This paper shows a set of techniques designed purpose of graph construction aimed at the apparition of either concepts or issues in a collection of texts. The aim is to analyze graphically the semantic connections that can be found in a selected textual corpus as a complement to the study of the statistical frequency of the different elements. The key contribution of this proposal is the use of network analysis for those items that are statistically connected. The use and range of these techniques are shown through the analysis of a database compiled by J.J. Linz composed by more than 76.000 Spanish newspapers articles on the transition to the democracy, published between 1958 and 1987.

Since Robert Dahl's seminal writings on democracy more than two decades ago, interest in the topic has emerged again, especially among scholars analyzing democratic transitions. Great strides have been made in revealing the uncertain nature of these transitions (O'Donnell et al. 1986; Malloy and Seligson 1987; Diamond, Linz, and Lipset 1989; Hakim and Lowenthal 1991; O'Donnell 1994), in methodologically analyzing them as contested and "crafted" rather than spontaneous (Di Palma 1990), and in documenting the class and social forces that make democratic outcomes more likely (Rueschemeyer, Stephens, and Stephens 1992; see also Moore 1966). Despite these advances, there has been little change in our theoretical understanding of democracy. As Bruce Cumings has perceptively noted, recent studies of democratic transition have "given way to atheoretical and idiosyncratic explanations of more or less successful democratic 'openings'" in which little time is spent elaborating "the decision rule for saying this person is hard-line or soft-line, that system is 'liberalized autocracy' instead of 'limited democracy,'" or for defining democracy itself. If scholars do bring theory into their writings "through the back door of the obscure but telling footnote," he observes, "rather than advancing their own conception of democracy, [they] uniformly define democracy by reference to Robert Dahl's Polyarchy, a classic pluralist account of the North American system" (Cumings 1989:15–17).
Similar to most industrialized countries, female labor supply in Austria has been increasing for the last decades, while labor force participation for men has been constant or even somewhat declining. This working paper - in cooperation with the University of Linz - provides an insight into wage elasticities concerning work participation and weekly hours for Austrian men and women between 1987 and 1999. It presents the almost continuous reduction in the labor supply reactions of married women. While their elasticity was still several times larger at the beginning of the 1980s, they approached rapidly the much less elastic behavior of men. These developments are important for the analysis of deadweight losses of taxation as well as the effects of tax reforms and wage subsidy programs. In this paper we differentiate between married and never-married women; which is very important in explaining labour force participation. As these differences are negligible for men we refrain from this distinction. Labor supply elasticities give an impression about attachment to the labor force; very high elasticities of (married) women have often been interpreted as evidence for low labor force attachment and a traditional family role model: the male bread-winner model where female market participation was considered as supplementary and more volatile. Due to increasing educational attainment of women, developments on the marriage market - lower marriage and higher divorce rates - and most importantly changing social roles and norms, it can be expected that this traditional male-breadwinner model will have considerably lost its importance.
; The issue of health in relation to work and the age of working individuals is socially relevant as well as subject of political discourse. This Master's thesis therefore examines the relationship between occupational strain and self-perceived health as well as the psychological well-being of employees. Furthermore it asks how these correlations are related to age. Based on the underlying theory, a research model which creates the base of this analysis is created. Two surveys are used, which were carried out by Johannes Kepler University in cooperation with the (former) OÖ GKK (2015) and the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labour (2018). This is a secondary analysis of the data collected. The work is based on different theoretical models that explain the relationship between workloads and health: The Demand-Control Model (Karasek/Theorell 1990), the Job Gratification Crisis Model (Siegrist 1996) and the Job Demand Resource Model (Bakker/Demerouti 2001). For the aspect of age, the Lifespan Development Theory (Baltes 1987) is used. The following analyses show that some of the investigated stress factors (e.g. high time pressure, poor work-life balance, frequent interruptions) are associated with poorer health. Moreover, some of these relationships vary according to the age of the respondents, which means that the health of certain age groups is more negatively affected than others. The health of older workers is more negatively affected by high job insecurity compared to other age groups. Based on the results, considerations are made as to how work should be designed in order not to have a negative impact on the health of those in employment. ; eingereicht von Stephanie Müller-Wipperfürth ; Universität Linz, Masterarbeit, 2021 ; (VLID)5980293
