"In der Transformationsliteratur zu Rußland dominieren pessimistische Annahmen bezüglich der Durchsetzung von Demokratie und Marktwirtschaft, begleitet von einem, kulturhistorisch nicht neuen, Bild des 'dunklen Ostens'. Hieraus resultieren Katastrophenszenarien, in denen Rußland als globaler 'Modernisierungshemmer' erscheint. Die These ist, daß dabei die Gradualität der Prozesse und die kulturelle Dimension der Transformation zu wenig beachtet werden. Anhand empirischer Untersuchungen sollten Problemkomplexe, die in den 'worst case' - Studien einen hohen Rang einnehmen, neu geprüft werden, insbesondere die Rolle des Nationalismus und die Bedeutung der polarisierenden ökonomischen Differenzierung. Trotz der Unzahl quasi-nationalistischer Ideologeme sind keine konkreten Kräfte sichtbar, die aus der russischen Gesellschaft eine 'nationale Gemeinschaft' zu formen in der Lage wären. Ethnische Orientierungen stellen zwar wichtige Identifikationsangebote, eignen sich aber nur bedingt - und nicht auf allen Ebenen - zur politischen Mobilisierung. Das Ausbleiben der häufig prognostizierten sozialen Konflikte sollte den Blick auf Potentiale der Selbstorganisation jenseits 'mafiöser' Vergemeinschaftungen lenken. Zu fragen wäre, ob etablierte Bedarfsausgleichssysteme, als Ergebnis der partiellen Modernisierung, nicht auch stabilisierend wirken und sich deshalb als Übergangslösung eignen." (Autorenreferat)

En URSS, l'attachement à l'islam s'exprime moins par le respect des pratiques religieuses que par une vie et une organisation sociales non conformes. Il est sûr, en effet, que les critères étroitement religieux ne seraient guère opératoires, vu les obstacles que rencontre la pratique : par exemple, la réduction du nombre de mosquées (25 000 en 1917, quelque 200 aujourd'hui), le pèlerinage à La Mecque est évidemment impossible, sauf à titre exceptionnel pour un muphti ; le strict respect du Ramadan est peu compatible avec l'organisation du travail, les rituels de la prière sont difficiles à observer dans les grandes villes, etc. Qu'à cela ne tienne, les autorités musulmanes (quatre muphtiats) s'efforcent de trouver des accommodements : une prière par jour « suffit » si on ne peut en pratiquer plus et convient le pèlerinage aux lieux saints locaux, tels la tombe de Iassawi ou Chah i Zende. Quant au jeûne, il suffit de l'observer un jour au moins et si ce n'est pas possible, il faut alors accomplir ce jour-là un effort particulier dans la vie spirituelle ou la vie du travail.

Der russische Philosoph und Schriftsteller Aleksandr Sinowjew, früher ein unerbittlicher Kritiker des Kommunismus, nennt jetzt den Kommunismus "die grandioseste Periode" in der russischen Geschichte und fordert zu einer Rückkehr zu den Vor-Perestrojka-Zuständen auf. Sinowjew hat immer Anspruch auf strenge Objektivität und kühle Wissenschaftlichkeit erhoben, verstößt nunmehr aber beständig gegen dieses Prinzip. Den Hintergrund für die Metamorphose Sinowjews bildet die Krise des russischen Denkens angesichts der gesellschaftspolitischen Erschütterungen, die den Systemwandel begleiten. (BIOst-Srt)

It is often asserted that the values and attitudes of Homo Sovieticus, marked in the rising "popularity" of Stalin, live on in contemporary Russia, acting as a negative factor in social and political development. This article critiques the argument that attitudes to Stalin reflect unreformed Soviet values and explain Russia's authoritarian regression and failed modernization. Our critique of this legacy argument has three parts. First, after examining the problematic elements of the Levada Center approach, we offer alternative explanations for understanding quantitative data on Stalin and the repressions. Second, we examine interview data showing that, for those with a pro-Stalin position, "defending Stalin" is only a small part of a broader worldview that is not obviously part of a "Soviet legacy." Third, we consider survey data from the trudnaia-pamiat' project and find common reluctance to discuss much of the Stalinist past, which we argue represents an agonistic stance. Thus, we interpret attitudes to Stalin within a broader context of complex social and cultural transformation where the anomie of the 1990s has been replaced with dynamics toward a more positive identity construct. On the one hand, the antagonistic mode of memory is visible in statist and patriotic discourses, which do not seriously revolve around Stalin but do resist strong criticism of him. On the other hand, we find many more in Russia avoid the Stalin question and adopt an agonistic mode, avoiding conflict through a "de-politicized" version of history.
