Czechoslovakia was subject to authoritarian rule of the Communist Party since 1948 and any research had to comply with Marxism-Leninism as the sole acceptable scientific method. Czech art history (as different form art criticism) lacked any experience with Marxism. Around and after 1950, there continued the quest for a method that would be both compatible with the scholarly tradition following the Vienna School and acceptable to the ideologues of the political regime. Jaromír Neumann found the best result in his invention of "formalist iconology" around 1960: a strange hybrid of Panofsky's post-war iconology and the late Dvořák's "spiritual art history" has served Czech art history well until today.
; The investigation concerns itself with the structuralist Marxism developed in the 1960"s, which had a similar status in France to that of the "Frankfurter Schule" in Germany, above all thanks to the work by Althusser, Balibar and Poulantzas. In the first part of the dissertation, Althusser"s methodological concepts are presented. In the Marxist discourse, they represent a considerable incision, as Althusser attempts to deconstruct central theses of "classical" Marxism (in particular the Hegel-marked Marxism à la G. Lukács). In this, Althusser negates above all an emphasised importance of the working class within the sense of the subject and object of development of history and attempts to develop a Marxist interpretation of history not based on a philosophical foundation. Althusser"s subsequent ideology and subject concept is to be classified as a landmark in Marxist theory: ideology is not examined as "blindness", but as a social form of practice. In this way, Althusser manages both to find a connection to discourse-theoretical approaches and also to identify state institutions in which the ideological reproduction of society is organised and thus the hegemony of a class is reproduced. After this, the state-theory work of Poulantzas is presented, which - on the basis of Althusser"s epistemology and ideological theory, the work on political theory by Gramsci and Foucault"s analyses - achieves a concept of a state considerably extended in comparison with traditional Marxist analyses: in this perspective, the state is not only analysed as a repressive apparatus, but ideological and economical functions of the state which are understood as being necessarily part of the state with a view to the reproduction of the bourgeois society are also examined. After this, Poulantzas creates the term of "authoritarian statehood", thus trying to analyse the Western European state forms in the 1970"s. In this, Poulantzas comes to the conclusion that considerable transformations have taken place in the states of Western Europe, in particular with regard to the importance of parties and administration, the tendency of which is to undermine the democratic formation of a bourgeois state.
After positioning the topic in a historical framework, sketching the main paradigm in discussion, the article concentrates on three main areas: 1) the challenge of discussing subjectivity within a marxist tradition which is mainly concentrated on the economic sphere; thus linking the possibility to change society to the necessity of changing oneself. 2) the challenge of criticizing Marx' concept of labour and value-theory and thus bringing domestic labour into the heart of marxism, and connecting the problem with the necessity of reorganizing 'work-society' today. 3) the challenge of linking the critique of political economy to patriarchy and thus doubting the usefulness of thinking domination in a one-dimensional way, and offering a new idea on the fundamental part women's oppression plays in capitalist society. The author summarizes the main discussions from the seventies up to now and links them to her own experiences and contributions in this field. As a feminist she transgresses the boundaries of academic disciplines and covers psychology, sociology, economy and politics. ; After positioning the topic in a historical framework, sketching the main paradigm in discussion, the article concentrates on three main areas: 1) the challenge of discussing subjectivity within a marxist tradition which is mainly concentrated on the economic sphere; thus linking the possibility to change society to the necessity of changing oneself. This article starts from the thesis that every "historiosophic system" is based on a certain set of features of a mentalite, on an ensemble of preconscious collective ideas about history and society. Thus, the philosophy of history of Marx and Engels has tobe conceived as a specific amalgam of the "traditional humanism" inherited from European Enlightenment and of a "revolutionary complex" resulting from a radicalization of the socio-economic contradictions during the 19th century in Western Europe, parallel to the economic and social developments in the 20th century, ,,traditional humanism" was succeeded by a "modern type humanism" - the former being characterized by a belief in the rationality of human nature, in progress and in the possibility of a planned realization of an ideal social order, the latter being based on a more individualistic and complex but also more pessimistic perception of the individual and the society. This has led to an increased distance of Western European intellectuals from Marxist philosophy ofhistory. In contrast to this, in post-revolutionary USSR the mentalite underlying Marxism was preserved and made to serve as an instrument for legitimizing the existing political system. This is the background of Koposov's analysis of the main methodological and thematic trends in Soviet historiography and its relation to the regime up to the present. ; This article starts from the thesis that every "historiosophic system" is based on a certain set of features of a mentalite, on an ensemble of preconscious collective ideas about history and society. ; The Marxist-Leninist penetration of university life was of particular importance in the GDR. In 1951, a basic course of study in social sciences was introduced which was binding for all students. This was later called the Marxist-Leninist Basic Course of Studies (MLG) and remained in existence until autumn 1989. Specially installed departments, institutes and sections were responsible for its realisation. The article examines the disappearance of these university teaching and propaganda departments in the course of the "Wende" (turnaround) using the example of the University of Jena. Despite the special local colouring, the main features are paradigmatic for comparable institutions in the GDR.
Marxism and the idea of 'progress' have been closely interrelated in the course of the last 150 years. I argue that this relation was, however, less clear-cut and one-dimensional than those reflected in critical appraisals hitherto of the notion of 'progress' in Marx and the many sorts of Marxism. After some reflections on the possibility of historicizing Marxism in the aftermath of '1989', the paper goes on to present some elements of the multi-faceted approach to 'progress' in the thought of Karl Marx himself, including some remarks on related topics (e. g. his interpretation of non-European regions). The genesis of Marxism – defined as any intellectual and political practice with reference to Marx – and the different attitudes of Marxist intellectuals towards 'progress' are then discussed. In contrast with the standard vision, in which 'Marxism' is depicted as being irremediably interlaced with a teleological concept of history, the narratives of 'progress' and Eurocentric distortions, this article demonstrates how different conjunctures of Marxist thought led to diverse ways of using the concept of 'progress'. ; Marxism and the idea of 'progress' have been closely interrelated in the course of the last 150 years. The economic as well as political and ideological crises and transformations of capitalist social formations have created a crisis for Marxist approaches. This affects their assumption about the necessity, desirability and possibility of social transformation, but also about the actors fighting them out and their activities. Thus, a far reaching reformulation of its fundamental epistemological and theoretical assumptions is necessary. This contribution argues that the crisis of Marxism demands a self-reflective engagement with conditions of Marxist theoretical work. The acknowledgement of the fundamental openness and incompleteness of Marxist social critique as well as its contested production is indispensable to avoid authoritarian forms of politics and to be implicated into the legitimation of domination again. The encompassing character of the crisis tendencies of capitalist social formations and the multiplication of fields of conflict demands to overcome a monistic interpretation of social dynamics. To conceptualise capitalist social formations as relation of relations is an indispensable precondition for the analysis of the connections between different social structures and relations of power and dominance. Furthermore, the ability of capitalist social formations to change, which has been shown by the recent crises and transformations, demands a fundamental dynamisation of the Marxist concept of reproduction. The dynamisation of relative surplus production in knowledge based capitalism moves the adaptability of the subjects and their capacity to work centre stage. Only against this background can the plurality of perspectives for emancipation and social struggles come into view for Marxist theoretical work. ; Refereed/Peer-reviewed ; (VLID)3479306 ; Version of record
; [eng] Three simple words "I am a Spaniolin" in the title of the present literary research work appoint to the fundamental belief of the Judeo-Spanish writer Veza Canetti. The profound dimensión of this confession is confirmed trhoughout the biographical, literary and historical research for this thesis. The central focus concentrates – within three concentric circles– on Veza Canetti's Judeo-Spanish identity including a vaste historical retrospection of the Golden Middle Ages for the Spanish Jews on the Iberic Peninsular, the consecuences of the expulsión of the Sephardim on 1492 in order to make comprehensible their adherence to the Spanish culture and language. Furtheron, the investigation of the fertile literary production of Jewish artists and writers like Veza (and Elias) Canetti during the Austromarxism in Red Viena til the take-over of the Nazis in 1938 and the consecuent Jewish exile in London is described in this thesis. In every concentric circle there are four relevant elements as a red line throughout this paper: 1) Judeo-Spanish as the language of private communication between the Canetti- couple, 2) the influence of their literary and artistic friends in Viena and in London, their exile 3) the German as a literary language for both Veza and Elias Canetti 4) An exhaustive work-analisis of those literary works which are directly related to the head-lines of each concentric circle, as the are the Jewish-Sephardic heritage, living with Jewish-Sephardic roots in Viena and last not least the Jewish exile period in London. The first concentric circle contains the most important part of this thesis: the Sephardic heritage with a wide historic background and analisis of Veza Canettis Spanish works Der Seher and Pastora. The second concentric circle contains the Viena-period. The literary value of the letters is as well contemplated within the third and last concentric circle, as letters are the expression of one's own identity of Sephardic elements which are always present in Veza Canetti's letters to her brother-in-law Georges and friends and editors. Three tables of Veza Canetti's Works, numerous documents, photographs and letters out of different legacies, as well as two reports of conversations and visits, to be found in the Annex, complete the new results of this literary research thesis about Veza Canetti's Judeo-Spanish roots.

The VII. Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam was held in June 1991 in Hanoi. The reports and programmes published reflect the difficulties of renewal in the political sphere in Vietnam. The difficult economic situation compelled the political leaders to allow extensive reforms. But there has been no liberalisation of political and ideological thinking so far. The reasons therefore do not lie only in the communist ideology. Nationalism, Confucianism and metaphysically interpreted Marxism are essential components of Vietnamese political culture. This is important for the theory and methodology. Large socio-cultural differences between East Asian and West European (Northamerican) intellectual history are obvious.
