"This paper argues that there existed a specifically French tradition of conceptualizing civil society, developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which differed in important respects from the Anglo-American emphasis on the market sphere. It shows that this tradition, which had its roots in Montesquieu's Esprit des lois, and was exemplified most famously in the writings of Alexis de Tocqueville, argued for the existence of a third, intermediary sphere between the government and the people as indispensable for the preservation of political liberty. At the same time, this paper shows how the French thinkers here discussed feared that the preservation of this intermediate sphere of civil society was threatened by the rise of modern, individualistic society. French defenders of civil society were therefore highly critical of modernity - a critical attitude which seems to have been inherited by some of their contemporary descendants, such as Robert Putnam." Notions of war in the history of political ideas can be divided in 4 fundamental ideas followinga typology which is inherent in the Kantian war-theory: nature, law, culture, politics. The natureconcept is treated in Machiavel where he speaks about the lion- and fox-character of the"nuovo principe" as chief of warfare. The law concept is represented in the "relectiones" ofVitoria, which treats about the mandate of the Spanish crown for warfare in favour of Christianmission in the new indian countries. The concept of culture, or more exactly of liberalcivilization, is given by Benjamin Constant which blames the aggression of Napoleon againstRussia; his thesis is that liberal societies don't need the institution of war. The fourth conceptis a political one. Clausewitz gave the famous definition of war as the "continuation of politicswith alternative means"; other types of political wars, characterized by absolute hostility, arerepresented in the partisan-theory of Carl Schmitt. In sight of the actual global situation theconcept of law is underlined as right and urgent too.

Close transatlantic relations are no longer taken for granted. Paul Nolte examines the causes of this change and, along the way, analyzes the basic structures of Western modernity from the early modern era until today: revolutionary movements, the creation of the market society, and the origins of republicanism and democracy. His analysis adds historical depth to our snapshot images of German-American relations.
