The Intelligence & Security Committee of Parliament has published a number of reports suggesting that, even in 2018, the UK's agencies were still behind Whitehall. Historically, there have been issues with female, BAME and LGBT representation, with the article placing today's criticism of the agencies in historical context with a particular focus on the period after 1945. The article also examines the position now and the steps taken by the agencies to promote change, suggesting there are grounds for cautious optimism.

Kohnen argues that queer media visibility has become a narrowly defined category that upholds normative ideas about sexuality, race, and the American nation. These six former LGBT+ candidates' life stories narrate how these people mobilize from the individual to the collective to participate democratically in their country. From a feminist and decolonial theoretical framework and through four categories —experiences, articulations, representations, and identity politics—, it is concluded that diverse sex-gender people are not mobilized only by their LGBT+ identity, but by the sum of identities and life experiences that make them up. Moreover, by wanting to prevent others from going through the same adverse experiences they underwent at some point in their lives. ; A través de las historias de vida de seis ex candidatos y ex candidatas LGBT+ se narra cómo estas personas se movilizan desde lo individual hasta lo colectivo con el fin de participar democráticamente en el país. Desde las historias de vida, un marco teórico feminista y decolonial y a través de cuatro categorías —experiencias, articulaciones, representaciones y políticas identitarias— se concluye que las personas sexo-género diversas no se movilizan únicamente por su identidad LGBT+, sino por la sumatoria de identidades y experiencias de vida que las conforman, con el objetivo de evitar que otros y otras pasen por las mismas experiencias adversas que vivenciaron en algunos momentos de su vida.

"Does democracy require an agreement on specific foundational values? Bringing insights from Turkey to the study of democratization, this book argues that democracy may rather be about acknowledging the disagreement over values before negotiating over other concerns, such as rights, freedoms, capabilities and duties. It explores this idea by examining three landscapes of culture in Turkey, which have been the subjects of persistent stories regarding the unequal relationship between the self and the other. The Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament (ISC) has published a number of reports suggesting that even in 2018 the UK's agencies – MI5, SIS and GCHQ – were still behind Whitehall generally, particularly in senior leadership. Historically, there have been issues with female, BAME and LGBT representation at all levels, with the article placing today's criticism of the agencies in historical context with a particular focus on the period after 1945. The article also examines the position now and the steps taken by the agencies to promote change. Even if past reviews have provoked criticism, this article argues there are grounds for cautious optimism in efforts to make Britain's intelligence agencies more representative of society.

AbstractAlthough populist leaders often employ an anti-elite discourse which presents the elite as unable or unwilling to represent ordinary citizens, we know very little about who elites actually think should be represented, or how this differs, if at, all from what ordinary citizens want. In this article we find that there is a considerable difference between the groups that voters want to see represented in parliament and those which political elites want to see represented. In particular, we find that political elites tend to hold far more 'cosmopolitan' preferences than ordinary voters, and prioritize the representation of greater diversity in parliament based on the groups politicised by the new social movements and identity politics of the 60s and 70s, such as women, ethnic minorities, LGBT and the disabled. By contrast, voters more often hold nativist preferences than political elites and more often prioritize the representation of groups such as the working class, and white local people. Moreover, British voters who hold nativist preferences of political representation are more likely to be politically alienated and more likely to support Brexit.

Abstract
The notion of 'gay' has been interpreted by popular culture in Portugal to stem from a liberalization of individual practices and beliefs in the realm of sexual culture in general. As such, sexual orientation is commonly conflated with a cultural trend linked to modernity, in opposition to recognizing it as a constitutive element of sexual citizenship and the related set of rights it entails. This often unnoticed conflation obliterates significant socio-historical changes and the role played by an array of institutions and agents that contributed to those changes. In this article, the political and social history of homosexuality throughout the twentieth century will be the departure point to examine issues of impact and change in relation to the cultural representation of lesbians and gay men in the public sphere. Media reports of LGBT events throughout the 1990s and early 2000s will be considered a key indicator of cultural representation of sexual diversity. From criminalization to same-sex marriage, the article critically interrogates the extent to which formal change has translated into more inclusive notions of sexual justice regardless of sexual orientation.

This book explores representations of intersex - intersex persons, intersex communities, and intersex as a cultural concept and knowledge category - in contemporary North American literature and popular culture. The study turns its attention to the significant paradigm shift in the narratives on intersex that occurred within early 1990s intersex activism in response to biopolitical regulations of intersex bodies. Focusing on the emergence of recent autobiographical stories and cultural productions like novels and TV series centering around intersex, Viola Amato provides a first systematic analysis of an activism-triggered resignification of intersex.

"Women's rights" and "gender equality" are not straightforward or neutral terms. Competing political projects define them in different ways. The articles in this Special Section show how the struggle to define gender equality and women's rights has played out in different moments and in different types of media during the past hundred years in Turkey. The articles cover a range of historical and contemporary issues about women's rights and gender equality. This Special Section contributes to our understanding of institutional structures, actors and relationships, and media texts that shape the landscape of women's rights and gender equality in Turkey. In this introduction, I present the contributions and provide a summary of debates on gender and media in Turkey today.
