In: Teorie sociologiche e trasformazioni sociali
The book addresses the theme of youth climate activism building on the experience of FridaysForFuture activists and analyzing both their social representations of climate change and their social media usage practices. It accounts for the results of a qualitative research carried out with(in) the Roman group of the movement, adopting a solidarity-based epistemic stance that invites reflections both on activism and research practices.
Drawing upon social representations theory, the authors analyze how the "Fridays" perceive climate change: as a socio-ecological crisis that comes from afar and has repercussions on the future, as something that affects everything and everyone; but also, as a generational problem whose environmental, social, and economic costs will be paid mainly by young people. On the other hand, guided by the literature on digital activism, the authors explore the way in which the activists inhabit social media: as constitutive environments of activism, where political and media practices define each other; but also, as environments that belong to young people and are characterized by age-specific communication styles.
The two experiences related to climate change and the political usages of social media influence each other, giving rise to an unprecedented youth movement for the climate that can tell us about the transformations currently undergoing digital, environmental, and youth activism.

The linguistic expression of "Brexit" in the British news media: A corpus-assisted analysis
This corpus-assisted analysis looks at the work of James R. Martin and Peter R.R. White for what concerns the appraisal theory which is the centre of this investigation. The aim of this study is to provide an answer of how news language is impacted by political discourse in the particular scenery of Brexit, that is by the various instruments journalists may adopt to create a piece of news and thus influence the reader. More specifically, to discover if attitudinal language is utilised in news language and which approaches are preferred by journalists. Moreover, the study provides a glossary to better understand Brexit.

Raccontare l'omofobia in Italia.

The present study investigates how Italian and German populist leaders use conceptual metaphors on their Facebook pages to describe the migration crisis that has hit their respective Countries. By means of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Critical Discourse Analysis, metaphors are examined as a means of representing migration in mass media. The aim is to analyse the creation of the different metaphoric representations in the reference languages as well as to ascertain possible intercultural differences or common argumentative patterns which might be identified in the media language of the two politicians. The research is based on a corpus of posts shared on Facebook from January 2017 to December 2018 by the Italian leader of "Lega Nord" Matteo Salvini and from the German leader of "Alternative für Deutschland" Jörg Meuthen. The contrastive analysis of metaphors representing migration and migrants in Salvini's and Metuthen's posts shows that migration is represented with negative conceptual potential through images transmitting anxiety, despair, threats to life. In addition, the results show how the Facebook posts reproduce a "distorted" perception of immigrants and, consequently, a state of insecurity and general panic.

Come possiamo classificare i diversi contenuti?

Notes on Populism
The series of notes gathered in this paper mirrors the complexity of populism: from the tendency to have a negative use of the concept to its semantic and rhetoric-communicative vagueness; from an undetermined historical-theoretical integration of the concept to a theoretical-practical, cultural and ideological differentiation (which invites us to discuss 'populisms' instead of 'populism'); from the problem of the classification of different forms of populism to the study of new expressions of it (which, prevalently, is an effect of the vast circulation and use of new social technologies); and from the opportunity to deepen fundamental mechanisms that are the bases in formation of the populist representational discourse, movement and active response to the necessity of a wide interdisciplinary work of research. By sketching hypothesis, collecting questions and indicating problematic cruxes, this paper tries to discuss the possible contribution of philosophy (which is prevalently identified with critical hermeneutics), and the ideal interdisciplinary set-up (which is essentially defined considering a possible connection between social psychology, sociology, political science, philosophy, communication theory and new media).

"Show you can make it" What are the profiles of students that do not drop out during Grades 12-13?
Nowadays, school failure is considered a priority in the European education policy agenda. While in average Europe dropout rate is 15.3%, in Italy it is 23.5% (OECD, 2010b) and it mostly involves immigrant and lower social class students. In spite of the official efforts, Italian high school system has failed in removing the obstacles to academic success for all students: within vocational courses the dropout rate is 100% higher than in other high schools. That means that certain students are predestined to reach lower school and job positions in the society. In this paper I describe the findings of an empirical research carried out during the school year 2009/2010 in three cities of North, North-West and South of Italy. The research is based on theoretical sampling typical of grounded theory method and involved six different high schools. From the findings emergethree types of students' resistance to dropout.
