Das Kernproblem internationaler Querschnittstudien ist das Problem der Vergleichbarkeit. Hier setzt der Beitrag an. Nachdem einleitend Beispiele für international vergleichende Forschungsprojekte vorgestellt worden sind, behandelt der Beitrag typische Aspekte des Forschungsdesigns bei Querschnittstudien, Fragen der Planung und Organisation der Datengewinnung, den Einfluss unterschiedlicher nationaler Rahmenbedingungen, die Bedeutung kultureller Faktoren, Aspekte der Standardisierung, die Umsetzung des Forschungsdesigns sowie Datenanalyse und Berichterstattung über die Ergebnisse. Die Verfasser betonen abschließend die Notwendigkeit, sich über die idealen Designeigenschaften international vergleichender Untersuchungen klar zu werden, den Einfluss dieser Eigenschaften auf die Forschungsergebnisse zu kennen und Grundlagen eines stabil und vorhersehbar ablaufenden Forschungsprozesses zu schaffen. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Harmonisierung des International Social Survey Programme (ISSP). Er stellt das ISSP mit seinem Harmonisierungskonzept vor, fragt nach der Harmonisierung der Hintergrundvariablen und greift dann exemplarisch eine zentrale Hintergrundvariable und deren Konstruktion heraus. Der Beitrag schließt mit Anmerkungen zur künftigen Entwicklung der Hintergrundvariablen des ISSP. (ICEÜbers)

Die Verfasser stellen Fragen und Ergebnisse zur Einkommensmessung in zwei internationalen Umfrageprojekten vor, dem European Community Household Panel und dem European Social Survey. Vorgelegt werden Ergebnisse für Deutschland, Großbritannien, Italien und Luxemburg. Die Verfasser diskutieren fünf Merkmale, die einen Einfluss auf die Qualität der Antworten haben können: Haushaltsgröße, Stellung des Antwortenden in der Familie, Haupteinkommensquelle, Zusammensetzung des Einkommens, kognitive Fähigkeit des Befragten, sich an das Einkommen zu erinnern. Abschließend wird nach der optimalen Bestimmung der Einkommensklassen für Untersuchungen in verschiedenen Ländern gefragt. (ICE)

The multilingual European Thesaurus on International Relations and Area Studies (European Thesaurus) is a special subject thesaurus for the field of international affairs. It is intended for use in libraries and documentation centres of academic institutions and international organizations. The European Thesaurus was established in a collaborative project involving a number of leading European research institutes on international politics. It integrates the controlled terminologies of several existing thesauri. The European Thesaurus comprises about 8,200 terms and proper names from the 24 subject areas covered by the thesaurus. Because of its multilinguality, the European Thesaurus can not only be used for indexing, retrieval and terminological reference, but serves also as a translation tool for the languages represented. The establishment of cross-concordances to related thesauri extends the range of application of the European Thesaurus even further. They enable the treatment of semantic heterogeneity within subject gateways. The European Thesaurus is available both in a seven-lingual printversion as well as in an eight-lingual online-version. To reflect the changes in terminology the European Thesaurus is regularly being amended and modified. Further languages are going to be included.

Gegenstand des Beitrags ist das europäische Forschungsprojekt "WomEng - Creating Cultures of Success for Women Engineers" (www.womeng.net). Es handelt sich hierbei um ein international vergleichendes Projekt der Berufs- und Geschlechterforschung. Die Verfasserin erörtert Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen, die sich beim Design eines komplexen international vergleichenden Forschungsprojekts ergeben, sowie Aspekte des internationalen Vergleichs geschlechtsspezifischer Faktoren der Ingenieurausbildung. Behandelt werden die Operationalisierung der Forschungsfragen sowie Probleme der eingesetzten quantitativen (Fragebogenkonstruktion, Stichprobe, Validität, Reliabilität) und qualitativen Methoden (Leitlinien für Interviews, Zielgruppeninterviews, Beobachtung und Inhaltsanalyse von Websites; Implementation der Leitlinien; qualitative Datenanalyse). Die auftretenden Probleme werden abschließend auf drei Ebenen diskutiert: (1) Probleme des Vergleichs verschiedener Kulturen; (2) methodologische Probleme; (3) Probleme im Kontext der Geschlechterforschung. This chapter aims to describe and analyse the national systems of quality assurance, accreditation and recognition of qualifications in higher education in European countries. It focuses on the countries participating in the Bologna Process, a European-wide reform effort whose aim is to move national higher education systems towards comparability (ERASMUS, SOCRATES). Furthermore, it provides an overview of the national frameworks for the recognition of qualifications in Europe, including the UNESCO/Council of Europe Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications (Lisbon Recognition Convention). Nationale Bildungssysteme sind höchst unterschiedlich konstruiert. Die Verfasser stellen zunächst die Schulsysteme dreier EU-Staaten vor ( Deutschland, Dänemark, Luxemburg), wobei sowohl allgemein- als auch berufsbildendes Schulwesen berücksichtigt werden. Sie geben dann einen Überblick über vorliegende Instrumente, die in der vergleichenden Bildungsforschung zur Bestimmung des höchsten erreichten Bildungsniveaus angewandt werden (Anzahl der Schuljahre, International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED), CASMIN Educational Classification, Hoffmeyer-Zlotnik Educational Classification) und zeigen, welche Fehlermöglichkeiten sich bei der Verwendung dieser Instrumente eröffnen. Als Alternative wird eine Matrix mit zehn Kategorien entwickelt, die Bildungsabschlüsse des allgemein- und des berufsbildenden Schulwesens umfasst und den internationalen Vergleich des "höchsten erreichten Bildungsabschlusses" erlaubt: die Hoffmeyer-Zlotnik/Warner-Matrix of Education. The effects of the demographic challenge will change the nature of politics and the emphasis of political sectors over the next 20 years, especially on a local level. This calls for new ways of thinking, new social skills and a new frame of awareness to allow for sustainable development. The community of Illingen in the Saarland, a town of 18,000 residents, has not denied the demographic change, but has accepted it. It shows how the populace, politics and administration have been confronted with inconvenient truths in a participation process. The process of strategically aimed, participative development planning allows for flexible responses to new situations – even to new suggestions in governmental arrangements. For the first time we can empirically support the claim that demographic change can be controlled using an integrated development concept.

On the base of delimitations of the subject, the emergence and development of the third sector is discussed, its relevance, impact and potential presented, and recommendations for its further development are made.

This study focuses on the "European city" model and its impact on urban policies, emphasising city centre housing as a central issue. The urban renaissance as it is discussed in literature will also be reconsidered, as this study seizes on these two subject matters and explores their relation looking at Berlin's historic city centre as the study area. The development of Berlin's historic city centre as a housing location since 1990 is analysed showing how in four phases the change of this area from a marginal populated urban frontier to one of Berlin's most favoured and expensive housing locations has developed using the "European City" as a development model.

"Since the development of the Institutional Dimensions of Global Environmental Change (IDGEC) Science Plan in 1998 has become an important subject of inquiry. The Science Plan put institutional interaction on the agenda of global change research when only a handful of scholars had raised the general issue. Their work drew attention to the risk of 'treaty congestion' [...] and to an increasing 'regime density' [...] in the international system. Today it is widely recognized that 'the effectiveness of specific institutions often depends not only on their own features but also on their interactions with other institutions' [...].
