; Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in north east Germany has many castles, great houses and public buildings which show a wider variety of architectural styles, from the early modern era to WWII, than anywhere else. These historic buildings – castles, manor houses and state property houses – were well maintained until the reunification of Germany in 1990 but many have since fallen into vacancy and dilapidation. Little has been done to protect this unique architectural heritage for future generations. Greater awareness of the historical importance of the buildings is needed to ensure they are preserved as an important part of the regional cultural identity. This research aims to reveal for the first time the historic and architectural context of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's most important buildings, specifically in relation to the former Grand Duchy Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The research focuses on important buildings constructed between 1780 and 1920 in the Ludwigslust and Amt Neuhaus areas, which form the center for modern architecture in Mecklenburg and Pommerania. Firstly, the topography of each building is analysed and compared with the contemporary architecture of the time. This reveals six distinct categories of architectural development between 1700 and 1939/43. In the next step, the construction of each building is ordered according to the appropriate category. This enables innovative approaches to be identified so that the building can take its rightful place in architectural history. A particularly interesting example considered in the research is the neo-gothic manor house Gresse, near to the city of Boizenburg at Elbe. The work is supported by two volumes of evidence – analogue the anthropological model of VASARI: The volumes include historical photos, paintings and drawings showing original architectural features of the buildings and detailing national and international influences. They also include the studies of individual architects. The architects are categorized in clusters according to their favored style of architecture. This is supported by lists of references from the Ludwigslust, Amt Neuhaus and other regions. The first part documents those architects who designed buildings which were not categorized to an architectural trend-line. The second part includes those architects whose work was trend-setting in the Ludwigslust and Amt Neuhaus areas to the Grand Duchy and who were leaders of the six architectural categories. Based on the latest scientific findings, biographies have been compiled for more over 70 architects. The biographies go beyond personal details such as family, schools and teachers to include other major influences such as their multiple-cultural practice gained through international travel. By cross-referencing this information with the study of the buildings this research is able to further enhance our understanding of architectural development in the region. Furthermore, the research finds evidence to link buildings, for which the identity of architect was previously unknown, with renowned architects of the time. Some of the buildings in both public and private ownership have been left to decay and demolition. The discovery that they were built by leading architects presents a powerful case for their preservation as important cultural assets. The research will also help to challenge incorrect assumptions about the buildings in the future and help to ensure that any restoration work is consistent with the original design. Through the study of examples such as the manor house Benz: RAMÉE was able to construct it in the American Colonial Style. The manor house shows how restoration and modification should be undertaken, the research recommends measures including: that the official monument service should be able to prevent demolition; that the departments of building inspection should be able to consult the owners of monuments; that government should create strategies to preserve the cultural inheritance for the future generation; and that cultural and educational policy be re-designed urgently. To achieve these aims private foundations must work together to save the cultural identity of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Many post-industrial regions reinterpret their industrial past as a heritage resource for marketing purposes. This paper explores how two sites in the Ruhr area in Germany, Zollverein and Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, are narrated in marketing brochures with selective industrial heritage narratives. Industrial heritage is utilized for both immediate marketing purposes and as a tool for memory and identity politics. Through thematic analysis, we uncover that industrial heritage legitimizes the Ruhr–Europe's largest post-industrial region–as a distinct region by providing a seemingly uncontested, neutral and universal industrial history targeted at a wide audience. Simultaneously, the established narratives reinterpret industrial heritage as places of consumption, valued for their aesthetics and facilities for sports, arts and leisure. Such a marketing practice attempts to tap into the growing demand for postmodern consumption of culture, and simultaneously justifies and institutionalizes a specific, consumption-driven post-industrial development strategy for the Ruhr. The study reveals how the marketing of a post-industrial region promotes a select set of industrial heritage narratives that aim to strengthen the region's economic position in a neoliberal setting of interregional economic competition.

On September 25, 2017, Germany awoke to the horrifying reality that the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a far-right party founded in 2013, had romped to third place in the previous day's federal election. With 12.6% of the vote, the party became not only the official face of the opposition to Angela Merkel's not-so-grand coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPD), but also the first far-right party to enter the Bundestag since the 1950s. Election watchers soon noticed that the AfD had racked up stunning margins in the states that once made up the German Democratic Republic (GDR), coming in first on the second ballot (Zweitstimme) in Saxony and second in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. That the AfD, a racist and xenophobic party that campaigns against European integration and immigration, should do so well in once-socialist states bespoke East Germany's strange resonances in German culture and memory nearly thirty years after its dissolution.

; The development of the Jewish minority\'s legal position poses a major problem in the emergence of modern society. The structurally backward region of Mecklenburg provides an impressive example of how the inclusion of a non-Christian population group was both long-winded and fraught with inconsistencies, as the leading noble elites harbored a religious self-image of their state and socieity. Yet the territorial legislation did open chances for a lasting emancipation of the Jews on at least two occasions - 1813 and 1849 - when it brought the Grand-Duchy into the avant-garde of emancipaton policies in Germany. Sharp rifts, however, turned Mecklenburg into a prime example of the ups and downs in the Jewish emancipation process. As this study shows, the traditional Christian anti-Judaism probably played a major role in Protestant Mecklenburg; at the same time, resistance against emancipating the Jews was mainly found where conservative elites in the estates system were unwilling to give up their special status in favour of a structurally open society. The present study can draw on a large number of Jewish ego-documents, allowing for biographical sketches and complex insights into the changing self-images of Jews in Mecklenburg. They reveal that the leading strata of Jewish society were actively engaged in the process towards legal equality.

; The challenges in rural areas in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern raise the question of how to find appropriate policy interventions specifically in transition countries. One approach to move rural development forward is LEADER. LEADER is a bottom-up participatory approach that uses regional budgets to fund projects. There is a long history of LEADER-implementation. Especially in the current funding period a limited bottom- up participation and a lack of innovation are prevalent. To discuss the question of appropriate policy interventions, experiences in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and a comparison with LEADER-experiences in western Germany will be examined. Therefore, the findings of the evaluation of Rural Development Programs (RDPs) in seven federal states in Germany are used. Overall, the results show that the LEADER approach is working in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Historical patterns are visible in some areas: for example, in differences in participation structures (fewer working groups, but a higher proportion of female LAG-members than in western Germany). However, the problems for funding innovative projects were common, and the shortcomings are clearly not only a problem in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. To use the original and intended strengths of the LEADER approach, a more flexible funding structure, which is oriented on the region's own goals, is recommended.
