Civil liberties to the majority of the people in this country are of small account, none more so than in the field of colored immigration. In 1972, only, 2,250 work vouchers were issued to the whole of the Commonwealth. The Immigration Act of 1971 is effective to operate retrospectively & treat as "illegal entrants" liable to detection & removal all Commonwealth citizens who entered the UK & are here in breach of the immigration laws in force both before & after the New Act. The word "settled" has a special significance & if it were proved that they enjoyed this status, would normally exempt them from deportation. This immigration system will further perpetuate the vicious system of blackmail by highly-organized racketeers who brought people into the UK in the first place. Under the law a suspected illegal immigrant can be arrested by an immigration officer or a police officer without a warrant; the immigrant has no rights. An impartial body should be set up to take into account compassionate circumstances involved in individual cases of illegal immigration. Police raids in Camden & Tower Hamlets, allegedly under the direct control of the Home Office, suggest that a witch hunt is already under way. It need only be said that those who will suffer in this fashion will be the black community, always identifiable & always vulnerable. L. DeForge.
