"China's ascendance on the world stage signals a major shift in the global political, economic, and security environment. The ability of the U.S. and EU to deal effectively with the challenges associated with China's rise have far-reaching consequences both for transatlantic relations and for the effective management of China's global emergence and the world order. The Bush administration's China policy appears still contested and the future of Sino-American relations highly uncertain. China has not already become the world's 4th economy and 3rd exporter, but also an increasingly important political power (total external trade now more than three times the combined trade of India and Brazil). In this context, it is not surprising that competition and rivalries within the strategic triangle are growing. While ambivalence has always characterized the complex U.S.-China relations, increasing frictions in a number of political and economic fields is rather a new development within the EU-China relations during the last 12-18 months." In their introduction to the handbook "The educational systems of Europe" which comprises country studies of all European education systems the authors explain the underlying methodological concept. They comment on the purpose and the comparative functions of the book and on the common structure of the country studies. Die Wohlfahrtsregime in den Ländern der EU unterscheiden sich erheblich hinsichtlich der Unterstützung und des politischen Instrumentariums zur Förderung von Familien mit abhängigen Kindern. In Anbetracht der Erfordernisse zur Harmonisierung der verschiedenen nationalstaatlichen Sozialpolitiken - insbesondere nach der Osterweiterung - versucht die vorliegende Studie, einen international vergleichenden Überblick zur Lage einkommensschwacher Familien zu geben. Die Untersuchung stützt sich auf repräsentative Mikrozensusdaten von 1994-1998 aus 15 EU-Staaten, darunter zwei osteuropäische Beitrittsländer. Der ex-post harmonisierte Datensatz der Longitudinalstudie CHER zeigt deutlich, dass die Erfolge bei der Verbesserung der Lebenslage dieser Familien jeweils vom jeweiligen wohlfahrtsstaatlichen Regime (Typologie nach Asping) und dem familienpolitischen Verständnis der jeweiligen Regierung abhängig sind. In view of the different national education systems of modern Europe comparable features of diversity can be observed, as well as a wide range of similarities, e.g. compulsory school attendance, the horizontally structured school system or core subjects. "In the current period education systems are affected by growing influence of global changes, concerning both their internal processes and their positions in the perceptions by the society." The author points out that since this trend is marked by strong dynamism, exact predictions on times to come are very difficult; thus his "predictions at the beginning of the 21st century" are made "on the provison that they need to be revised even in the near future." The author's considerations are focused on the following criteria which mirror trends to be observed in all European education systems: Educational sovereignty; opening of schools; curriculum development; intercultural socialisation and education; teaching profession and teacher education. In an exemplary excursion into the comparative domain Europe as educational space in its own right is compared to the United States, Australia and Canada. Despite the momentous social and economic change of recent decades, patterns of social stratification have proven to be remarkably stable. In this volume, an expert team analyses the current state of social stratification research from a comparative, international perspective. The volume presents theoretical knowledge as well as empirical evidence on questions such as intergenerational social mobility; inequalities of educational opportunity, gender and ethnicity; and the role of education in the labour market. Die Verfasserin schildert den Versuch der südafrikanischen Regierung, die Aktivitäten von Söldnern zu verbieten. Trotz den bestehenden internationalen Normen bieten weiterhin Söldner ihre Dienste an. Es werden zahlreiche Faktoren thematisiert, die förderlich für die Aktivitäten von Söldnern in Afrika sind. Dazu gehören die Armut, die ethnischen Spannungen und die wiederkehrenden Konflikte. Söldner werden von Herrschern und Rebellen für Operationen innerhalb des Kontinents eingesetzt. Südafrika ist der erste Staat gewesen, der entsprechende inländische Gesetze eingeführt hat. Diese verbieten Aktivitäten von Söldnern innerhalb Südafrikas sowie die Tätigkeit südafrikanischer Söldner in der Welt. Trotz dieser Gesetzgebung sind südafrikanische Söldner weiterhin aktiv. Die gut ausgebildeten ehemaligen südafrikanischen Sondereinheiten sind von der ANC-Regierung entlassen worden. Als Konsequenz betrachten viele private militärische Unternehmen Südafrika als 'Pool' von Söldnern, die zur Verfügung stehen. Es wird gezeigt, dass durch die neue inländische Gesetzgebung die südafrikanischen Söldner mit dem Dilemma konfrontiert werden, entweder heimzukommen und eine andere Beschäftigung zu finden oder nach ihrer Rückkehr ins Gefängnis zu gehen. In the wake of globalization, national governments are becoming increasingly interdependent, and knowledge is arguably becoming the most valuable form of capital. Data of 18 surveys based on the random samples representative for adult population of Ukraine (over 18 years old) being conducted by Kiev International Institute of Sociology from 1991 to 2003 by the face-to-face interview method are analyzed. The dynamics of the follow ing five indicators of social exclusion is considered: a) belonging to a household having the income per capita less than half the median income; b) belonging to a household lacking for money to purchase daily food; c) unemployment over a long period of time (one year or more); d) lack of education; more precisely, increase in the number of adults from 18 to 30 years of age who have no completed secondary education; e) no help from associates when an individual seeks it.

The global finance system has been the subject of hot debate for several years. Major players such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have come under fire for their financial practices, while the role of epistemic authorities, including rating agencies, remains unclear. This book systematically analyzes the role knowledge plays in global finance reform by considering its influence in the empirical areas of finance (banking, accounting, and bond rating, for example). As the contributors demonstrate, current institutional management strategies reflect a shift toward “cognitive,” or learning-based modes of managing financial and political risks—and this cognitive thinking has its own consequences for the global marketplace. Die zunehmende gesellschaftliche Bedeutung von Wissen und Wissensmanagement zeigt sich besonders deutlich im globalen Finanzsystem.
