Race, Ethnicity and Class: An Analysis of Interrelations
In: International social science journal: ISSJ, Band 46, S. 83-93
ISSN: 0020-8701
Compares the terms race, ethnicity, & class. While race refers to a biological category, racism refers to the oppression that results when one race is perceived as superior to another. While ethnicity refers to a cultural identity, discrimination still persists when one cultural group is perceived as superior to another. Insisting on the distinctions between race & ethnicity & between ethnicity & nationality, the word pairs racism/racity & ethnicism/ethnicity are suggested as a way to differentiate between the negative & positive dimensions of the two phenomena. Finally, because race & ethnicity refer to organic groups, while classes refer to aggregates of individuals, the fact that members of different races & ethnic groups are statistically more common among particular social classes deserves further investigation. 1 Table, 2 Photographs, 21 References.
