The article examines the influence of V.S. Solovyov on the writers and poets of the Silver age. On the material of the works of Solovyov, related to the «сhinese theme»: the articles «Russia and Europe», «China and Europe», «Japan», «The enemy from the East»; the review of the first volume of works by E.E. Ukhtomsky; the poems «Panmongolizm» and «Dragon»;the tractate «The three conversations about war, progress and the end of world history»; the letter «About the recent events», – is evaluated his influence on D.S. Merezhkovsky's articles: «Yellow-faced positivists», «The coming ham», V.I. Ivanov's articles «Russia, England and Asia», «Inspiration of horror», V.M. Doroshevich's story «Goddess», V.V. Veresaev's story «Under the cedars»; «Chinese poems» and the articles of V.J. Bryusov. The political context of the works, the tradition of depicting China in Russian literature, literary and sinological works on this topic are taken into account. The comparative analysis of texts, the coincidence of a number of theoretical positions, and separate definitions and epithets are revealed. The numbers of Solovyov's positions are revealed, which are reflected in the works of Merezhkovsky and Ivanov: materialism and positivism of the Chinese, the «emptiness» of their philosophy, the denial of life and progress, the «yellow danger», the need for the Christianization of China (the last position in Merezhkovsky is not). Doroshevich's story, written at the height of the ikhetuan rebellion («boxer rebellion»), was influenced by the philosopher's eschatological prophecies. The negative image of China in the poetry of V.J. Bryusov is the textual confirmation of the influence of Solovyov, noted by modern literary criticism.
The article analyzes the role of the unpronounceable (silent) consonant 'h' and the image of the mute letter in Herman Melville's poetics, especially in Moby-Dick, or The Whale. The paper discusses the indistinction of textual objects (the word 'whale', the title of the novel The Whale) and images (white sperm whale Moby Dick, pale characters in Melville's short stories), which is key for characterizing Melville's works as autometatexts. The common characteristics that unite both layers - the graphic, auditory existence of the text and the fictional world of the novel - are 'silence' and 'visibility'. The article examines the structure-forming role of these concepts for the system of the images and motifs and their conceptualization within the framework of Melville's philosophy of creativity and the paradox of the genius who is able to tell the Truth in fiction. The act of creating and reading a text is identified with the process of drawing and seeing a silent letter; the novel then is a transformation field for both the writer and the reader into an architect and a stonemason on the way to comprehending the secret knowledge through the matter of language. The article takes into account the interpretations of the role of the letter 'h' in the novel that are classical in Anglophone Melville studies; the methodology of the French philosophers, who wrote about Melville's work; and modern interpretations from Russian literary criticism.
Objective: to reveal the specific features of the artistic model of the world in K. McCarthy's "The Road" as a philosophical and allegorical novel. Methods: dialectic, genetic, hermeneutic, structural-semiotic, intertextual, systemic. Results of the study can be used in the further study of the philosophical and allegorical novel from the standpoint of modern aesthetics, cultural studies, literary criticism, comparative studies, which, in turn, will deepen understanding of the modern literary process. Conclusion. In his prose writer raises the questions of the relationship of people in the family and the relationship of a person with God, the meaning of human existence and a person's place in the world. Problems of communication between generations, humanity, sacrifice are the main ones for the author. Humanity, according to the author, experienced the first catastrophe even during the Fall, and from that moment it found itself in the confinement of a post-apocalyptic state. The biblical layer of the novel deepens the connection between the problem of post-apocalypse and Christianity, and McCarthy becomes the author of a new religiosity based not so much on faith in God as on interaction between people based on trust, love, renunciation and redemption. T. McCarthy's work opens up new horizons for creating numerous allegories, raising the question of "literature (how artificial is realism?), Existence (are we capable of genuine existence?), Politics (what is left of identity politics?) and law (Where do we define boundaries, what and whom are we excluding and why?) ". The allegory of the Apocalypse in T. McCarthy's novel has the meaning of loneliness, isolationism, renewal, memory, movement, road, death, survival. The author uses a sophisticated storytelling technique (extraspection technique) and experiments with the use of a new language that would be characteristic of the world after the Apocalypse.
In the paper, we examine chapters XXI–XXIII of War and Peace Book 3 Part 1, where Tolstoy depicts the preparations of the Russian nation to the war of 1812. He portrays the visit of Alexander I to Moscow and his meeting with people: first in the Kremlin, then in the Sloboda Palace, where nobles and merchants are gathered to define the conditions on which militia should be organized. The political problem stated in these chapters could be formulated as the problem of legitimacy of the supreme power, as well as of its relationship with the citizens. We state that the Kremlin scene in chapter XXI shows an archaic scenario of power that could remind of the old Russian tradition of the Zemsky Sobor. The next two chapters represent a more modern and more western scenario of power in the form of the advisory assembly with estate representation. In our opinion, Tolstoy, while creating these episodes, was deeply impressed by publications on D. V. Karakozov's attempt on the life of Alexander II and by the Slavophiles' and Westernizers' (mainly B. N. Chicherin's) works on the Ancient Russian and Western models of popular representation. ; Thematically, this article lies within the research field connected with the study of urban "supertexts" and is relevant for contemporary literary criticism. The subject of the research is the literary image of Zmeinogorsk, a town representative of the Ore Altai as a whole. The author refers to works of art about the town which she has discovered. They are based on folklore, historical, and geographic texts. The methodological basis of the article is the study of "urban texts" by representatives of the Tartu–Moscow Semiotic School (V. N. Toporov, Yu. M. Lotman) and their modern followers, as well as the geo-poetic approach that studies cultural forms of the structure of terrestrial space (V. V. Abashev). Analysis of fiction about Zmeinogorsk reveals the main tendencies in the literary representation of the urban theme. The image of Zmeinogorsk comes close to the image of Yekaterinburg on the typological and genetic levels. The historical story by P. A. Borodkin Secrets of Snake Mountain (1966) represents the key semantic opposition of the mining and metallurgical image of the town in the mid-eighteenth century. The author sees it as an antithesis of "paradise (nature) and hell (plant)". The plot of transition from "paradise" to "hell" (P. A. Borodkin) and vice versa (A. P. Heidok) is an invariant for the "Siberian text". It is realised on the "supertext" level. The "snake" toponymy actualises the corresponding mythology and imagery of the town as well as the plot of "fighting a serpent", modified according to social circumstances. The mythological serpent becomes a metaphor of the authorities (P. A. Borodkin, E. Yevtushenko). In modern prose, the Serpent returns its mythological functions as the Guardian of the depths of the earth, but the conflict of the plot is removed in favour of partnership between man and nature (Eustasia Tarasawa). In general, the "supertext" of the town is in its infancy, a significant mythological and semantic potential of Zmeinogorsk is still to be realised. ; The article is supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) and the Government of Altai Territory grant 18-412-220004 "Altai in the National Literature of the 20th–21st Centuries: Cultural and Tourist Potential".
In media, static political media cartoons systematically began to appear in the first half of the 19th century. In the next century, it vividly showed itself in sound media works, into which it entered indirectly through the genre of art parody of literary, musical, cinematic or media sources. To understand the sound parody-with-caricatures, the authors noted the importance of the system of acquired semantic meanings formed by the viewer, primarily related to films and other popular genres. Among the significant Russian-language samples of the political sound media cartoons, the issues of the Russian TV-program Kukli (Puppets) and the German Internet project Zapovednik (Restricted Area with Special Legal Status) were separately analyzed. Zapovednik discovered a new milestone in the development of media genre in the XXI century. Using its issues, the functioning of music and other sounds was briefly reviewed in relation to the moving media cartoons and the parody scene in general. The authors of the study drew particular attention to the multi-level principle of the building a parody-with-caricatures.http://mediamusic-journal.com/Issues/10_6.html
