This thesis focuses on the role that cities occupy in films, on the urban traits they project, and on the geopolitical values of such representations to the governing State. Films not only provide structure for our imaginations, they also play a part in the perception of 'realness': how we perceive the real world in our daily lives, establishing a connection between our knowledge and our beliefs. As such, they construct the framework in which we view the world and also influence our representations and perceptions. As such, they become political tools, used as mass influencers by the State.Focusing on the analysis of how Hong Kong is represented in films and also on the impact these representations have on Chinese soft power, this thesis examines the metropolis of Hong Kong and its relationship with China, but also questions the People's Republic of China's newly placed importance on the idea of soft power, as well as the way its territories are represented in films. Taking into account Western approaches of cinematographic representations of Hong Kong, especially those originating from Hollywood, but also representations originating from Hong Kong, this thesis questions the way in which the West appropriates the notion of 'otherness'. C'est à ce titre qu'ils deviennent des outils politiques et participent aux stratégies d'influence étatiques.En focalisant l'analyse sur la représentation ciné-géographique de Hong Kong et sur son impact pour le soft power chinois, ce travail de recherches interroge la métropole hongkongaise et son rapport à la Chine, mais également l'importance nouvelle que la République Populaire accorde au soft power, ainsi que la place que tiennent le cinéma et les représentations cinématographiques de son territoire, dans sa politique d'influence. En prenant en compte les représentations cinématographiques de la métropole hongkongaise produites par Hollywood, cette thèse questionne enfin la manière dont l'Occident se saisit d'un territoire de l' « ailleurs ». À ce titre, elle interroge non seulement la relation spatiale et symbolique entre ici et autre part, mais aussi entre nous et autrui.

The meaning of this term in itself is quite vague and there are lots of variations, depending on the scholars who may have flown over this subject; seldom are they historians. Another significant aspect is that the notion of French presence also covers many different realities. It is a polysemous term which, as yet, has never been given a clear and proper definition yet, at least among historians. In order to explore those tracks, using Hong Kong during interwar period as a search field was thought to be relevant.It is an active parenthesis on a territory animated by multiple influences; the British colony is on China's doorstep, a neighbour of Indochina, and it has known quite a number of developments and upheavals between 1918and 1941.The purpose of this work is to gather different forms of the French presence, often studied separately and individuallyin other geographical and historic contexts, in order to offer a complete picture of what this concept really means. This is an opportunity to debate on the contemporary notions of fFrench people abroad and Third Culture. Because of the geographical and political specificities of Hong Kong during the interwar period, in what way can we consider that the British colony is playing a particular role for France in the area ? And, on this basis, how can it be considered a privileged observatory of the life of French people abroad at that time? Those questions are obviously hiding many others because French presences suppose the existence of a lively and heterogeneous community, but also a material and sometimes abstract implantation. ; Il n'existe pas, à proprement parler, une histoire des Français de l'étranger. La définition même de ce terme reste floue et connaît de nombreuses variantes selon les auteurs qui se sont penchés sur le sujet ; ces derniers sont d'ailleurs rarement des historiens. Autre constat, le concept de présence française recouvre une multitude de réalités. C'est un terme polysémique qui n'a pas encore reçu, chez les historiens du moins, de définition claire et précise. Pour explorer ces pistes, il a semblé que Hong Kong dans l'entre-deux-guerres était un terrain propice.C'est une parenthèse active sur un territoire aux influences multiples ; la colonie britannique est aux portes de la Chine, voisine de l'Indochine, et elle connaît des développements et des remous nombreux entre 1918 et1941.L'ambition de ce travail est d'assembler les différentes formes de la présence française, souvent étudiées individuellement dans d'autres cadres chronologiques ou géographiques, pour offrir un tableau complet de ce que signifie réellement ce terme et réfléchir aux concepts contemporains de Français de l'étranger et de culture tierce. Au regard des spécificités géographiques et politiques de Hong Kong dans l'entre-deux-guerres, en quoi peut-on dire que la colonie britannique joue un rôle particulier pour la France, et qu'à ce titre, elle est un observatoire privilégié de la vie des Français de l'étranger à cette époque ? Since its handover to mainland China in 1997, Hong Kong has been able to benefit from its unique system to establish itself as a platform between China and the rest of the world. The Special Administrative Region now intends to renew this role as part of President Xi Jinping's "Belt and Road Initiative". If Hong Kong was, at the time of China's opening in the 1980s, a key driver of the mainland economic growth, we can now observe a reversal of the economic balance of power to the advantage of China, thus implying a growing political influence of the latter in Hong Kong. This study analyses the economic, and to a lesser extent, political implications of Hong Kong's participation in the "Belt and Road initiative", public institutions and mechanisms created for this purpose, as well as the involvement of private actors. The cities of Chongqing and Hong Kong are both located at hilly areas which are highly populated, with buildings and major highways located very close to slopes and earth-retaining structures. Landslides and rockfalls are very common in both cities, and large expenditures are being incurred by both Governments on the investigation, design and implementation of mitigation and preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of the loss of life and economic losses due to landslides. As a result of the collaborative studies and technical exchange programs between the University of Hong Kong and the Chongqing Jianzhu University, a more in-depth understanding of the landslide problem, methodology and mitigation measures in Chongqing and Hong Kong was achieved. The objective of this paper is therefore to: (1) highlight the similarities and differences of the slope safety problems which these cities have been facing and (2) present and compare the key technical approaches these two cities have been undertaken to reduce the risk of landslide and rockfalls, so that both cities could benefit from the experience and lesson learnt. Based on the review of literature and published case records, it is concluded that the city of Chongqing has to deal with natural hazards such as earthquake, river erosion and flooding more than that in Hong Kong, but both cities have been applying practical and latest technology to mitigating the landslide problem. It is recommended that the city of Chongqing should consider establishing a sustainable long-term landslide management plan and that the landslide prevention system being used in Hong Kong could be a good reference starting point. © 2004 Elsevier B.V.
