Von Fabian Erlenmaier. Am 17. Juli 2014 schossen russische Soldaten im Donbas mit einer Bodenluftrakete auf ein Passagierflugzeug. Das in Amsterdam gestartete Flugzeug mit dem Ziel Kuala Lumpur stürzte ab. Alle 298 Insassen des Flugs MH17 starben. Roman Ljubyjs Film Iron Butterflies (2023) dokumentiert auf beeindruckende Weise ein Kriegsverbrechen. Der Auftaktfilm des Ukrainian Film Festival Berlin macht dieses für eine breite Öffentlichkeit sichtbar.

Im Zuge der aktuellen klimapolitischen Debatten rückt der Konsum tierischer Produkte in den Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit. Zwar geht der Fleischkonsum in Deutschland tendenziell zurück, jedoch zählen wir nach wie vor zu den europa- als auch weltweit größten Fleischproduzenten. Die im internationalen Wettbewerb stehende und exportorientierte Branche ist hoch spezialisiert und regional stark konzentriert. Neben negativen Umweltwirkungen, wie die zuletzt durch den Europäischen Gerichtshof angemahnte erhöhte Nitratbelastung von Wasserressourcen, rücken tierschutzpolitische Aspekte in den Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit. Die Mehrheit der Europäer gibt in repräsentativen Umfragen an, dass der Schutz der Nutztiere, sogar vor dem Umweltschutz, eine der wichtigsten Aufgaben von Landwirten sein sollte (Eurobarometer Daten 2016). Ein weiteres Indiz ist die kürzlich abgeschlossene Europäische Bürgerinitiative (ECI) "End the Cage Age", die sich für ein Verbot von Käfighaltung in der Nutztierhaltung einsetzt (mit über 1,5 Millionen Unterschriften zählt sie zu den drei erfolgreichsten ECIs überhaupt; ab 1 Million Unterschriften muss die EU Kommission über die Forderungen beraten).
