In the last years several Western corporations from the financial sector, including banks, insurance companies, & rating agencies, begun to offer on the market financial products in conformity with the prescriptions of Islamic Shari'a. At the beginning, the targets were only the Arab & the Islamic markets mainly in the Middle East. More recently, this trend also extended to the Western market, targeting both the liquidity of Arab investors & the Muslim populations of Europe & North America with "ethical" products. Thus, the main objective of this paper is discussing, in a broad way, what is at stake with the expansion of the Islamic finance to the Western societies. The analysis will connect this business trend with other general developments, particularly with Islamism (political Islam), & the Western relativism & multiculturalism. The final purpose is to make an assessment of the possible consequences for the democratic & secular societies of the West. Adapted from the source document.

Islamism is not an abstract formula of Islamic faith, or even an excess of Islam. It comes from that context, yet in another level. This article will analyse it as a movement that, like any other social and political movement, has a certain doctrine and look for inspiration in a secular ideology that uses specific forms of political action to be succeeded. However, there is a difference: it is an ideology with religious precepts that become an immediate praxis, i.e., these precepts are reduced to instruments of analysis of social and political conflicts, thus justifying the dynamics political hostile political takeover. Islamism is a political ideology when forges governing formulas, based on the Quran, that demand the establishment of an Islamic state. It remains to determine the influence of religion in this political ideology. Adapted from the source document.

The article first offers an overview of the justice system & the Islamization process it underwent after the 1979 revolution. The article lays out the function of law in negotiating the balance between the republican & authoritarian elements of the state, between the elected & non-elected institutions which the Islamic Republic combines. It shows how law is used to tip that balance between, on the one hand, elected institutions, civil society organizations & the political opposition, & on the other, the Leader's office. 2014 was a year of paradoxes in Turkey. Internally, Recep Tayyip Erdogan's power was reinforced by winning the two elections, local and presidential, with comfortable margins in spite of the antigovernment protests and the corruption scandals involving the government. This was a scenario feared by many who see Erdogan an increasingly authoritarian leader. Externally, Ankara had to face the escalation of the conflicts in Syria and Iraq, and the rise of the Islamic State, in a period in which Turkey seems to lack a coherent foreign policy strategy. Radical pan-Islamism is a serious threat to universal secularism, the central norm of international order since the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. International secularism rests on two principles: firstly, the organization of religion within states is subject to their sovereignty & not to supranational or transnational revolutionary movements, & secondly, religion must not determine the foreign policies & the alliances of the state. The resurgence of pan-Islamic radicalism since September 11, 2001 as a central issue in world politics challenges both principles. Adapted from the source document.
