechstronnego, typowego dla Ameryki, przedstawiciela pionierów na tym kontynencie, był bowiem w jednej osobie: żołnierzem amerykańskiej wojny wyzwoleńczej, kapelanem Armii Kontynentalnej, businessmanem, bankowcem, adwokatem, wydawcą, myślicielem, bojownikiem wolności, podróżnikiem, odkrywcą i wychowawcą. Nauki pobierał w Dartmouth College, a w 1778 ukończył studia na słynnym uniwersytecie Yale. Joel Barlow to jeden z twórców amerykańskiej poezji. Już w roku ukończenia Yale opublikował swój pierwszy poemat "The Prospect of Peace", w którym piętnował niewolnictwo. Z kolei w wydanym w 1787 roku dziewięciotomowym poemacie alegorycznym "The Vision of Columbus" wieszczył wizję przyszłej wielkiej Ameryki i ogólnoludzkiego braterstwa. W 1788 roku wybrał się do Francji, gdzie żywo zainteresował się ideami republikańskimi, by w rezultacie wziąć udział w Rewolucji Francuskiej. W 1791, za pośrednictwem Louisa Littepage'a, skierował list do Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego. W korespondencji tej chwalił dzieło Konstytucji 3 maja i wspominał udział Tadeusza Kościuszki w wojnie o niepodległość Stanów Zjednoczonych. W 1792 roku, z inspiracji swojego przyjaciela Thomasa Paine'a, napisał i opublikował w Anglii niniejszy, radykalny traktat polityczny Advice to the Privileged Orders in the Several States of Europe…( Przestroga ku rozwadze stanom uprzywilejowanym w różnych krajach europejskich…), w którym rozwija tezę, że zadaniem państwa jest strzeżenie dobra wspólnego wszystkich klas społecznych, a nie jedynie klas uprzywilejowanych. Konserwatywna Anglia nie była zadowolona z takich publikacji. Esej został uznany przez rząd brytyjski za dzieło wywrotowe i objęto go zakazem publikacji. W 1793 roku ukazał się w New York Magazine utwór The Hasty-Pudding. A poem in three cantos, do dzisiaj jeden z najbardziej znanych utworów wczesnej poezji amerykańskiej. Jako mąż stanu był, m.in. konsulem amerykańskim w Algierze, w latach 1795-1797. W roku 1805 wrócił do Ameryki i przez następne lata mieszkał pod Waszyngtonem. W grudniu 1812 Barlow znalazł się w Warszawie. Podczas podróży do Krakowa nabawił się ciężkiego przeziębienia i zapalenia płuc. W krytycznym stanie dotarł do Żarnowca, gdzie mimo udzielenia pomocy lekarskiej zmarł i został pochowany na przykościelnym cmentarzu. Es handelt sich um die erste zusammenhängende Ausgabe mit Kommentar des Kalenderhandbuches, das mit seinen Texten eine wichtige Quelle zur Geschichte, Verwaltung und zu den religiösen Mentalitäten in der Stadt Rom im 4. Jahrhundert n.Chr. darstellt. ; The first coherent and handy edition with commentaries of one oft he most important sources for history, administration and religious mentalities of the city of Rome in the 4th century A.D. ; The collection of pictures, lists and short notes, known as the "Chronography of 354" or the "Calendar of Filocalus" is a calendar handbook for the year 354 C.E. Of the thirteen texts, four are Christian documents; the remaining are witnesses of Roman administration and provide no clue for Christianity, or at times even attestations to the Roman religiosity of the Republic and the Imperial Time. The handbook contents can be distinguished by whether it has pictures or just text. Given the complexity of the present form of its constituents, the calendar handbook is an important source for the politic administrative history of the late-Constantine time, for the history of the transformation of religious mentalities, and for the success of the story of Christianity in the city of Rome. The following texts are especially noteworthy: (1) The consular fasti from the beginning of the consulate up to the year 354 CE, for the Roman History and the families that dominated it; (2) the yearly calendar for those festivals celebrated in late-Constantine time with their political and religio-historical dimension, which influenced the history of everyday life of the city; (3) the Catalogus Liberianus, the oldest Roman book of the popes, which together with the lists of the Deposito episcoporum and the Deposito martyrum, the oldest feriale of any Christian Church, is important for the Church of Rome and its conception of history. Notwithstanding a century-long history of editions and commentaries of the calendar handbook, there is up to the present no connected edition and commentary of the pertinent texts, only critical editions of individual parts. This is related to the complex tradition process and the preserved late manuscripts of the 16th and the 17th Century. This poses a range of problems, which this edition and its commentaries tackle: (a) what all was part of the original calendar (b) when did the different texts and their redactions, which lead to the expansions, come into being (c) the perennial research problem of the relationship between the traditional Roman religion and Christianity, for which the texts of the chronographs provide crucial evidence (d) the position of the calendar handbook in the history of book illustration in Late Antiquity. Furthermore, since Mommsen's classical edition, a host of individual problems have been identified, which affect very different scientific endeavours, ranging from the studies of classical antiquities to theology and from cultural sciences to astronomy.
