In this article, I will address the topic of the Turkish minority in Bulgaria in the interwar period through the interpretive lens of the "linguistic" or better " alphabetic" fights,(1) placed in the context of the "Latinization" processes taking place in the wide Eurasian space, as well of the post-imperial sociopolitical dynamics.(2)To this aim, I describe the interesting and little known case of the writing practices of the Turkish community in Bulgaria in the period between the two world wars. In particular, I take into account the repercussions of Atatiirk's alphabetical reform in Bulgaria, demonstrating how the adoption of the Latin alphabet in Turkey represented a significant challenge for the country, triggering the fears of both the Bulgarian authorities and of the more conservative factions of the local Turkish community. In this context, I analyze the attitudes towards the Arabic and the Latin alphabet employed to write the Turkish language in the Balkan country, illustrating the reasons for the prohibition of the Turkish Latin alphabet, in an unprecedented combination of interests between Bulgarian authorities and Islamic religious leaders. I will try to show how in that specific historical moment, writing systems, far from being "neutral" communication elements, lent themselves to various manipulations of an ideological and political nature. My paper does not intend to represent a comprehensive contribution to the analysis of the complex subject of this community's religious or political identity, but it rather aims to shed light on the limitations faced by the Turks of Bulgaria in terms of their linguistic rights in a period when other communities in Southeast Europe were encountering similar difficulties.(3)

; The Russian modern political system took its origin as the consequence of the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. According to the Constitution adopted in 1993, the new state was announced as democratic. The elections as one of the main criteria of democratic regime have also been periodically taking place. However, they have been resulting in the victory of the same person – Vladimir Putin (and once, of his successor Dmitri Medvedev). Basic socio-economic indicators have been moderately improving in Russia since Putin became president. However, as reported by such international nongovernmental organization as Human Rights Watch there have also been violations of human rights and political freedoms. Therefore, the fact that despite all violations majority of people still express their support for Vladimir Putin, attracts attention. Freedom House and The Economist Intelligence Unit annually publish democracy indexes, which measure the state of the democracy of almost 170 countries; and according to them, Russia is considered as an authoritarian country. However, opposed to this opinion such authors as J. Colton, E. Hale, Ekman, Levitsky, A. Way, Merkel consider Russia as the hybrid regime, which represents genuine example of the combination of the elements of both democratic and authoritarian regimes. This thesis study's analysis of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe's elections reports, Russian legal texts and Russian survey reports has also led to the confirmation of this view: the regime in Russia should be referred to the hybrid, not authoritarian. And the main criteria within hybrid regime that leads to such a massive support for Putin lies in the manipulation of the public opinion through the media channels.

; Institutionalizing the fight against state-sponsored terrorism (foreign terrorism) by governments as a matter of internal security can result in significant social costs within national borders. States may be more likely to support terrorism when the social costs have dire consequences. Furthermore, the anarchic nature of the international system can facilitate this support. The fact that the "social cost" in this cycle shaped by the cause-effect relationship draws attention in the internal security administrations is a requirement of the effective counterterrorism. The approaches that do not actually contribute to the counterterrorism and that diversify or deepen existing problems can be questioned in this way. While counterterrorism continues with artificial methods under the influence of manipulation, awareness that some states may be involved in initiatives that support the creation of social costs can also be able to develop more in this way. Because of these possible gains, the "social cost" should be recognized as an important issue in the counterterrorism. In this respect, the aim of this study is to produce results that can encourage governments to structure the internal security administrations employed against state-sponsored foreign terrorism within the framework of approaches that take into account the social costs of combating this type of terrorism. In the study, which will be based on the literature research, the social costs of the counterterrorism will be examined through five concepts: "fear of terrorism", "violations of rights and freedoms", "production of internal enemies", "loss of legitimacy" and "democratic backsliding". It will be present suggestions to the governments on the result of the examinations on the theoretical basis. It is thought that the study may contain value for the nation-states with cultural diversity, especially for the countering foreign terrorism. It is also considered that the study can shed light on both keeping the legitimate violence used by states under control so that it does not produce unjust results against the society, and countering new forms of terrorism, which cannot be predicted to come to an end.

; Public opinion research as a means of political communication reappears every election period and for serving different purposes that by politicians and media. Platon'un "Sokrates'in Savunması" ve "Gorgias", Aristoteles'in ise "Retorik" adlı eserlerinde siyasal iletişimden izler bulmak mümkündür. ABSTRACTANALYSIS OF THE PRESS IN TERMS OF POLITICAL COMMUNICATION DURING 2011 GENERAL ELECTIONSPolitical communication, which arises out of the crossroads of politics and communication disciplines, does not exist just theoretically in our lives. Such that, every means of mass communication that surrounds our environment carry political communication messages at any moment by reflecting these messages using different wordings at the same time. Press is one of the most effective means of mass communication from past to present. Because of this reason, not only in the election periods, but also during non-election periods, newspapers have an important role in terms of political communication. Even though political communication started to gain popularity towards the end of the 20th century, it's been in existence since Ancient Greeks. It's possible to find the traces of political communication in Platon's works, "Sokrates's Defence" and "Gorgias" and, Aristoteles's work "Rhetoric". Especially rhetoric (persuasive use of the language) is one of the basic elements of the political communication techniques. In time, the developing political and communication systems has broadened the influence area of the term. Almost all the components of marketing came together under the name of "political communication management" and ramify in to the branches like political advertisement, political propaganda and political marketing. Mainly, by the development of communication technologies in the United States, the importance of political communication has increased and long-term strategical plans (including non-election period) has started. At this point, various theories and models have started to be produced as a sample for the long/short term effects of the means of mass communication on the society. One of these theories which concerns political communication is Agenda Setting. According to this model, the media do not determine "what we are going to talk" but "about what we are going to talk". In other words, it redirects us. Thereby, the power that press has is seen as a mean of manipulation by the political party leaders. This situation directly takes press and politics in to the subject. Throughout the history of the press, politics and power relations were always on the agenda. Especially in the history of Turkish press, the censorship, banned magazines and newspapers, the journalists who were sentenced reveal the size of these relationships. Certainly, the emergence of first newspapers by the hand of state, the incentives provided by the governments, the conglomeration in the press immediately afterwards, and the changing understanding in the journalism all have had an impact on the relationships which reached this perplexed state, too. Eventually, the changing understanding in the journalism has brought the problem of "commoditization in the news", as well. Besides, the conflicts between the press and politics have affected the language of the news; the elements like objectivity and balance in the news have clearly begun to be ignored. Because of all these reasons, how the political communication process of the leaders and parties were presented and reflected during 2011 general elections in Turkey is analyzed. Between May 1 and June 12, the election studies of political parties in the news of the daily national newspapers Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet and Zaman is analyzed by using the model of critical discourse analysis. In the first chapter of this study, the History, Elements and Development of Political Communication in Turkey were discussed, beside the concepts of Politics, Communication and Political Communication. In the second chapter, Relationship between Press and Political Communication, Place of the Press in Political Communication, Political Communication and Journalism Ethics are studied. In the third section, slogans, advertisements, election promises and promotional activities of the parties in the process of 2011 general elections are widely examined. Finally in the fourth chapter, selected newspapers were analyzed through Critical Discourse Analysis Model.
