John Oliver Killens's politically charged novels And Then We Heard the Thunder and The Cotillion; or One Good Bull Is Half the Herd, were nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Abstract This article focuses on the accelerating technical progress, rationality, and its socio-political issues. It is considered that the control over communication, media, and arts does not necessarily mean that such power is exercised politically, but more that it is contained in politics. While technological development is an outstanding representative of forms, it has been observed that building a narrative through images is dependent on the artificer or artist's ability to develop and perform concerning the idea of transforming or improving. Apart from the attraction of images, which has always been emphasized in the communication process and language development, the experience of aesthetics is changing because of technological advances. Moreover, several notions have been added to the discussion, such as those about progress, the social impact of automation, and the role of intellectuals and scientists as builders of the "invention," generating "the artificer." ; Highlights: Analysis of how socio-political factors are determined by rationality through art and media; Understanding the range of concepts relating to technological developments and the role of human beings; Discussing the ability humans have to achieve positive results in relation to their sociocultural circumstances.

The economic and demographic dimension does the most important and tangible work in Sinicising Xinjiang. Since 1949, millions of Han people have migrated to Xinjiang. By their presence in large numbers and their industrious development of the region, the Han people have made their culture, the Chinese language and the PRC's economy, powerful Sinicising forces in the region. On a political and cultural level, the strategy involves giving the appearance of permitting Uyghur autonomy that cultivates a harmonious, multi-ethnic region that respects cultural differences, while actually denying Uyghur culture the possibility of growing - or even maintaining its current status. And finally, the brutal security measures in Xinjiang prevent Uyghur separatists from cohering into a large and effective movement. This buys time for the other dimensions of the Sinicisation strategy to work. This thesis concludes that the CCP's strategy is effective and if it continues to be pursued, is likely to eventually succeed. Once achieved, successful Sinicisation would mean that culturally, economically, politically, and to the greatest extent practicable in terms of transportation and communication infrastructure, Xinjiang would be extremely difficult to separate from China. Uyghur and other Turkic peoples would become culturally Chinese.

Current animal research ethics frameworks emphasise consequentialist ethics through cost-benefit or harm-benefit analysis. However, these ethical frameworks along with institutional animal ethics approval processes cannot satisfactorily decide when a given potential benefit is outweighed by costs to animals. The consequentialist calculus should, theoretically, provide for situations where research into a disease or disorder is no longer ethical, but this is difficult to determine objectively. Public support for animal research is also falling as demand for healthcare is rising. Democratisation of animal research could help resolve these tensions through facilitating ethical health consumerism or giving the public greater input into deciding the diseases and disorders where animal research is justified. Labelling drugs to disclose animal use and providing a plain-language summary of the role of animals may help promote public understanding and would respect the ethical beliefs of objectors to animal research. National animal ethics committees could weigh the competing ethical, scientific, and public interests to provide a transparent mandate for animal research to occur when it is justifiable and acceptable. Democratic processes can impose ethical limits and provide mandates for acceptable research while facilitating a regulatory and scientific transition towards medical advances that require fewer animals.

Wisdom has always been one of the main human aspirations and its importance has been encoded in language since ancient Greece. With reference to the theoretical presumptions and methods of Lublin cognitive ethnolinguistics, this master's thesis aims to explore wisdom and its perception, worldview, evaluation, and its place in the set of moral values and virtues appreciated by the Lithuanian nation. The main part of this thesis consists of a concept analysis which is structured in three parts. The first part is an investigation of data from dictionaries. It reflects the given definitions and examples of the word wisdom and its derivatives in contemporary Lithuanian dictionaries, synonymic and antonymic relations, phraseology, and etymology. The second part opposes the first in the sense that it analyzes data from a students' survey and represents the contemporaryperception of wisdom of a young person from Lithuania. The third part contains an analysis of data from six different discourses: philosophical, political, religious, social, publicistic, and literary. It shows similarities and differences between main elements of wisdom exposed in various discourses. Finally, based on the material collected, the cognitive definition is formulated. It reflects the actual perception of wisdom in Lithuanian's mind, together with its importance, development, and coherence to other values and virtues.

The English-language historiography of the Eastern Front of World War II is notably sparse until the late 1980s and early 1990s. In the first couple of post-war decades, memoirs written by former generals in the Wehrmacht, the armed forces of the Third Reich, dominated the historical conversation. These memoirs created the myth of the clean and apolitical Wehrmacht, where military operations and genocidal policy were separate. According to this narrative, it was the Nazi leadership and the SS that committed large-scale atrocities on the Eastern Front while the Wehrmacht focused only on winning the war. Anglo-American historians largely accepted these accounts, mainly because of Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union. The experiences of German generals were invaluable insights into Soviet doctrine, and therefore the generals tendency to downplay their own complicity in Nazi war crimes was largely accepted. Increasing access to German and later Soviet archives in the 1980s and 1990s revealed that this was far from the truth. Recent historical works have demonstrated that genocidal policy and war strategy were inextricably linked. The question of why the Wehrmacht accepted Nazi ideology is more difficult to answer. Historians have applied this question to both the High Command and to the everyday soldiers, with differing conclusions.

From his conception of language and man, Bonald designs a hierarchical and organized world categories necessary, with a theological basis, on which God and the divine laws are the basis and legitimacy to social relations and human laws, necessarily subordinated to those. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Indonesia and The Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in 2005 in Helsinki officially ended the armed separatist movement in Aceh. The long history of separatist movement in the region has created the question of identity between Acehnese and Indonesian identities among Acehnese. This study investigated the construction of Acehnese identity in relation to Indonesian identity in Serambi Indonesia, the most prominent local media, after the signing of the Helsinki peace accord. This study has used a textual analysis to examine the construction of Acehnese identity through the use of symbolic language. The sample of 88 articles collected from July 2012 to May 2013 were analysed based on five coding categories; themes, framing perspectives, labels to describe Aceh, labels to describe Indonesia, and depiction of Aceh-Indonesia relations. Findings reveal that Serambi Indonesia has managed to negotiate the tension between Acehnese and Indonesian identities. The newspaper overtly legitimates Aceh as an Indonesian region while maintaining the specialty of Aceh in comparison to other provinces of Indonesia. These findings suggested that the local media have played a significant role in identity reconciliation during the reconciliation process in post-conflict area

While Sami identity work is described as a continuous process carried out in everyday life, the subject is addressed through a presentation and discussion of three narratives. The analysis demonstrates how different types of development have expanded access for Samis with disabilities to participate in traditional Sami activities in many ways and, as such, have increased their opportunities to identify themselves as Sami. At the same time, however, changes in laws and regulations concerning ownership and use of land and sea resources seem to constitute political barriers that hinder disabled Samis from pursuing traditional Sami occupations and activities such as fishing and reindeer herding. Furthermore, 'cultural blindness' among professionals within the welfare system seems to block opportunities for Samis with disabilities to access their own culture through language and traditional Sami way of life. This lack of connection to traditional Sami activities is problematic as it may lead to the perception among both disabled Sami individuals and other Samis that these individuals are not entitled to define themselves as Sami.

Ervas and Gola's condensed volume, meant as a guide to beginners studying metaphor, provides them with a historical survey of the multiple theoretical approaches from ancient to modern times. Furthermore, it presents several aspects and recent applications of metaphor in communication (see politics, advertisements, art, science, didactics). At the latest since the argumentative turn, the crucial importance of language, narratives and discourses in the field of planning and policy-making is widely acknowledged. This can be particularly important for European spatial planning, for which the European Union (EU) does not have any formal competence. Thus, instead of enacting directives or regulations, the EU and its member states release legally non-binding documents, which contain ideas and objectives relevant to planning. In these documents, certain storylines can be identified, for example, regarding sustainability, balanced development and competitiveness. This article argues that there is another storyline, advocating the reduction of borders and the creation of new, soft spaces across Europe, such as city regions, cross-border regions or macro-regions. If picked up by national or sub-national actors, this storyline can play a crucial role in contributing to establish the legitimacy that soft spaces often lack. Based on empirical findings from the city region of Graz in Austria, the article aims to identify the elements of a discourse coalition, i.e. what the EU does to support soft spaces, who the actors reproducing the storyline are and how the storyline supports soft planning in practice. ; Peer reviewed

This article aims to identify how digital public opinion was articulated on Twitter during the visit of the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to Mexico City in 2016 by invitation from the Mexican government, which was preceded by the threat to construct a border wall that Mexico would pay for. Using a mixed methodology made up of computational methods such as data mining and social network analysis combined with content analysis, the authors identify conversational patterns and the structures of the net-works formed, beginning with this event involving the foreign policy of both countries that share a long border. The authors study the digital media practices and emotional frameworks these social network users employed to involve themselves in the controversial visit, marked by complex political, cultural and historical relations. The analysis of 352,203 tweets in two languages (English and Spanish), those most used in the conversations, opened the door to an understanding as to how transnational public opinion is articulated in connective actions detonated by newsworthy events in distinct cultural contexts, as well as the emotional frameworks that permeated the conversation, whose palpable differences show that Twitter is not a homogeneous universe, but rather a set of universes co-determined by sociocultural context.
