; This article analyzes the discourse of Jornal Nacional (Globo Channel) about Venezuelans displaced to Brazil as a result of the economic, political and social crisis in Venezuela, in order to explore their narrative senses. We decided to use, as a temporal cut-off, 17 editions of 2018, with an analytical emphasis on those that showed the presence of Venezuelan immigrants in Brazil. With the help of Sociology, we identified the blind nodes in the discursive practices of Jornal Nacional. The arrival of the immigrants is narrated as a threat to normality and stability. The perpetuation of this discursive regime may function as a mechanism of exclusion, generating new fears and insecurities.
"By examining the work of a large number of photographers of immigrant families, the author documents the social uses and artistic dimensions of photography in Brazil from approximately 1890-1930. Supplemented with testimonies of travelers and artists such as Richard Burton and Jean Baptiste Debret, who describe everyday life in 19th-century Brazil. Also uses methods of visual anthropology to achieve a better understanding of historical photography. Includes bibliography and many reproductions"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58
In the months since the national elections, Italy has been in political turmoil. Parliament was dissolved & new coalitions have been formed that bear little resemblance to their predecessors. One major contentious issue has been that of immigration. Romano Prodi contends that the three million immigrants who have entered Italy in recent years, especially since the enlargement of the European Union, have had an "incredible social & psychological impact" on Italy. The situation in Italy is discussed in relation to that in Portugal. Adapted from the source document.
The shift from the continent of emigration to the continent of immigration marks the change of an era for Europe. Since 1945, tens of millions of immigrants have reached Western Europe, at first from other European regions, then from every corner of the world. Thus, a remarkable social transformation took place: the (ultimate) birth of multi-national, multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi-religious societies. For a long time, governments and companies demanded that immigrants be only temporary, so as to have a mass of precarious, barely integrated, vulnerable workers. Such demand, strongly restated over the past few years, was fiercely opposed by immigrant populations, who responded with a wider social rooting. The same applies to the similar demand by the powers that be to impose on immigrants differential exploitation and any sort of discrimination, opposed by a long chain of struggles and upheaval. Over the course of decades, set on the background of the unsolved great crisis of 2008, this conflict has escalated, until the "question of immigration" has turned into a military question, to be fixed with the intervention of the navy and border police. This paper states that the stakes are now too high: either we go back to a model of society and state based on brutal "racial" and class oppression, or we go towards a society finally freed from any kind of oppression.
The stereotype of the Latin woman is commonly associated with sexuality. Brazilians seem to be particularly burdened by this stigma among Latin women worldwide. As immigrants, intersected by other matrices of oppression in addition to those of gender and race, for example, these women bear various marks remaining from Eurocentric coloniality that belittles and silences them (Mignolo, 2000/2003), a circumstance that is aggravated when the country of emigration is their coloniser. This article explores resorting to cyberspace as a forum for denunciation and feminist activism through a case study of the profile @brasileirasnaosecalam based on content analysis. The project appeared on the digital social network Instagram to anonymously report the harassment, discrimination and prejudice that Brazilian immigrant women suffer in Portugal, specifically for carrying their own nationality. Thus, through cyberactivism, which is also feminist activism, women are now experiencing a new cycle of political opportunities driven by the building and consolidation of ties among them around the globe, breaking down binarisms, including those between the first and the third world, in an appeal to cross-border articulation (Timeto, 2019). That shows the relevance of pursuing an ontological vision underpinned by a decolonial and intersectional feminist perspective that uses cyberfeminism as an ally to interconnect the digital and the real space.
