Die traditionelle Geographie des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts hat die Welt als naturräumlich und kulturräumlich gekammert gefasst und sah die Aufgabe des Faches in erster Linie darin, diese Räume zu identifizieren und zu beschreiben. Identitäten und Räume wurden dabei als "gegeben" konzeptualisiert. Seit den 1960er Jahren hat sich jedoch die Sozial- und Kulturgeographie im Rahmen einer intensiven sozialtheoretisch informierten Debatte von dieser Vorstellung verabschiedet: Neuere Ansätze konzeptualisieren Räume (und Identitäten) als gesellschaftlich konstruiert. In diskurs- und hegemonietheoretisch informierten Arbeiten wird der Zusammenhang zwischen Raum und Gesellschaft insofern radikalisiert, als diese Ansätze gesellschaftliche Makrostrukturen und Subjekte als immer widersprüchlich, instabil und brüchig konzeptualisieren. Räume können damit nicht einfach als Konsequenz feststehender sozialer Strukturen oder der gegebenen Intentionalität von Subjekten gedacht werden. Vielmehr wird hervorgehoben, dass Soziales instabil und kontingent ist und immer wieder neu konstituiert wird. Die Konstitution von Räumen wird dabei als ein Teil der Konstitution des Sozialen gedacht. Als Element der Herstellung des Sozialen ist die (Re-)Produktion von Räumen immer kontingent, veränderbar, umstritten und in diesem Sinne politisch. Die Versuche der Durchsetzung, Naturalisierung und Fixierung gerade bestimmter Räume sind in dieser Perspektive hegemoniale Akte. Der Beitrag arbeitet die Relevanz dieser Perspektive für Fragestellungen der Sozial- und Kulturgeographie heraus und diskutiert Wege einer angemessenen empirischen Operationalisierung.

Kreativ-künstlerische Methoden schaffen Räume für Formen des Wissens, (Ver-)Lernens, Erinnerns und Handelns, die dominante und verräumlichte Machtverhältnisse hinterfragen. Kunst ist dabei nicht nur ein methodisches Werkzeug und Forschung kein bloßes Kunstprojekt: Stattdessen bringt die Schnittstelle dazwischen multiskalare Fragen und Antworten auf aktuelle gesellschaftliche Prozesse hervor, die sich im Begriff artographies treffen. Die Beitragenden schreiben u.a. zu Sounds, Zines, Figurentheater, Skulptur, Film, Malen sowie Pantomime – und zeigen so neben den Möglichkeiten und Grenzen kreativ-künstlerischer Praktiken auch deren Beitrag zu einer machtkritischen und raumbezogenen Forschung und Lehre auf.

Kolonialismus ist ein historisches Thema, ein Gegenwartsthema und ein geographisches Thema. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes verbinden diese drei Perspektiven und zeigen die Relevanz räumlicher und sozialer Machtverhältnisse des Kolonialismus in der Gegenwart auf. Diese »Kolonialität« genannte Kontinuität zeigt sich in der Wissensproduktion, in öffentlichen Debatten, in der Gestalt europäischer Städte, in lokalen Kämpfen sowie internationalen Politikfeldern. Neben Beiträgen aus der Geographie und Stadtforschung, kommen auch Forschungsansätze der Black Studies, Postcolonial Studies und Decolonial Studies zu Wort

Post-Growth Geographies examines spatial relations of diverse and alternative economies between growth-oriented institutions and multiple socio-ecological crises. The book brings together conceptual and empirical contributions from geography and its neighboring disciplines and offers different perspectives on the possibilities, demands, and critiques of post-growth transformation. Through case studies and interviews, the contributions combine voices from activism, civil society, planning, and politics with current theoretical debates on socio-ecological transformation

Whether driven by developments in plant science, bio-philosophy, or broader societal dynamics, plants have to respond to a litany of environmental, social, and economic challenges. This collection explores the `work' that plants do in contemporary capitalism, examining how vegetal life is enrolled in processes of value creation, social reproduction, and capital accumulation. Bringing together insights from geography, anthropology, and the environmental humanities, the contributors contend that attention to the diverse capacities and agencies of plants can both enrich understandings of capitalist economies, and also catalyze new forms of resistance to their logics.
