Using data from an online survey of 211 heterosexual and 148 sexual and gender minority-identifying cyclists, this article examines the attitudes of both sexual and gender majorities towards sexual and gender minorities as well as the experiences of sexual and gender minorities in relation to each other, within the sport of cycling. The results show a culture of acceptance for LGB athletes with heightened antipathy towards transgender cyclists. However, this variance is not as large as might be expected given the media attention on transgender athletes in cycling, and sport more broadly. It therefore appears that the transgender social movement is drafting closely behind LGB inclusion within this sport.

This commentary on The Fewer The Merrier (TFTM) adopts a lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) lens. Although LGB people commonly construct successful consensual nonmonogamous (CNM) relationships, the focus on opposite‐sex relationships obscured some aspects of U.S. society that are actively resisting the stigmatization of CNM relationships. I call attention to the historic ways that "adultery" has been legally defined in gendered terms, and argue for an analysis of social stigma that engages substantively with qualitative research about how CNM is lived among people of diverse sexualities.

Although research has revealed that more progressive LGB (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) rights are positively associated with more favorable attitudes toward sexual minorities, little is known about why LGB rights co-occur with positive attitudes. The present contribution fills this gap by testing whether the prevalence of intergroup contact with LGB individuals explains the relationship between more progressive LGB rights and sexual prejudice. Utilizing representative Eurobarometer data from 28 European Union Member States, we find that progressive institutional arrangements positively predict favorable attitudes toward sexual minorities by rendering intergroup contact with LGB individuals more commonplace. Importantly, this pattern of findings replicates for different measures of prejudice and LGB-related legislation. The theoretical and practical implications of the current findings are discussed.

Researchers interested in sexual minority health are beginning to examine contextual and environmental determinants of health such as neighbourhoods, health services, and social policies. Efforts to catalogue and systematise policies relating to the health of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals are therefore central in uncovering more comprehensive determinants of LGB health. This commentary identifies the links between social policy and LGB health, some methodological concerns of spatial analyses in this research area, and some future research directions. In particular, there is a need to integrate both migration and life course into understandings of the relationships between LGB health and jurisdictional policies.

This paper reports a qualitative, hermeneutically informed, analysis of three clinical psychology textbooks published in North America and used in postgraduate psychology programmes in California universities. These texts are viewed as cultural products reflecting the intersection between homosexuality and psychology in Western culture. The impact on the reader/clinician of explicit, implicit, and excluded material about lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people is considered. We conclude that, mainly by excluding LGB content, but also by occasionally presenting problematic constructions of LGB people, these textbooks express a contradiction: professional psychology in the US espouses pro-LGB ethics and advocacy, yet it co-operates with anti-LGB cultural, economic, and political forces. Possible reasons for this are considered. Educators and students are urged to take a leading role in confronting the heterosexism of textbooks, through teaching and learning how to question cultural bias.

ObjectiveTo understand which aspects of residential communities are most salient for determining whether sexual minority parents classify their residential community climates as tolerant versus supportive.BackgroundMetropolitan hubs for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) parents are well established, but less is known about nonmetropolitan community climates for LGB parents. Residential community climate toward nonmetropolitan LGB persons may be particularly important to LGB parents because of the potential influences on child and family well‐being.MethodOpen‐ and closed‐ended survey data from a sample of 55 LGB parents were collected along with publically available data regarding their residential communities. Self‐reported residential community climate (tolerant vs. supportive) and community involvement, as well as objective county and municipal climate were analyzed.ResultsCompared with LGB parents who perceived their communities to be tolerant (n = 38), parents who considered their residential communities to be supportive (n = 17) were more likely to live in counties characterized by legal support and broad social acceptance, were personally more likely to participate in LGB‐focused social and political activities, had children with more exposure to other LGB families, and attended church less frequently.ConclusionHaving basic features of equity such as city ordinances and LGB organizations provides a foundation for tolerance in a community; however, individuals in a community must access personal and social supports and activities beyond work and church to feel truly supported.ImplicationsLGB parents' perceptions of climate reveal specific community features that need to be strengthened to promote family well‐being.
