The speed and progress of transitions towards renewable energy systems varies greatly between European member states. Among others, these differences have been attributed to the emergence of grassroots initiatives (GIs) that develop radical ideas and sustainable practices. The goal of this paper is to understand the differences in the emergence of GIs for renewable energy in relation to the institutional characteristics of Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden. We analyze the possibilities of GIs to emerge and act within three dimensions: the material-economic, the actor-institutional and discursive dimension. We conclude that conditional factors lie within the material-economic dimension in terms of the biophysical conditions, the structure of the economy, energy dependency and the energy market. Within the actor-institutional dimension, we conclude that the presence or absence of fossil fuel incumbents, such as regional utilities, strongly influence the possibilities of GIs. Within the discursive dimension, openness for alternative discourses proved to be enabling for GI-activities, as well as democratized knowledge production. In addition to these conditions of possibility, GIs can also act despite dominant institutions, albeit limited. Finally, GIs need a strong network with knowledge institutes, technology developers and political parties in order to achieve institutional change that enables GIs to flourish. Without institutional space, GIs remain subjected to the dominant power-relations, and cannot exert much influence upon the energy system.

Imprecise measurement tools impede the study of protest mobilization. Mobilization proxies, such as counting protesters and protest events, result in significant outliers and variance while ignoring sociocultural, cybernetic, economic, legal, and other features that relevant academic literature considers essential to understanding mobilization dynamics. Without accurate empirical models, researchers' and policymakers' investigations of autocratic repression have little explanatory power. This thesis proposes a methodological addition to the mobilization literature: Two three-level scales distinguish an event's potential to attract an audience from the protest's actual output relative to similar episodes. I employ the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED) project to demonstrate the measurement's utility. Afterwards, I apply these models to conduct an impact assessment of recent Egyptian cyberregulatory laws. Controlling for the grievances of protesters and performing other robustness checks, the time series demonstrates a strong, statistically significant relationship between the policies and the reduction of low-level potential mobilizational capacity of Egyptian dissidents, but fails to identify an expected relationship between police pressure and the decline of mobilizational capacity. These findings contribute to the theoretical frameworks of mobilization scholars and policymaker discussions regarding the value of internet censorship tools for curtailing oppositional political action.

In crisis-hit countries, intensive risk management increasingly characterizes the presence of international interveners, with measures ranging from fortified compounds to 'remote programming'. This article investigates the global drive for 'security' from an ethnographic perspective, focusing on Afghanistan and Mali. By deploying the concepts of distance and proximity, the article shows how frontline 'outsourcing' and bunkering have generated an unequal 'risk economy' while distancing interveners from local society in a trend that itself generates novel risks. To conclude, the article asks whether alternative forms of proximity may help to break the vicious cycle of danger and distance at work in today's crisis zones.

"Ausgehend von Forschung zu sozialen Vorurteilen und der Theorie der sozialen Identität wird die Partnerwahl von deutschen und türkischen Jugendlichen der 2. Generation analysiert. Grundlage der Studie bildet eine schriftliche Befragung von 100 deutschen und 100 türkischen Jugendlichen zur aktuellen Partnersituation sowie Kriterien der Partnerwahl aus der eigenen Sicht (Autostereotyp) und der vermeintlichen Sicht der anderen Gruppe (vermeintliches Autostereotyp). Die Ergebnisse zeigen ein starkes Gefühl der Zugehörigkeit zur eigenen nationalen Gruppe sowie Unterschiede in den Autostereotypen und zwischen Autostereotypen und vermeintlichen Autostereotypen der jeweils anderen Gruppen. Ebenso lassen sich große Unterschiede zwischen den Autostereotypen und vermeintlichen Autostereotypen aus einer Perspektive feststellen. Die Ergebnisse in diesem Bereich der Partnerwahl lassen weder auf eine Gleichheit der Sichtweisen der beiden Kulturen noch auf ein detailliertes Verständnis für die jeweils andere Kultur schließen. Weiterhin läßt sich sagen, daß die jeweils andere Gruppe in allen untersuchten Variablen - unabhängig von realen Unterschieden - als von der eigenen Gruppe verschieden wahrgenommen wird. Das Fazit dieser Studie lautet daher, daß angesichts einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft wie der unsrigen eine Integration der Türken in Deutschland durch Eheschließung kaum denkbar erscheint, wobei Türken im Hinblick auf Aspekte der Partnerwahl insgesamt eher konservative Werte vertreten als Deutsche."[Autorenreferat]

During the past five decades, adoption practice has been characterized by secrecy and denial. This closed system of adoption has its roots in the assumption that adoption is a one-time legal event. More recently, professionals are recognizing that adoption is a lifelong process with profound effects for adoption triad members throughout their lives. The authors present practice and treatment issues and outline interventions for this specialized population. These issues are reviewed in the context of the experience of adoptees, birth mothers, and adoptive parents. Case anecdotes are used to elucidate points.

Confronting Discrimination and Inequality in China focuses on the most challenging areas of discrimination and inequality in China, including discrimination faced by HIV/AIDS afflicted individuals, rural populations, migrant workers, women, people with disabilities, and ethnic minorities. The Canadian contributors offer rich regional, national, and international perspectives on how constitutions, laws, policies, and practices, both in Canada and in other parts of the world, battle discrimination and the conflicts that rise out of it. The Chinese contributors include some of the most independent-minded scholars and practitioners in China. Their assessments of the challenges facing China in the areas of discrimination and inequality not only attest to their personal courage and intellectual freedom but also add an important perspective on this emerging superpower.

Memory is a defining feature of the human condition. But the vectors and social dynamics of memory, the linkages between the individual and the collective, and the roles that traces of the past play in constituting identities and in shaping political life are complex, varied and contested. So too are the ethical demands that memory makes on us. What is clear, though, is that violence — its grim modalities, its diffuse consequences, its representation and comprehension — must stand at the centre of any understanding of memory and politics. The articles in forum explore some of the intersections between memory, politics and violence. In this introduction I set the scene for them, examining some of the relevant issues at stake and outlining some of the key positions in the scholarly literature.
