One can genuinely ask whether that rupture has not started in the Middle Ages and to what extent many of the elements that characterise the Modernity are already present in that period. In that sense, the article seeks to establish some similarities between Medieval and Modern thinking, particularly the aspects concerning the relationships between the ethical-political thinking of Duns Scotus and some ideas of Hobbes, that, after a detailed study, reveal themselves as heirs of Medieval philosophical thinking. ; Las divisiones canónicas de la Historia de la Filosofía generalmente presentan como drástico el quiebre entre el pensamiento medieval y moderno. Se podría genuinamente preguntar si esta ruptura no comenzó, más bien, en el propio Medioevo y hasta qué punto muchos de los elementos que caracterizan a la Modernidad ya estaban presentes en este período. En esta lína, el artículo busca establecer algunas semejanzas entre el pensamiento medieval y moderno, particularmente en los asceptos que conciernen las relaciones entre el pensamiento ético-político en Duns Escoto y algunas ideas de Hobbes que, luego de un cuidado estudio, se revelan a sí mismas como herederas del pensamiento filosófico medieval.

The article seeks to demonstrate the strong late medieval voluntaristic legacy of Scotus in modern political philosophy, especially in Bodin, Machiavelli, and Hobbes, but also in Locke, Rousseau, and Kant. It examines the Scotist conception of power and its philosophical-theological foundations, as well as some of the topics of his "new" metaphysics and anthropology in order to identify their direct or indirect conse­quences for modern political philosophy. ; Se busca mostrar la fuerte herencia voluntarista tardo-medieval de origen escotista en la filosofía política moderna, sobre todo en Bodino, Maquiavelo y Hobbes, pero también en Locke, Rousseau y Kant. Se examina la concepción escotista del poder y su fundamentación filosófico-teológica, así como algunos tópicos de su "nueva" metafísica y antropología para desglosar sus consecuencias directas o indirectas en la filosofía política moderna.

En algunas de sus obras principales Juan Duns Escoto postula su propuesta metafísico-teológica basada en la distinción entre naturaleza y libertad. Según cómo se defina naturaleza –en sentido amplio o en sentido estricto–, será la relación que le quepa con la libertad, y hasta incluso pueden ser tomadas como pasiones disyuntas del ser y del obrar. En efecto, dado que para Duns Escoto es posible entender la naturaleza como principio activo del ser que le lleva a obrar hacia lo uno [ad unum], la voluntad es entendida en cambio como un principio activo libre capaz de obrar hacia los opuestos [ad opposita], dicho de otra manera, capaz de obrar de modo contingente. The purpose of the article is to account for some key notions and elements of Johann Baptist Metz's "Christian Theology after Auschwitz". The Christological proposal of the German Theologian is based on the impact of the Shoah (the Holocaust) upon himself and has as purpose a reflection on the necessity for a social and political mysticism. Thus, Metz aims for recovering the memory of the history of suffering, of which Auschwitz is paradigmatic. Recovering the memory of the defeated might make Christian Theology aware of the dramatic reality of History and might help to prepare it to face better the new challenges. ; El artículo pretende dar cuenta de algunos elementos centrales de la "teología cristiana después de Auschwitz" del teólogo alemán Johann Baptist Metz. Por medio de la consideración del impacto que la Shoá provocó en el autor, de su propuesta cristológica realizada a la luz del acontecimiento del holocausto y de la reflexión sobre la necesidad de una mística social y política, Metz pretende rescatar la memoria de la historia del sufrimiento de la cual Auschwitz es el paradigma. La recuperación del recuerdo de los vencidos permitirá que la teología cristiana se sensibilice frente a la realidad dramática de la historia y pueda responder de mejor manera a los nuevos desafíos que se le imponen. ; O artigo pretende apresentar alguns elementos centrais da "teologia cristã depois de Auschwitz", do teólogo alemão Johann Baptist Metz. A recuperação das recordações dos vencidos permitirá que a teologia cristã se sensibilize frente à realidade dramática da história e possa responder, de melhor maneira, aos novos desafios que se lhe impõem.

In this paper we intend to present some medieval foundations, especially Franciscan, of the revitalized civic republicanism of the 20th century. There is an unjustified leap from Rome to the Renaissance that has its origin in the forgetfulness and simplistic view that Hanna Arendt has of medieval thought and Aristotelianism, caused by the historiographic criteria of her time. For this we will show some characteristics of the thought of this new republicanism in order to present the central ideas of four Franciscan authors: Francesc Eiximenis, Bonaventure, Duns Scotus and Alfonso de Castro. First we will try to show the continuity that exists between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age. With this historical approach we intend to analyze that the legitimate aspiration of this new republicanism is distorted and limited if it leaves aside medieval contributions that help to understand more fully the republican pretension the republican pretension that, without rejecting the autonomy of the individual or the sense of community, highlights the interactive nature of social life and instigates him to persevere in the pursuit of the common good.

The Rhapsodieen by Johann Christian Reil (1759-1813), edited in 1803, gave a crucial boost to care and treatment reforms for the mentally ill in Prussia. Reil, professor at the University of Halle, maintained that the causes of human illnesses cannot be distinguished as purely mental, chemical of physical, but as the result of an essential interaction among these three domains. Also, he formulated the basis of a new specialty, which he called psychiatry; he proposed the rights of people with mental illness, denounced the effects of the social stigma affecting them, defended the creation of specialized institutions which are adequate for them, stressed the responsibility of the government and the whole society for the citizens afflicted with these disorders, and proposed psychic cure as a fundamental treatment, both for mental and somatic illnesses, at a level equivalent to pharmacological treatments and surgery. ; Las Rhapsodieen… de Johann Christian Reil (1759-1813), editadas en 1803, dieron un impulso decisivo para las reformas de la atención y el tratamiento de los enfermos mentales en Prusia. Reil, profesor en la Universidad de Halle, sostenía que las causas de las enfermedades humanas no se pueden distinguir entre puramente mentales, químicas o físicas, sino que resultan de una esencial interacción entre estos tres dominios. Además, formuló las bases de una nueva especialidad, a la que denominó psiquiatría, planteó los derechos de los enfermos mentales, denunció los efectos del estigma social que los afecta, defendió la creación de instituciones especializadas adecuadas para ellos, enfatizó la responsabilidad del gobierno y la sociedad toda ante los ciudadanos aquejados de esos trastornos y propuso a la cura psíquica como un tratamiento esencial, tanto para las enfermedades mentales como para las somáticas, en un plano equivalente a los tratamientos farmacológicos y a la cirugía.
