; This thesis analyzes Alfred Kubins novel Die andere Seite (1909) which tells the rise and fall of an alternative world to the incipient modernity. Those who are dissatisfied with modernity and progress find shelter in a pre-modern state which is realized in utopian manner and named "Traumreich". This alternative, which implements the regressive wish to return to a more positively imagined past, should offer a way out of the crises of modernity. It soon turns out that this utopia is a dystopia, and its combination with an apocalypse does not seem to appear by chance since such ideas are closely related to historically critical situations. Hence, the first section of this thesis studies the historical contexts and provides an introduction to the topics of utopia, dystopia, and apocalypse. The following chapter analyzes the Traumreich by employing Foucaults concepts of heterotopias and governmentality and classifies it as a specific form of heterotopia. Subsequently, an analysis of governmentality is conducted which is expected to unearth the prevailing form of government in the Traumreich. It is found that in the Traumreich not only time is being tried to stop in order to exclude all developments and findings made by science and technology, but that there exists an overall concentration on collecting the excluded and the anomalous. An analysis of the form of government revealed its panoptical functional model. People living in the Traumreich have internalized those power relations such that they are incapable of developing effective strategies of counteraction. It is revealed that the alternative world cannot redeem the utopian dream of a better life, as the deficiencies of modernity and the experience of crises cannot be encountered by returning to the pre-modern era.
