Carbon moves through the atmosphere, through the oceans, onto land, and into ecosystems. This cycling has a large effect on climate – changing geographic patterns of rainfall and the frequency of extreme weather – and is altered as the use of fossil fuels adds carbon to the cycle. The dynamics of this global carbon cycling are largely predicted over broad spatial scales and long periods of time by Earth system models. This book addresses the crucial question of how to assess, evaluate, and estimate the potential impact of the additional carbon to the land carbon cycle. The contributors describe a set of new approaches to land carbon cycle modeling for better exploring ecological questions regarding changes in carbon cycling; employing data assimilation techniques for model improvement; and doing real- or near-time ecological forecasting for decision support. Co-designing Infrastructures tells the story of a research programme designed to bring the power of engineering and technology into the hands of grassroots community groups, to create bottom-up solutions to global crises. Four projects in London are described in detail, exemplifying community collaboration with engineers, designers and scientists to enact urban change. The projects co-designed solutions to air pollution, housing, the water-energy-food nexus, and water management. Rich case-study accounts are underpinned by theories of participation, environmental politics and socio-technical systems. Les hommes du Moyen Âge, pour racheter leurs péchés, multipliaient les dons aux monastères qui accumulèrent d'importants patrimoines. Le livre oppose deux monastères vénitiens, l'un rural situé sur la frontière lagunaire, La Trinité de Brondolo, l'autre, urbain, placé au cœur du pouvoir politique, San Giorgio Maggiore. San Giorgio a multiplié les donations, La Trinité a entrepris une audacieuse politique de mise en valeur de la Lagune et pour obtenir le produit des dîmes, s'opposa à la noblesse campagnarde et à la paysannerie. Sous le poids des procès, le monastère s'endetta et le pape en confia la gestion aux Cisterciens, jusqu'à sa destruction en 1380. Le monastère de San Giorgio subit aussi la crise au XIVe siècle, le mouvement de réforme rassembla les monastères bénédictins dans des congrégations, sous le patronage de l'abbaye de saint Benoit et sous l'autorité du pape. La Congrégation instituait la solidarité financière entre ses membres sollicités de contribuer aux finances pontificales et aux guerres contre les Turcs. Le monastère a alors recouru aux instruments de crédit mis au point dans une république marchande. Ayant appelé les plus grands architectes, Palladio et Longhena, pour reconstruire ses bâtiments et les embellir, à la chute de la République il disposait d'un patrimoine immobilier considérable

Im Gegensatz zu Adorno hat Habermas kein Interesse mehr daran, sich mit der Metaphysik im Augenblick ihres Sturzes solidarisch zu erklären. Daher behauptet er explizit, ohne »metaphysische Rückendeckung« zu philosophieren und macht dies auch theoriestrategisch deutlich. Die Studie untersucht zunächst die Strategie der Metaphysikkritik bei Habermas, um anschließend die Folgen dieses Vorgehens zu analysieren. Dabei kommt sie zu dem Schluss, dass Habermas eine Naturalisierungsstrategie einschlägt, deren Folgen auf die Konzeption der Diskursethik bisher nicht berücksichtigt worden sind. Dies hat zur Konsequenz, dass Habermas wichtige Aspekte seiner eigenen Ethik unterminiert und damit gerade jener Form von Naturalismus Vorschub leistet, die er eigentlich kritisieren wollte

New insights on the reception of Etruscan antiquity in the modernist period. "L'Étrurie est à la mode", French archaeologist Salomon Reinach bluntly stated in 1927. Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, Etruria had not only been attracting the attention of archaeologists and specialists of all sorts, but it had also been a fascinating and, in some cases, captivating destination for poets, novelists, painters and sculptors from all over Europe. This volume deals with the impact of the constantly expanding knowledge on the Etruscans and their mysterious civilisation on Italian, French, English, and German literature, arts and culture, with particular regard to the modernist period (1890–1950). The volume brings a distinctive point of view to the subject by approaching it from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective, and by looking at a quite diverse range of topics and artefacts, which includes, but is not limited to, the study of drawings, art works, travel essays, novels, cooking recipes, schoolbooks, photographs, and movies. Engaged Urban Pedagogy presents a participatory approach to teaching built environment subjects by exploring 12 examples of real-world engagement in urban planning involving people within and beyond the university. Starting with curriculum review, course content is analysed in light of urban pasts, race, queer identity, lived experiences and concerns of urban professionals. Case studies then shift to focus on techniques for participatory critical pedagogy, including expanding the 'classroom' with links to live place-making processes, connections made through digital co-design exercises and student-led podcasting assignments. Finally, the book turns to activities beyond formal university teaching, such as where school-age children learn about their own participation in urban processes alongside university students and researchers. The last cases show how academics have enabled co-production in local urban developments, trained community co-researchers and acted as part of a city-to-city learning network. Throughout the book, editorial commentary highlights how these activities are a critical source of support for higher education. Together, the 12 examples demonstrate the power and range of an engaged urban pedagogy. They are written by academics, university students and those working in urban planning and place-making. This volume is based on the section "Transnationalities - Transidentities - Hybridities - Diasporization", organized by the Ibero-American and Francophone Research Centres of the University of Leipzig as part of the First Annual Conference of the Centre for Area Studies at the University of Leipzig. By now, already a decade has passed since our conference section took place and it is due to various circumstances that this volume has not been published earlier. It carries along, in some sense, its own migration trace. Nevertheless, the questions examined in the contributions have reached even more relevance since then in both, the Old World and the New, due to the various political, social, economic and ecological crisis around the globe that have led to the increased arrival of refugees to Europe and the harsh discussion about a concrete or "intelligent" wall to shield the USA from Latin American migrants, among others. Today, there is an urgent political and social need for concepts of living together in much more heterogeneous and much less familiar societies. The questions, notions and cases explored in the nine contributions that comprise this publication focus on this emergency.

This book explores three key issues to understand the redefinition of relations between the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC): the international context, foreign policies of EU member states towards Latin America, and crucial topics on the EU-LAC agenda. At the theoretical level, the book aims to rebalance two debates on EU-LAC relations. First, in the debate between agency and structure, the book stresses that context is a limiting factor of the agent's preferences and actions. Second, in the debate between values and interests, it finds that interests should not be made invariably dependent on values. At the empirical level, two aspects stand out. First, the change and continuity in EU member states' foreign policies also impact the EU's own role in the continent. Second, new topics on the bi-regional and global agenda have the potential to redefine the relations between the two regions. At a time of European alleged decline, this volume argues that the EU remains a highly significant actor in Latin America and the Caribbean.
