"When scholarship presents the histories, belief systems, and ritual patterns of specific religious groups, it often privileges victorious and élite fractions of those communities to the detriment and neglect of alternative, dissonant, and resurgent voices. The contributions in this volume, which include case studies on various religions and academic contexts, illustrate the importance of listening to those alternative voices for the study of religion."--Back cover

With his reportages on German-Polish relations, Wlodzimierz Nowak has found his own style. His stories are tight, laconic, and unsparing. Some seem disturbing. Looking back on Mein Warschaukoller, which is about a Wehrmacht soldier who helped put down the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, Nowak discusses the art of questioning and the art of listening, reveals what he hates about his profession, and admits that he has sometimes caught himself calling himself a reporter and still not knowing life. Analyzes violent xenophobic offenses against ethnic, political, & social minorities, drawing on interview data from male German arrested offenders. A situational approach was used. Three main results are presented in this article. First it is shown that two different situational configurations precede the offenses. The first one is characterized by a positive mood, drinking alcohol, being together with friends, & listening to music. The other situation could be described by a negative mood, frustrating experiences & being alone. Secondly, a perceived provocation is the most common imminent stimulus for xenophobic aggressive behavior. However often the perceived provocation was provoked by the former behavior of the offenders based on their high readiness for using aggressive behavior in general. Three different imminent stimuli are described. The last presented result refers to the motives that the xenophobic aggressive behavior is based on. It could be shown that the presentation of power, dominance, & toughness is the most frequent motive for xenophobic aggressive behavior. 29 References. Adapted from the source document.
