The United States marriage rights movement just culminated in July 2015 with the Supreme Court declaring same-sex marriage constitutional. The mainstream — the mainstream media and the mainstream LGBT rights movement — all applaud this trajectory, with no attention to those who get left behind in marriage politics. In this paper, I will argue that same-sex marriage is in need of a materialist feminist analysis. I will critique my discipline — Sociology — for failing to adequately theorize same-sex marriage as a key component of the 21st Century landscape of the capitalist mode of production. I will also critique the mainstream LGBT rights movement and the media attention given same-sex marriage for their lack of attention to the classed relations embedded in marriage rights. A materialist feminist analysis will allow us to see that there's still a need for a larger, more emancipatory sexual politics.

En este artículo tratamos de situar algunos debates recientes de los usos de la teoría de género e identidad de géneros como estrategia de las luchas políticas y organizativas en diálogo con las concepciones semióticas de marcos de inteligibilidad y acción frente a la discriminación y la represión. Situamos la propuesta del Área Queer de la Universidad de Buenos Aires desde 1994 para considerar núcleos de activismo que permitieron visibilizar en la universidad pública los debates sobre las crecientes desigualdades sociales desde las luchas de diferentes movimientos políticos por los derechos LGBT. Simultáneamente, situamos el argumento respecto de las formas de disciplinamiento neoconservador que producía reclamos de identidad restrictiva a través de la extrema visibilidad y fetichización de las diferencias en la industria cultural pero también a través de la vigilancia y la persecución a los colectivos LGBT en la vida pública cotidiana. ; In this article, we attempt to situate some recent debates about the uses of gender theory and gender identity theory as a strategy for political and organisational struggles in dialogue with semiotic conceptual tools such as that of 'frameworks of intelligibility and action', as a response to discrimination and repression. We situate the proposal and programme developed since 1994 by the 'Area Queer' [Queer Group] of the University of Buenos Aires, in order to consider those foci of activism that made it possible to render visible, within the space of the public university, the debates about increasing social inequalities from the viewpoint of the struggles carried out by different political movements fighting for LGBT rights. At the same time, we aim to situate the argument about the forms of neo-conservative disciplining that tend to produce claims for restricted identities not only through the extreme visibility and fetishization of differences in the cultural industries, but also through surveillance and the persecution of LGBT collectives and groups in everyday public life.

Resumo: O presente artigo é fruto das reflexões realizadas na dissertação de mestrado que teve como objetivo analisar os discursos no Congresso Nacional (CN) brasileiro sobre as famílias homoparentais. A partir dessa pesquisa foi possível identificar o direcionamento político-teórico de alguns movimentos como o LGBT, que, ao demandarem direitos via CN, e dentro dos limites deste, tratam a individualidade como processo pessoal e desconectado da totalidade. É tendo em vista esta fragmentação e os limites que ela impõe à luta por uma real emancipação humana, que colocamos em discussão neste artigo algumas reflexões sobre a necessidade da vinculação entre movimento LGBT e luta anticapitalista. The movement and the anticapitalist camapaing: a necessary link! Abstract: This article comes from the discussions that arose on master's degree dissertation, which had the purpose to analyze the speeches on the Brazilian National Congress (CN) regarding homoparental families. Starting from that research we were able to identify the political-theoretical orientation of some social movements, such as the LGBT movement, which, by requiring their rights via CN, and within those limits, treat the individuality as a personal matter, disconnected from the totality. Given that fragmentation and it's imposed limits to struggle towards the real human emancipation, we put into question, in this article, some considerations about the need to link the LGBT movement and the anticapitalist activism.

Right-wing movements in Latin America play a significant role in the region's political life. In this sense, they are not distinct from those analysed in Europe or the United States. Nonetheless, these movements have not generated anything like the level of analysis of their counterparts in those regions. They remain woefully understudied. This paper attempts to fill that void by analysing right-wing movements in one of the countries in the region. We use Brazil as a case study to discuss the rise of right-wing mobilization, particularly focussing on backlash to gender and LGBT rights, in Latin America. We do so by looking at how creating a moral panic around topics such as "family threat" set up anti-rights opportunities. We finish with a discussion on the impact of right wing movements for democracy in Brazil, in the region and beyond.
