Islamic political parties and election campaigns in Indonesia
In: Party politics: an international journal for the study of political parties and political organizations, Band 29, Heft 4, S. 622-635

Islamist political parties are a structural feature of politics across the Muslim world, raising persisting questions for scholars of democracy. Under what conditions will Islamists moderate to support democracy and pluralism? Under what conditions will they adopt more exclusive behavior? Taking a fresh approach, we focus on electoral competition and the conditions under which Islamic party candidates campaign using either inclusive nationalist appeals or exclusively Islamic appeals. Using a unique data source, we coded the appeals contained on the campaign posters of 572 Islamic party candidates in Indonesia. We found that demographics, urban–rural differences, and the level of government office (i.e., national or regional) affected the inclusive or exclusive nature of campaigns. We also highlight differences in appeals made by candidates from Muslim democratic and Islamist parties. The study illustrates the effectiveness of posters as a data source and presents a new approach to understanding the behavior of Islamic parties.

Performance of Islamic Political Parties in Indonesian Contemporary Political Practices
The role of Islamic political party plays vital role in the development and stabilization of system of democracy in the world today (Woischnik & Müller, 2013, p. 59). The fact that almost all parties, especially Islamic political party has fight for religious aspirations and avoid criticizing controversial religious issues which shows the strength of religious influence in Indonesian contemporary political practices (Tanuwidjaya, 2010, p. 29). In this present study, we investigate whether the Islamic political parties and their political elites in Indonesia today think about their performance to fulfill people's interests. We first examine people's view on the role of Islamic political parties, and therefore explore their elite attitudes. Methodologically, this present study employs mix method, quantitative and qualitative research design. More specifically, this study is a case study. The case study is more appropriate for the analysis of this study. For data collection, the study utilizes the questionnaire, interview, and the documentary analysis. There are three steps of data analysis for qualitative data: reducing data, displaying data and drawing and verification. For quantitative data, the present study applies descriptive statistics to find out mean, standard deviation (SD), and percentage. The research findings indicate that the performance of Islamic political parties in Indonesia contemporary politics is still low and the Islamic political party voters are unsatisfactory on the Islamic political parties and their political elites.

New Trends in Islamic Political Parties in the Arab Spring Countries
The recent developments of Islamic political parties in the Arab spring countries show new orientation and agendas, i.e. reconfirmation of their commitment to democratic values, strengthening civil society, and adopting human rights principles. In the same time, they indicate not to be interested in the old Islamic agendas relating to jihad for Islamic states (dawlah Islāmiyah) and "global Islamic government" under one centralized caliphate (al-khilāfah al-Islāmiyyah). It is the case of Justice and Development Party (Ḥizb al-'Adālah wa'l-Tanmiyah) in Morocco, Freedom and Justice Party (Ḥizb al-Ḥurriyyah wa'l-'Adālah) in Egypt, and Awakening Party (Ḥizb al-Nahḍah) in Tunis. This paper seeks to explore and explain this new fact. Based on literary research and interviews with the leaders of the Justice and Development Party (Ḥizb al-'Adālah wa'l-Tanmiyah) in Morocco, the paper concludes that the new orientation and agendas of Islamic political parties in the Arab spring states are related to democratization in the world, strong waves of Arab spring in many Arab states, and the dynamics of the internal parties.[Perkembangan mutakhir partai-partai politik Islam di sejumlah negara Arab "Musim Semi" menunjukkan adanya perubahan orientasi dan agenda baru, berupa penegasan kembali komitmen mereka terhadap nilai-nilai demokrasi, penguatan masyarakat sipil, dan adopsi prinsip-prinsip hak asasi manusia.

Issues Management of Islamic Political Parties to Election Campaign in 2019
In accordance with Article 29 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, Indonesia recognizes the religion and protects the freedom of the people in carrying out its religious teachings. Indonesia is a plural country because of the diversity of beliefs and the beliefs held by the community. But because of this diversity, Indonesia has a sensitivity especially associated with religious issues. In the last two years, the establishment of the negative issues about Islam has been increasing. Consequently, Islam is cornered in Indonesia. This situation is feared to be able to further exacerbate the potential for votes for the Islamic parties in the 2019 election. Therefore, the concept of issues management of Chase W. Howard model is used in this study to answer how the management of the Islamic party issues is to face the 2019 Election. The research method used is the qualitative descriptive approach in the interpretive paradigm with the design of case study research. The results of the research show that the Islamic party has exceeded all elements on the issues management of Chase model. These elements become the step of the Islamic party against the issues of Islam and exist in the democratic system, especially for the 2019 election without reducing the sense of peace in Indonesia.

Political Islam: The shrinking trend and the future trajectory of Islamic political parties in Indonesia
The trend of religious conservatism in Indonesian public sector is increasing nowadays. But the trend is not followed by the rise of political Islam"s popularity. The Islamic political parties are precisely abandoned by their sympathizers because of some reasons. This paper tries to elaborate the reasons causing the erosion of Islamic parties" political legitimacy. Some fundamental problems such as inability to transform ideology into political platform, internal-factionalism, as well as the crisis of identity will be explained further. The experience from 2009 election can be used to revitalize their power and capacity for the better electability in the next 2014 election. But they seem to be unable to deal with the previous problems making the electability erosion in 2014 more potential and inevitable. Various strategies must be conducted by the parties such as consolidation, revitalizing their political communication strategy, widening political networks across various ideological and religious streams, and others. Without that, their existence would be subordinated by the secular parties to become the second class political players in this biggest Moslem country in the world.

The Paradox Between Political Islam and Islamic Political Parties: The Case of West Sumatera Province
The aim of this paper is to explain the apparent paradox between political Islam and Islamic political parties in Indonesia. On one hand, the support for Islamic political parties is in decline, while, on the other religious intolerance and the implementation of local regulations based on the shari'ah laws have increased in many provinces. This paper argues that political Islam and Islamic political parties are not synonymous. Moreover, the aim of achieving an ideal society according to an Islamist's vision and their religious interpretations does not only by adopt a top-down strategic model through participation in formal politics but also by using bottom-up strategic model by focusing on the societal level. By adopting gradualist approaches, hardliner Islamist ideas disseminate peacefully in Indonesia today. This study will focus on West-Sumatra as a case study, considering West Sumatra is one of the most widely province issued the shari'ah laws in Indonesia. This article will shed light on local and often underestimated dynamics.[Artikel ini menjelaskan paradoks antara Islam politik dan partai politik Islam di Indonesia.

The Failure of Islamic Parties in Indonesia
Islamic Political Parties in Indonesia are facing many huge problems. One of the crucial problem is the compound of the number of the Islamic political parties. This particular problem actually has a simple solusion, which is uniting all Islamic political party in one organization (political party), them shows all the citizen that Islamic political party can act in an Islamic ways. however the solution seems extremely difficult to be implement. Many people—particular;y whom has budget and political interest—more and more tries to build political party.
