In den letzten Jahrzehnten ist man zunehmend darauf aufmerksam geworden, dass Ästhetik als Lehre von der Wahrnehmung ihre medialen Bedingungen mit bedenken muss. Demgegenüber lässt sich aber auch eine Haltung einnehmen, die versucht, ästhetische Phänomene als emergente Sinnformen zu analysieren, ohne sie auf ihre medientechnischen Voraussetzungen zurückzuführen. Unter den in diesem Band versammelten medien-, literatur- und theaterwissenschaftlichen Beiträgen finden sich beiderlei Perspektiven wieder, wobei verschiedene Autorinnen und Autoren den Schwerpunkt auf die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk Walter Benjamins legen. So spiegelt das Buch, der Anlage einer Festschrift entsprechend, die facettenreichen Forschungsinteressen Burkhardt Lindners wider.

The thesis of the chapter is that young people's cultural production offers an understudied inroad to understanding the dilemmas facing modern youth. The thesis is verified through analysis based on a three-year media ethnography on 14-17-year old Danes' video making practices. Main findings document that cultural production is a particular means of political expression and not an alternative to political activism.

This special volume of "Studies in Law, Politics, and Society - The Aesthetics of Law and Culture: Texts, Images, Screens" - examines practices of representation and their relation to juridical and cultural formations. The chapters range across the media of speech and writing, word and image, legislation and judgment, literature, cinema and photography. The contributions draw on disciplines including jurisprudence, literary criticism, philosophy, cinema studies, art and visual studies, cartography, historiography and medicine. They are ordered according to four prominent themes in contemporary, theoretically informed critical scholarship: Crime Scenes: Sexuality and Representation; Sites Unsaid: Testimony, Image, Genre; (Post) Colonial Appropriations; and Screen Culture: Sovereignty, Cinema and Law.

This refreshingly different introduction to media studies offers an understanding of the mass media which is critical but which does not deny the pleasures they offer. Reflecting the trends of today's media and cultural studies courses, it introduces students both to social scientific approaches and those of the humanities and aesthetics.

A combination of participant-observation, survey research, interviews, and semiotics was used to examine risk-taking in Australian surfing. It is argued that: (1) aestheticization facilitates risk-taking in the pursuit of an ecstatic, transcendent experience; and (2) the surfing aesthetic involves a postmodern incarnation of the sublime that distorts rational risk assessment. The study also analyzes the role of the surfing media in constructing and reinforcing images of the sublime.

This ethnographic-style article chronicles the author's experiences teaching fourth-grade students media literacy. The 4-day lesson plan combined persuasive techniques articulated by Aristotle and media aesthetics as well as the creation of a "television commercial" to enable the students to become more critical media consumers and gain better media literacy skills. The four lessons emphasize the importance of adapting to audiences and remind readers that teaching is a two-way process.
