Today, young people write in their leisure time far more than they did 15 years ago. Most often they use the new media to do their writing. This book explores whether the frequent writing of short messages and e-mails and participation in chats and social networks like Facebook have an influence on writing in school. Are there any similarities and relationships between the texts written in school and the private texts? For the first time, based on comprehensive data from Swiss students, this book provides empirical answers to these questions

This article reports a secondary analysis comparing media role perceptions among journalists in China, Taiwan, and the United States, based on three recent nationwide surveys in these societies. By comparing the goodness-of-fit of a series of loglinear models, we have found that the societal factor has the strongest impact on journalists' views about media roles, the organizational factor has a significant but weak impact, and the individual factor has virtually no impact. Within the societal factor, we have further contrasted two competing models: political determinism vs. cultural determinism. The study provides clear-cut evidence in favor of the former.

This presentation is based on the necessity for developing audiovisual democracy and for proposing specific practices for the deactivation of media persuasive elements as its consequence. It is known that the study and visibility of the main cognitive and emotive strategies of audiovisual persuasion allow minimization of their effects and a more balanced and independent interpretation. Without a specific training, a critical consciousness against media persuasion may only appear in a long term, may appear partially or even never appear. Literacy must have a space in the very same media with programming time devoted to that aim, incorporating certain proposed contents
We examine the role of issue definition in disability policy change. Based on qualitative & quantitative evidence from media coverage & congressional hearings, we conclude that policy change was influenced by the redefinition of disability issues from medical & economic definitions to a new sociopolitical perspective. Specifically, we find evidence that media attention & tone influenced the number of congressional hearings & the tone of these hearings. The change in the congressional definition subsequently contributed to the passage of key legislation based on the sociopolitical/civil rights definition of disability. Importantly, our research supports previous studies that suggest problem definition helps to explain significant policy change. 2 Tables, 2 Figures, 1 Appendix, 39 References. Examines the role of the collectivist African tradition, reinforced by President Julius K. Nyerere's formal adoption of a communitarian organization of society and a socialist press, in determining journalists' attitude toward the private and government owned media.

Answers were sought to the following questions: (1) 'Can the public be made aware of major sci'ific news events rapidly?' The proportion lacking knowledge of earth satellites declined from 54% prior to Sputnik I to less than 10% within a month after the event indicating the possibility of a rapid spread of sci news under favorable circum stances. (2) 'To what extent are the events perceived in a sci'ific frame of reference?' A Coll educ & Coll or Hsch courses in sci are almost a prerequisite for understanding space events (satellites) in a sci'ific context & even the Coll audience lacks a clear conception of sci'ific procedures. (3) 'What are the effects of major sci'ific news events on general att's about sci & sci'ts?' The majority of the public possesses favorable though overly simplified ideas about sci & sci'ts likely to be changed little by news of satellite launchings (4) 'What are the consequences of major sci'ific news events for patterns of media consumption?' Over-all patterns of media use are unlikely to be affected by a sci'ific event esp when its personal relevance is unclear. (5) 'What are the soc characteristics related to sci'ific awareness, understanding & interest?' Men were more interested in & had a greater under standing of satellites than women; educ & income were highly related to satellite information. (6) 'Does the extent of media consumption influence a person's level of sci'ific information?' Extent of understanding of sci' ific purpose of satellite launchings was strongly related to the number of media used even when educ was controlled. 'Both educ & number of media used appear to be strong & independent predictors of satellite information.' C. M. Coughenour.

This article uses the mass-media career of the British psychiatrist David Stafford-Clark (1916-1999) as a case study in the exercise of cultural authority by celebrity medical professionals in post-war Britain. Stafford-Clark rose to prominence in the mass media, particularly through his presenting work on medical and related topics for BBC TV and Radio, and was in the vanguard of psychiatrists and physicians who eroded professional edicts on anonymity. At the height of his career, he traded upon his celebrity status, and consequent cultural authority, to deliver mass media sermons on a variety of social, cultural, and political topics. Stafford-Clark tried to preserve his sense of personal and intellectual integrity by clinging to a belief that his authority in the public sphere was ultimately to be vindicated by his literary, intellectual, and spiritual significance. But as his credibility dwindled, he came to distrust the cultural intermediaries, such as broadcasters and publishers, who had supported him.
