The article first offers an overview of the justice system & the Islamization process it underwent after the 1979 revolution. The article lays out the function of law in negotiating the balance between the republican & authoritarian elements of the state, between the elected & non-elected institutions which the Islamic Republic combines. It shows how law is used to tip that balance between, on the one hand, elected institutions, civil society organizations & the political opposition, & on the other, the Leader's office. This paper reflects on the approximations and tensions between cultural studies and the political economy of communication, taking the work of Stuart Hall as a contact point. From the reflections that the author proposes on the theme of ideology and the relations between economy and culture, we argue that the understanding of social phenomena cannot The understanding of social phenomena cannot dispense with an approach that articulates different fields in order to reach the social totality. In his analyzes of culture, ideology, and identity, Hall uses the concrete perspective of historical materialism without limiting himself to economic determinism, especially through a posture of theoretical renewal that helps to overcome dissent between the two camps.

Humanity has always been tormented with the end of existence. On some occasions, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, this affliction is pronounced. To what extent can fear of death alter individuals' political perceptions and beliefs? It is in this context of uncertainties and fears that we investigate how Brazilian society has been evaluating its leaders, especially concerning the policy of social distancing. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the axes of political polarization. On the one hand, governors, mayors, and legislators are concerned about the risks of a collapse of the health system. On the other, President Jair Bolsonaro focused primarily on the negative economic consequences of the pandemic. Through an opinion poll, we identified that "fear of death" diminished the ideological polarization that has existed in Brazil since Jair Bolsonaro's election. Contrary to what many expected, voters who identified themselves as right-wing and center-right - supposedly, the core of Bolsonaro's voters – refused to follow the president's recommendation of relaxing social distancing policies and considered his performance inappropriate during the pandemic. We also show that different income levels did not influence this change in behavior.

; In the last decades, gender and sexuality have circumscribed an innovative field of increasing intellectual production, becoming at the same time a significant focus of political action for anthropologists in Brazil. In order to put into perspective the disputes that are at stake in the current Brazilian context – in which the knowledge we produce has been severely attacked – we will revisit some documents of public positioning, published by the Gender and Sexuality Committee of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology (ABA) over the last few years. We propose a reflection on the kind of knowledge we have produced about gender and sexuality, how it has impacted the public debate about these issues and how it has affected the ways in which our own scientific practice has been socially perceived and evaluated.
