This thesis is focused on temporal information processing, which is a task framed in the field of natural language processing. The aim of this task is to obtain the temporal location and ordering of the events expressed in text or discourse, which requires the automatic interpretation of temporal expressions, events, and the temporal relations between them. The majority of current approaches are based on morphosyntactic knowledge. However, temporal entities are often ambiguous at that language analysis level. Our hypothesis is that the linguistic expression of time is a semantic phenomenon and therefore, to achieve a better extraction performance, temporal information must be processed using semantics. To prove this hypothesis, we present a semantic approach to temporal information processing: TIPSem. This is an automated system that includes features based on lexical semantics, semantic roles, and temporal semantics, in addition to morphosyntactic features. TIPSem has been empirically evaluated through the participation in the TempEval-2 international evaluation exercise and subsequent experiments based on this test. The results obtained firmly support the presented hypothesis and their analysis demonstrates that semantic features aid in handling morphosyntactic ambiguity and favour generalization capabilities. These conclusions have been reached for different languages (i.e., English, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese), which supports the defended hypothesis at a multilingual level. Finally, as compared with the state of the art, TIPSem obtains a very competitive performance level and introduces a remarkable improvement in event processing. TIPSem has been applied to the problem of graphical representation of temporal information. We have developed a dynamic interface which brings users time-based access to information: Time-Surfer. Algunes opinions consideren que tot el teatre és social; i això és així perquè sense el grup no existeix, és un acte de comunicació entre persones: actors i públic. En alguns formats de teatre social, la divisió entre públic i actors es trenca expressament per a generar rerlexió i canvi. El teatre és un recurs que ens permet articular propostes d'expressió amb llenguatges ben diversos com la dansa, la plàstica, la música, l 'expressió corporal, oral i escrita, vinculades en un projecte comú en que els participants poden trobar el millor espai per a desenvolupar-se. This research analyses the patterns of social interaction of a specific group of young people who play on-line games in a cybercafe in Barcelona. This group can be classified as a hybrid -on-line/ off-line- since their face-to-face interaction alternates with, and is frequently superimposed on, their virtual interaction. This means that the delocalization that accompanies other uses of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) occurs only in a limited way. What does take place is a reinterpretation of the forms of social interaction of whatever group of young people; at the same time, there is also an interpretation of new information technologies, adapting them to traditional forms of socialization. It is possible to observe how physical place and cyberplace are united and intermingled in various ways, as are face-to-face life and cyber-experience.

The objective of this thesis is to explore in greater depth the process of creating a public health observatory and the processing of the information needed to take territorial decisions in the county of Alt Empordà. The outcome is the creation of Indika, the Health and Social Pole of the Alt Empordà. Indika is a public health agency that acts as the territory's health and well-being agent. The objective of Indika is to generate knowledge about the impact of social determinants of health in Alt Empordà. To do so, it uses a working framework based on three points: to inform, to discuss, and to act. This working framework served to produce the visual information solutions, including infographics, collections of indicators, and a web application whose purpose is to portray the existing problems in the territory to start debate with the different political and social agents to take decisions on improvement initiatives. Apart from creating a public health observatory, two parallel lines of action have also been developed in this thesis: the creation of public structures to store information based on events as a way of structuring medical information. These two lines of investigation have resulted in the creation of the "Indika Data Repository", an information repository about the county of Alt Empordà, using the collaborative platform GitHub and the implementation of the eventr package in R programming language, and currently published in the Comprehensive R Archive Network. Aquest article analitza com l'escriptor i periodista Josep Pla va contribuir a crear un estat d'opinió sobre una part important del nostre patrimoni cultural i urbà, com és el modernisme arquitectònic. Els seus plantejaments estètics van variar d'un període a l'altre, amb la qual cosa es demostra que la cultura pot ser objecte de manipulació per part de la política i dels mitjans de comunicació per a imposar principis que tenen poc a veure amb els seus valors estètics i ideològics inicials. ; This article examines how the writer and journalist Josep Pla contributed to opinion formation regarding architectural modernisme, an important part of Catalan cultural and urban heritage. The fact that Pla's aesthetic proposals varied from one period to another demonstrates how culture is manipulated by politics and the media so as to impose principles that have little to do with initial ideological and aesthetic values. ; Este artículo analiza cómo el escritor y periodista Josep Pla contribuyó a crear un estado de opinión sobre una parte importante de nuestro patrimonio cultural y urbano, como es el modernismo arquitectónico. El franquismo fue una dictadura brutal, pero no siempre fue igual. En los años cuarenta y cincuenta se vivió en una dictadura similar a las fascistas, en un clima de guerra civil, de represión y de terror. La sociedad vivía en el miedo y/o en la sumisión. Las minorías resistentes eran heroicas, pero no modificaban el régimen político. Durante los años sesenta, ciertos sectores de la sociedad empiezan a perder gradualmente el miedo; el Estado no controla la vida social ni la cotidianidad en el uso de la lengua; se desarrolla la lucha sindical pese a la represión; el mundo universitario y cultural menosprecia el franquismo y, a finales de los años sesenta, emergen demandas y protestas sociales en los barrios populares. En este marco, los núcleos políticos, la mayoría de izquierdas y nacionalistas, empiezan a enraizarse en los ámbitos más críticos del régimen. La Transición pactada era casi inevitable. La mayoría de la sociedad no quería la continuidad del franquismo, aunque temían un cambio traumático y violento. El resultado fue un inicio democrático formal. No obstante, el franquismo institucional estaba presente en las Fuerzas Armadas, en la alta burocracia, en la Judicatura, etc. La Transición fue un inicio de democratización. ; Francoism was a brutal dictatorship, but it was not always that way. During the 1940s and 1950s, people in Spain lived under a dictatorship like that of other fascist dictatorships, in a civil war atmosphere of repression and terror. Society lived in fear and/or submission; resistant minorities were heroic, but they did not change the political regime. In the 1970s, some segments of society gradually began to lose their fear; the Spanish state no longer controlled social or daily life regarding the use of language; the fight of the trade unions grew despite State repression; universities and cultural spheres despised Francoism and, by the end of the decade, social demands and protests emerged in working-class neighbourhoods. In this context, the political cores -most of the left as well as nationalists- began to take root in the most critical areas of the regime and an 'agreed transition' became almost inevitable. Most of society did not want the Franco regime to continue, but they also feared a traumatic and violent change. The result was a formal democratic beginning. However, institutional Francoism was still present, for example, in the armed forces, the upper echelons of bureaucracy, and the Judiciary. En les últimes dècades els conceptes de «nació» i «identitat territorial» han patit una transformació en els àmbits polítics i acadèmics, amb un canvi de conceptes ètnic-culturals tradicionalment dominants a uns altres de caràcter políticocívic. Els primers tendeixen a definir la identitat a través d'elements objectius (llengua, història, territori, cultura, tradicions, etc.) mentre que els segons adopten un enfocament més subjectiu (bàsicament, «la voluntat de ser»). En aquest treball aprofundim en aquesta transformació en el cas de la identitat europea. Per a això, proposem un enfocament qualitatiu i evolutiu que utilitza textos promoguts per la UE (declaracions i tractats), en els quals la identitat juga un paper rellevant. Realitzem una anàlisi de contingut que selecciona aquells elements que han arribat a objectivar la identitat europea (i, com a contrast, mirem aquells elements que incideixen en la identitat dels Estats membres). Si bé identifiquem un avanç en la concepció políticocivil com a reflex de la tendència general, encara queden elements objectius d'orientació cultural en els textos del segle XXI. Això reflecteix la necessitat de presentar públicament una identitat en construcció com una cosa naturalitzada i com a part d'una realitat construïda a través dels temps. Per a Europa els conceptes amb major presència són «identitat europea» (més freqüent en informes i declaracions breus), «cultura europea» i «patrimoni comú europeu» (més comú en els tractats). Si bien identificamos un avance en la concepción político-civil como reflejo de la tendencia general, aún quedan elementos objetivos de orientación cultural en los textos del siglo XXI. Esto refleja la necesidad de presentar públicamente una identidad en construcción como algo naturalizado y como parte de una realidad construida a través de los tiempos. Para Europa los conceptos con mayor presencia son «identidad europea» (más frecuente en informes y declaraciones breves), «cultura europea» y «patrimonio común europeo» (más común en los tratados). Estos conceptos, en cierto sentido, reflejan una realidad determinada. ; In recent decades the concepts of "nation" and "territorial identity" have undergone a transformation in terms of politics and academia, with a shift from traditionally dominant ethno-cultural concepts to others of a political-civic nature. The former tend to define identity through objective elements (language, history, territory, culture, traditions, etc.) while the latter take a more subjective approach (basically, 'the will to be'). In this paper, we delve into this transformation in the case of European identity. To this end, we propose a qualitative and evolutionary approach that uses texts promoted by the EU (declarations and treaties), in which identity plays a relevant role. We carry out a content analysis that singles out those elements that have come to objectify the European identity (and, as a contrast, we look at those elements bearing on the identity of the Member States). While we identify an advance in the political-civil conception as a reflection of the general trend, culturally-oriented objective elements still remain in 21st Century texts. This reflects the need to publicly present an identity in construction as something naturalised, and as part of a reality built through the ages. For Europe the concepts with greatest presence are "European identity" (more frequent in reports and brief declarations), "European culture" and "common European heritage" (more common in the treaties). These are concepts that, in some sense, reflect a given reality.
