La strada di casa. Il ritorno in Italia dei sopravvissuti alla Shoah ; The way back home. The return in Italy of the holocaust survivors
; This survey is focused on all those Italian people who survived to the Holocaust and try to investigate and narrate all the trials, efforts and fears6 that they had to face to come back home after having experienced the deportation. A history of travel? Maybe, but especially a voyage tracing a history made of reconstruction, meeting and desertion, after the extreme experience in the concentration camps; the narration of the denial of humanity neglecting the survivors. This research begins in considering that every event should be considered in his historical context and compared with this background. Thus, lead us to the first chapter that is focused on the definition of the 'space' surrounding the protagonists of the story itself. According to two main different points of view: on the one hand the diachronic one (Storia di guerra) which tries to retrace the story of all Italian people captured during the Second World War, and on the other one the synchronic point of view (Storia di pace) narrating the phase of repatriation in Italy and investigating the role and institutional responsibility of the Italian Government in managing this particular phenomenon. In analyzing the Italian institutional apparatus itself, this survey goes on portraying two dimensions: the real one, retracing the repatriation itself (itineraries, datas, historical events) and the symbolic one, in which we can find the deep historical and moral meaning of this voyage towards home. In the second part of this survey, the investigation is focused on Auschwitz-Birkenau during the last few months before the Liberation (Death Marches): an important phase through which retracing the stories and itineraries of Italian survivors. The last chapter investigate the history of the Lager after the liberation, in particularly the first aid and Red Army's interests to take advantage of survivors manpower; moreover several individual experiences are reconstructed. The period taken into consideration in this survey goes from the liberation of concentration camps to the end of 1945, even if in the chapters the research is also about the previous and the next historical context. 6 This expression is by Primo Levi, La tregua, Einaudi, Torino, 1989, p. 178.

The object of this essay is to illustrate how the memory of the Foibe has been diffused in the Italian media since the end of the Second World War. In particular, this text will explore how certain paradigms of representation, which are characteristic of the memory of the Holocaust, have also been adopted to portray the group of violent events which we collectively call Foibe. These public discourses have been particularly reaffirmed during the last thirty years. Initially, we will introduce the subject with a brief historiographical reconstruction of how the theme of the Holocaust has been compared to the Foibe by historians. A second part will follow in which we will dive into the institutional politics that have been bent to the creation of a public memory of the Foibe based on that comparison. In the final part, we will analyze the modalities through which the paradigm of the Foibe/Holocaust has found effective expression through the realization of TV transmissions and fictional televised programs on the subject. Via the analysis of several moments, we will see how certain rhetorical and metaphorical themes persist out of preceding representations of the Holocaust, which were facilitated by the same media channels.

Coscienza di classe, identità ebraica e zona grigia. Per una rilettura politica di «Kapò»
The aim of this essay is to link the Marxist concept of "class consciousness" to the analysis of the evolution of the character of Edith (Susan Strasberg) in Gillo Pontecorvo's 1959 movie Kapò. Here, in fact, Pontecorvo and Solinas (the screenwriters) choose to put at the center of the film a direct reference of what Primo Levi called the "gray zone", that vast ambiguous and paradoxical area that extends between the persecutors and the victims of the Holocaust. In particular, we refer to the story of Edith, a Jewish girl deported to Auschwitz who, by the time she arrived, decided to take the opportunity of change her identity in a political prisoner, thus escaping to death. Just entered the camp, she becomes a Kapò, a victim that the inhumane conditions of the Lager forced to become a collaborator of the persecutors, and then a perpetrator. The Lager in Pontecorvo's intentions is nothing more than a transposition of society in the Marxist sense, in which the Nazi executioners metaphorically represent the bourgeois classes, while the victims are the proletarian classes oppressed by history and reduced to a subordinate condition. Starting from this, the character of Edith puts on a real awareness of her social condition (class), and at the same time of her identity. And it is precisely from the intersection between class consciousness and religious identity that the paper will begin, with the aim of giving an account both of the Marxist interpretation of the society made by Pontecorvo through the representation of the Lager, and of the "gray" historical condition of its ambiguous protagonist - also through a conclusive analysis of the Italian political reception of the film.

; The present study aims to analyse the legal treatment of the crime of denialism by the two main actors in European justice, namely, the European Union ('EU') and the European Court of Human Rights ('ECtHR'). Presently, these two systems find themselves in a delicate position: they must cherish and protect the memory of an historical event – the Holocaust – which is central to Europe's own identity, while simultaneously promoting respect for fundamental rights such as the freedom of speech. This unique balance raises a need for a thorough investigation into Europe's approach to the crime of denialism. The dissertation's first section seeks to measure the scope of EU-imposed obligations to make denialism a crime. Notably, the impact on EU Member States of the Framework Decision 2008/913/JHA on racism and xenophobia is assessed, with illustrations of a few archetypal examples of domestic implementing legislation. The second part of the dissertation turns to the jurisprudence of the ECtHR to examine the relationship between Holocaust denial as a crime and the right to freedom of expression, with a view to deducing the principles under which States must comply in the criminalization of this kind of utterance. The work's overall goals are to assess: a) the nature of interactions between the EU and ECtHR; b) whether their positions on denialism are better portrayed in terms of contrast or mutual support; c) the legal nature and content of the obligations originating for the Member States; d) whether a Europe-wide criminal prohibition on denialism is dictated or simply encouraged; and e) whether such a prohibition would be desirable, and if so, under what conditions.

At the end of WWII, the Holy See & the Red Cross were criticized for having kept silent on the tragedies that took place during the war, in particular, for not having publicly denounced the horrors of the Holocaust & not taking a stand against the slaughters & the persecutions they witnessed. Due to irreconcilable differences, the two entities never cooperated, but they reached the same conclusion & chose to act similarly in their mission to defend & protect military & civilian war victims. Facing the possibility of a more limited chance to help, they preferred to keep the silence & operate secretly, which ended up hurting their public image. M. Williamson

The German Nazis planned to annihilate the Jewish nation. The Holocaust reached immense proportions on Polish lands, which had been the dwelling place for thousands of Jews for ages. Therefore, the Germans located several death camps on the territory of the occupied Poland. The Poles did not remain passive towards the persecution of the members of the Chosen People living next to them, with many priests and men and women religious committing themselves to rescuing Jews. This issue has not yet been fully explored. The article presents the attitudes of the Polish Catholic Bishops providing aid to Jews during the Second World War. They became involved in the following actions: they issued petitions in defence of Jews and informed pope Pius XII about the persecution of Jews, intervened with the occupation authorities and defended converts, they were personally involved in assisting and saving the lives of the members of the Jewish community, as well as supported clergymen and organizations helping Jews. ; Fonti d'archivio: Archiwum Akt Nowych (AAN) [Archivio degli Atti Nuovi], RGO (Kraków), 5, Lettera dell'arcivescovo mons.
