Trzecia wojna światowa – realne zagrożenie czy mistyfikacja?
In: Kwartalnik "Bellona", Band 712, Heft 1, S. 75-86
ISSN: 2719-3853

World War I, Poles and forced displacement: Kharkiv silhouettes ; Pierwsza wojna światowa, Polacy i wymuszone przemieszczenia: sylwetki charkowskie ;
In the proposed article the author made an attempt through the prism of several biographies to show how the World War I and its consequences affected the fate of Poles associated with Kharkiv in various ways. She presented the life scenarios of the three categories of the population that appeared due to this military conflict. Among them are refugee poet Leopold Henryk Staff (1878–1957), civilian prisoner of war – artist Marian Antoni Ruzamski (1889–1945), emigrant – artist Boleslaw Cybis (1895–1957), who was forced to leave Kharkiv due to the occupation of the city in January 1919 by Bolshevik troops. The conclusion emphasizes that there were three cultural figures to have brought glory to Poland and Kharkiv which in turn became a stage in their lives – forced or of good will. Special attention brought to perpetuating the memory of prominent Poles in calendars "Outstanding Poles and Kharkiv ‒ 2018", "Polish artists and Kharkiv ‒ 2019", which feature silhouettes of Leopold Staff, Boleslaw Cybis, Marian Ruzamski.

The Author examines the presentation of the German occupation at the Warsaw Rising Museum and in Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory in Krakow. Initially, she studies the space of these exhibitions and demonstrates that the Warsaw Rising Museum has some characteristics of reflective space, while the exhibition at the Schindler's Factory is primarily a projective one. Then, she points out that both museums treat artefacts as illustrations of their stories, as a consequence of which they are simulations of the past rather than material testimonies of what had happened. Finally, the Author argues that the Warsaw Rising Museum primarily tells the story of glory of the Polish nation, while the Schindler Factory focuses on the social history. In conclusion the Author points out that none of the exhibitions breaks the existing taboos or offers a new approach to the past. Both museum stories perfectly reflect the shape of the Polish social memory of World War II. Differences in the way they present the past are a result of rooting each of the stories in different public debates that were conducted in Poland after 1989.

Vilnius and the Vilnius Region in the Period of Evacuation of Russian Army and Authorities in 1915 ; Wilno i Wileńszczyzna w okresie ewakuacji wojsk i władz rosyjskich w 1915 r
Initially, the military operations during World War I were advancing at some distance from Vilnius. The offensive of the Central Powers directly threatened the city as late as in the summer of 1915. Atthat moment preparations started to evacuate important offices, economic and financial structures fromVilnius. Also, the people employed in these institutions, especially those of executive level, started togradually leave the city (usually with their families). The intensification of this flight came in late Augustand September. The men of military age were being evacuated as well. A large number of the inhabitantsof the Vilnius region sympathized with the Russians, which was understandable given the fact that theircousins and relatives served in the tsarist army. Some remained neutral. After the outbreak of the war therequisitions made by the Russian army were a serious problem for the population. They were especiallyacute for the farmers. The tactics of "burned land" used by the retreating Russian troops was an evengreater threat to the residents of the Vilnius region and their property. Although the action did not muchaffect Vilnius, it had a serious impact on the rural areas in the region, including those located in thedirect vicinity of the city. On 18 September 1915, the German troops entered Vilnius. The residents ofthe region responded calmly to the change of the situation, there were no cases of panic. The occupiedlands, previously held by Russia, were treated by the Germans as a loot, hence they were exploited tothe maximum extent. It was directly reflected in the quality of life of the civilian population. ; Działania militarne I wojny światowej początkowo toczyły się w pewnym oddaleniu odWilna. Ofensywa państw centralnych bezpośrednio zagroziła miastu dopiero w lecie 1915 r.Rozpoczęto wówczas w Wilnie przygotowania do ewakuacji ważniejszych urzędów, strukturgospodarczych i finansowych. W dniu 18 września1915 r. do Wilna wkroczyły oddziały niemieckie.

Skład, funkcjonowanie i działalność
The Governments of the Kingdom of Poland ( 1917–1918 ). Members and modes of functioningThe process of restoration of the Kingdom of Poland was started by the Act of 5th November 1916, issued by the governments of Germany and Austria-Hungary (after pushing out the Russian army from Polish territory and establishing the Regency Council). The foundations of Polish state administration were laid by the Regency Council through establishing Polish governments with Prime Ministers. The competencies of the government were delineated by the Act of 3rd January 1918 "about the temporary organization of the head authorities in the Kingdom of Poland". The act differentiated the executive power into the Prime Minister, the Council of Ministry and the Ministers themselves. The scope of Prime Minister's duties was defined the Patent of 12th September 1917 and the act of 03th January 1918. Neither of the documents made it clear, however, what authority, and according to what procedure, should appoint the Prime Minister. The new government was approved by the Regency Council only as requested by the already appointed Prime Minister. For sure it highlighted the independency of the "Ministers' President" from the rest of the government, whose work he supervised. During the time of the Regency Council five cabinets were established, including two provisional governments. Evaluating the cabinets, it should be highlighted that the cabinet of Jan Kucharzewski was the one which actively sought practical experience in managing the Council of Ministry, which later was used by their successors. Their other big achievement was preparation of a lot of projects of legal acts necessary for the development of the new Polish State. The cabinet of Jan Steczkowski continued this process, but after establishing the Council of State in June 1918 (whose role was overestimated) it slowed down in its work of overtaking the successive parts of country administration, and instead started establishing diplomatic offices, which turned out nothing but a faint attempt to show the illusory independency of the Kingdom of Poland. The cabinet of Józef Świeżyński struggled to demonstrate the independency of the Polish government in front of the German and Austrian governments, trying even to distance itself from the Regency Council. It is worth emphasizing the intense work of the provisional governments on taking over the state issues by Polish political subjects. Even though the possibilities of the first cabinets were very limited, they did establish the beginnings of Polish regular state administration and in this way educated the regular state administration officers for the future Polish State.

War and mobility. Galicians in the Kingdom of Poland during World War I
The period of World War I was not only a military confrontation of soldiers of fighting countries. It also significantly affected the daily lives of millions of ordinary people. One of the manifestations of this influence was war mobility. It also concerned the inhabitants of Galicia. As a result of warfare's, the Galicians were forced to move in different directions; as soldiers, refugees, evacuated. One of the directions of Galician migration was the Kingdom of Poland, that was conquered in 1915 by the Central Powers. The influx of people from Galicia into this area can be divided into several waves. As the first came the Polish soldiers in Austrian uniforms. The next one was made up of Galician Poles served in the Austrian occupation government. Then came to the Kingdom scholars, officials, and intelligentsia invited by the authorities of the rebuilding Polish state. The Galicians were not always well received by their countrymen from the Congress Poland. One of the reasons was prevailing stereotypes and prejudices. However, the Galician's made a significant contribution to the work of building Polish statehood. Jedną z przyczyn były panujące stereotypy i uprzedzenia. Galicjanie wnieśli jednak istotny wkład w dzieło budowy państwowości polskiej.
