Popular newspapers like the British »The Sun« and the German »Bild« regularly invite controversy over their morals and methods, power and responsibility, political and social impact. At best, their reporting is rejected as trivial, vulgar and tasteless; at worst, it is deemed hazardous to the workings of democratic society. Yet, the papers are able to attract large audiences, and contribute significantly to the daily lives of millions of readers. This book looks at popular newspapers from an audience point of view. Examining the crucial relationship between news and entertainment, it provides timely empirical evidence for the values tabloids really have for readers and modern day Britain and Germany. Eine der zentralen Debatten der Cultural Studies beschäftigt sich mit dem Zusammenspiel von Medien und Identität. Die vorliegende Aufsatzsammlung liefert hier einen neuen Ansatzpunkt, indem ihre Beiträge Medien als Konstrukteure von Identitätsräumen verstehen. Unter dieser Perspektive werden folgende Themen behandelt: Welche »spaces of identity« ergeben sich aufgrund der medientechnologischen Entwicklungen? Kommt es zu einem Wiederaufleben nationaler Identitätsräume? Werden transnationale bzw. translokale Verortungen sichtbar? Gaming has never been disconnected from reality. When we engage with ever more lavish virtual worlds, something happens to us. The game imposes itself on us and influences how we feel about it, the world, and ourselves. How do games accomplish this and to what end? The contributors explore the video game as an atmospheric medium of hitherto unimagined potential. Is the medium too powerful, too influential? A danger to our mental health or an ally through even the darkest of times? This volume compiles papers from the Young Academics Workshop at the Clash of Realities conferences of 2019 and 2020 to provide answers to these questions.

The recent surge in global environmental justice movements has been accompanied and often leveraged by a resurgence of movements for Indigenous peoples' justice. As these interconnected and mutually reinforcing movements have grown in parallel, they have also become more visible through dynamic "movement cultures" – cultural expressions that are born of the aforementioned movements. These cultural demonstrations of the struggles for environmental and Indigenous peoples' justice stretch far beyond neatly printed posters and photographs, extending into mass collective walks, radical re-workings of cartography, the reclamation of names and places previously snatched up by colonialism, and aesthetic objects that resist co-optation through their continued connections to peoples, territories, and everyday life. Through the analysis of a variety of media – from grassroots drone video, to political printmaking and performative protest – this project puts forward the notion of decolonial worlding as an umbrella term to describe the myriad acts of creative resistance that emerge in generative opposition to colonialism, capitalism, and extractivism. These acts are united in their diversely expressed commitment to an actual postcolonial future. Drawing upon the methods of visual culture studies, with a commitment to decolonial and feminist approaches, The Aesthetics of Decolonial Worlding unites diverse decolonial projects through rigorous examination of what these activists and artists are resisting, as well as the futures they envision. The projects and actions explored seek to crack open and undermine past frames of hegemonic perception by inserting visions of subjectivity, nationhood, and sovereignty that are not necessarily new, but have been forcibly oppressed through colonial regimes of representation, state oppression, and biopolitical control. While some of these decolonial interventions may seem limited to the spheres of ephemeral protest actions or temporary art exhibitions, they also begin to simultaneously build and remember other worlds. They articulate an alternative visual narrative that seeks to overturn histories of colonialism and reveal counter-visualities of creative decolonial resistance. This project ultimately shows that these visual manifestations of environmental justice and self-determination comprise a collective aesthetics of decolonial worlding, and that turning our attention toward such actions may lead to a more just material reality across Turtle Island.

Thomas Waitz zeigt, aus welchen Gründen und auf welche Weise dies geschieht und wie sich dabei das Selbstverständnis und die Vorlieben jener, von denen diese Reflexion ausgeht - nämlich Intellektuelle - strukturell einschreiben. Seine Studie identifiziert eine Reihe spezifischer Repräsentationspolitiken des Verkehrs und zeigt, dass dessen Verräumlichungen stets von einem unhintergehbaren Eigensinn des Verkehrs bestimmt sind.

Unter den Begriff Massenmedium fasst man gemeinhin Mittel zur Adressierung eines unbegrenzten Empfängerkreises. Diese Definition vergisst jedoch die Semantik der Masse, die in die Wortbildung eingeht und bis heute gesellschaftsweite Vorstellungen über die Funktionsweise von Massenmedien bestimmt. Dabei verweist der Masse-Begriff vor allem auf einen spezifischen Rezeptionsmodus. Das Buch untersucht, wie massenpsychologische Konzepte seit Gustave Le Bon das Wissen über Massenmedien und ihre Rezipienten konturieren. Ebenso zeigt es auf, welche Vorstellungen von Medien die Massentheorie bereithält.

Discusses tensions between the logics of politics & contemporary media, arguing that media pressure results in a politics that is increasingly staged. In contrast to politics, which is complex & involves interplay between numerous actors of varying size, the media favor selective amplification & simplification. Politics is pressured to synthesize its own & media logic by adopting theatrical logic. Nine models used in this process are elaborated: personification, mythical heroic conflict, drama, archetypal narrative, sociointegrative communication ritual, debate, circus, social-role drama, & symbolic action. What constitutes a data practice and how do contemporary digital media technologies reconfigure our understanding of practices in general? Autonomously acting media, distributed digital infrastructures, and sensor-based media environments challenge the conditions of accounting for data practices both theoretically and empirically. Which forms of cooperation are constituted in and by data practices? And how are human and nonhuman agencies distributed and interrelated in data-saturated environments? The volume collects theoretical, empirical, and historiographical contributions from a range of international scholars to shed light on the current shift from media to data practices.

'Piazza virtuale' by the group of artists known as Van Gogh TV was not only the biggest art project ever to appear on television, but from a contemporary point of view the project was also a forerunner of today's social media. The ground-breaking event that took place during the 100 days of documenta IX in 1992 was an early experiment with entirely user-created content. This is the first book-length study of this largely forgotten experiment: It documents the radicality of 'Piazza virtuale's' approach, the novel programme ideas and the technical innovations. It also allows, via QR codes, direct access to videos from the show, which until now have been inaccessible.

In its current digital, pictorial and viral ubiquity, architecture no longer has to be bodily present, but has a mediating role. As a medial hinge it folds different disciplines of media and art onto the realm of the everyday. Here, the idea of architectonics can be understood as the architectural implications of computer games in a broader sense to address the matter of architecture in game worlds as well as the architecture of computer games themselves.

This anthology bundles transdisciplinary approaches around the topics of space, architecture, perception of and worldbuilding in computer games and their media-specific properties. What do stories in games have in common with political narratives? This book identifies narrative strategies as mechanisms for meaning and manipulation in games and real life. It shows that the narrative mechanics so clearly identifiable in games are increasingly used (and abused) in politics and social life. They have »many faces«, displays and interfaces. They occur as texts, recipes, stories, dramas in three acts, movies, videos, tweets, journeys of heroes, but also as rewarding stories in games and as narratives in society – such as a career from rags to riches, the concept of modernity or market economy.
