Many cities in the Global South are structurally different from the Northern, particularly American, cities on which much of urban sociology's conceptual apparatus has been based. Thus, depicting them in terms of a standard urban vocabulary risks imposing an inappropriate way of seeing. We need a vocabulary that is able to accommodate their different urban experience. This special issue contributes to the work of building that vocabulary. We select five keywords in urban sociology— eviction, segregation, suburbs, violence, and gentrification—and reconstruct them in light of the places we study (India, China, Mexico, the Philippines, and South Africa). Our aim is to produce a set of keywords better equipped to travel South and, in the process, advance a truly global urban sociology.

This article calls for greater attention to global cities in the study of world affairs so as to promote a more holistic reading of global governance as a multiscalar set of processes composed by overlapping spheres of authority. The article shows how international studies have been insufficiently sensitive to the strategic role of global cities and how they are capable of acting on the global stage by exerting network power. This sheds light on the multilayered governmentality of global governance from an urban perspective. Looking through a lens of global cities, it is argued, will enable theorists to connect macro processes to micro dynamics across a far wider spectrum of governance and political agencies.

Despite lingering ambiguity surrounding the concept, global civil society is acclaimed by those who think they belong to it, and validated by international governmental organizations seeking legitimation for their activities. Its enthusiasts believe global civil society presages a more congenial kind of politics that transcends the system of sovereign states. Its critics deride its unrepresentativeness and complicity in established power relations. The critics can be answered by more subtle accounts of representation and by highlighting contestatory practices. Appreciation of the promise and perils of global civil society requires moving beyond preconceptions rooted in dated ideas about civil society and democracy as they allegedly function within states. Irrespective of the sophistication of such post-Westphalian moves, global civil society remains contested terrain, involving interconnected political and intellectual disputes. International relations theory proves less useful than it should be in clarifying what is at stake. Democratic theory can be brought to bear, and this encounter sheds new light on what democracy itself can entail.

The conceptual model on the Global Food System (GFS) formulated by Clotet and others (2013), is articulated around four axes: Availability, Economy, Politics and Knowledge (knowledge, social behavior and culture). In this model, each of these axes has the same significance or weighting and for the quantitative study of results, concepts and methods of Compositional Data Analysis are applied (Jarauta-Bragulat et al., 2018). The purpose of this paper is to study and characterize the social perception in Catalonia of the relative importance (weighting) of each of the four axes of the aforementioned model. The study is carried out through the statistical analysis of the results of a survey completed by people who make up a random sample within the territory of Catalonia. The results of this survey are intended to analyze whether the equal balancing of the model axis is adequate or, on the contrary, the weights should be modified in that territory and, in this way, apply a more refined and representative weighting of reality. Several aspects are exposed and commented on: the design of the questionnaire, the data collection, the application of statistical sampling techniques (stratification by quotas and weighting of the strata), polish debugging techniques, as well as profiling techniques to differentiate groups between the variables of the food system and the sociodemographic characteristics that determine them. Based on the results, conclusions are stated. Main conclusions are: adequacy of the theoretical framework of the global food system to articulate the study (Colomer and Jarauta-Bragulat, 2016); adequacy of cluster analysis as a tool and obtaining four differentiated groups; obtaining a relative weight on the axes of the food system model; valuing availability and economy above the other two axes and, lastly, the need for greater food training for citizens for the collective benefit and for each of its members. ; El modelo conceptual sobre el Sistema Alimentario Global (SAG) formulado por Clotet y otros ...

Purpose
This paper examines how firms respond to local government's environment initiatives through textual analysis of government work reports (GWRs). This study aims to provide insights into how firms strategically respond to government's environmental initiatives through their disclosure and investment practices.


Design/methodology/approach
This study uses a textual analysis of GWRs from China's provinces. The frequency and change rate of environmental keywords in these reports are used as a measure of the government's environmental initiatives.


Findings
This study finds that environmental disclosure scores in environmental, social and governance (ESG) reports increase with the frequency or change rate of environmental keywords in provincial GWRs. This effect is more pronounced for non-state-owned enterprises, firms in highly marketized provinces or those listed in a single capital market. However, there is no significant relationship between firms' environmental investments and government initiatives, except for cross-listed firms in provinces with consistently high frequency of environmental keywords in their GWRs.


Practical implications
The findings indicate that government environmental initiatives can shape firms' disclosure behaviors, yet have limited influence on investment decisions, suggesting that environmental disclosure could potentially be opportunistic. This underscores the need for more effective strategies to stimulate firms' environmental investments.


Originality/value
This study provides valuable insights into the differential impacts of government environmental initiatives on firms' disclosure and investment behaviors, contributing to the understanding of corporate environmental responsibility in the context of government initiatives.

The paper explores the metaphors of Global South and North. Looking at earlier terms such as the first, second and third world and identifying the changes coming with the shift of gravity in World Christianity and those after the year 1989 as important moments to start speaking of global Christianity, Global North and South, it is not the geography of places but the interrelations "" economic, political, cultural, religious - of the various contexts which determine a meaningful usage of these terms. Since the Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998, the International Monetary Fund (the Fund) has been embroiled in an international crisis of legitimacy. Assertions of a crisis are premised on the notions that the Fund's voting system is unfair, that the Fund enforces homogeneous policies onto borrowing member states and that loan programmes tend to fail. Seen this way, poor institutional and policy design has led to a loss of legitimacy. But institutionalised inequalities or policy failure is not in itself sufficient to constitute an international crisis of legitimacy. This article provides a conceptually-driven discussion of the sources of the Fund's international crisis of legitimacy by investigating how its formal 'foreground' institutional relations with its member states have become strained, and how informal 'background' political and economic relationships are expanding in a way that the Fund will find difficult to re-legitimate. The difference between the Fund's claims to legitimacy and how its member states, especially borrowers, act has led to the creation of a 'legitimacy gap' that is difficult to close. However, identifying the sources of the Fund's international crisis of legitimacy allows us to explore what avenues are available to resolve the crisis.
