Language rights are included among the fundamental human rights and most countries worldwide nowadays have ad hoc legislations to protect their historical and territorial language minorities. The matter becomes more complicated when the languages to be protected are those of immigrants, who, on the other hand, have also the duty to learn, at an adequate level of competence and proficiency, the language of the place where they settle down. Linguistic rights and duties, that should all fall under the Latin 'umbrella' term of ius, are the subject of analysis in this contribution, which mainly aims at providing hints of reflection on an intricate and by no means easily solvable situation, with special reference to the Italian context. In the last paragraph a proposal is put forward to introduce in the debate the newly-coined concept of ius linguarum, as a possible 'jimmy' of the twisted matter.
Focusing on broad-spectrum communicative realizations like digital texts, which combines linguistic and extra-linguistic communication, we notice that in order to proceed with a textual analysis, it becomes essential to develop a theoretical sensitivity to the range of heterogeneous manifestations they present. All the layers and all the interconnections necessary to describe them are offered by J.S. Petőfi theoretical framework. In this contribution we offer an example of how his interpretative models, as explained in his essay La testologia semiotica e la comunicazione multimediale (1996), can be effectively applied to the analysis of some emblematic cases of NGO political online communication. In fact, Petőfi at the end of the twentieth century already understood that the spread of digital communication would bring out the need for a hybrid approach to text analysis: an approach that is remarkably close to the nature itself of digital hypertexts.
This article investigates the differences between the Italian translations of European Union (EU) directives and the Italian used in national laws. It focuses on the lexical features of comparable and parallel corpora and their mutual influence. Differences emerge in terms of both lexical richness (greater in national laws) and register (also higher in national texts). Moreover, the specific text-structure of EU directives is signalled by a greater number of connectors. Lexical differences also involve repeated segments: national laws show greater variation, whereas the segments used in EU directives are more specific. In terms of style, features used at national level impact on the Italian translations of EU texts. For example, in parallel corpora, the style of Italian texts is more formal than the style of their English counterparts. This shows that Italian translators of EU directives are heavily influenced by the stylistic choices made when drafting national laws. So it is Italian law-makers who need to relinquish stylistically marked features when drafting legal texts. Then, translators can follow suit. The opposite would be – of course – unimaginable.
The discourse of political activism makes use in many cases of an intertextual rereading of historical events for purposes of discussion. This is the case of the action of the Zentrum für Politische Schönheit Erster Europäischer Mauerfall, which took place in Berlin in 2014. The action evokes the Berlin Wall and its fall in a prototypical way to project its political discourse on all the walls currently present in the world and on the consequences of their existence for some political minorities. This contribution, remaining within the theoretical horizon of digital multimodality, intends to focus on the pragmatic and linguistic strategies recurring in this action, identifying the different plans for constructing the discourse and the numerous visual linguistics conflicts essential to the communication of contents. ; The discourse of political activism makes use in many cases of an intertextual rereading of historical events for purposes of discussion. The Stone Guest. The Soviet Rediscovery of Formal Linguistics Towards the Early Chomsky After Stalin's death, Soviet linguistics seemingly steered in a new direction, enthusiastically adopting mathematical methods within the upsurge of interest in machine translation. This fos- tered the acceptance of formal models disjointed from the rigid dictates of dialectical materialism and paved the way for the rediscovery of the scientific legacy of (post-)structuralist Euroamerican schools. In the eyes of the protagonists of this epistemological change, linguistics seemed to be freed from the traditional methodological constraints imposed by philology and literature. This short- lived yet intense period, however, is characterized by the polyphonic coexistence of several ideas and personalities, whose research activity can be properly understood and evaluated only from a broader historical perspective, encompassing both earlier and later stages, thus substantially cur- tailing the explanatory power of historical and thematic periodization. The study aims at examin- ing the salient characteristics of the scientific environment surrounding the early critical reception of Noam Chomsky's Syntactic Structures in the Soviet Union. By tackling specific terminological and epistemological issues, it is argued that the evolution of Soviet linguistics was not defined by abrupt saltational processes, but rather by a constant pendular oscillation which – depending on cultural, political, and historical circumstances – would grant temporary priority to some scientific approaches and orientations at the expense of others.
With this article, we introduce our project for enlarging the Italian-Russian parallel corpus of the NKRJa (Nacional'nyj korpus russkogo jazyka) and outline several of its current and future applications. The newly expanded corpus has now reached roughly four million words, and we expect to reach 20 million, the size required for a corpus that is balanced and reliable. In order to illustrate possible applications for the Italian-Russian parallel corpus, we offer two examples: the first is its experimental use in the teaching of translation at the University of Bologna; the second its use in the context of research in Russian-Italian Contrastive Linguistics on the topic of the non-temporal qualities of the Russian future tense.
This article illustrates the results of the third stage of a research project on the generic structure and linguistic traits of court judgments written in Italian. Four corpora in electronic format have been compiled, including texts by the Court of Justice of the European Union, the Italian Court of Cassation, the Swiss Federal Court and the Appeal Court of Canton Ticino. Statistical software was used to assess differences in terms of lexical richness, lexical density and readability and to calculate verb tense frequencies and distribution patterns. The shortcomings of automatic quantitative analysis may be redressed through qualitative surveys and, in addition to highlighting differences in the Italian written in Italy, Switzerland and the EU institutions, data can provide insights and suggestions for more effective drafting techniques.
