The first empirical study of the often discussed role of COMM's in Ur riots. 499 black arrestees in the Detroit riot of 1967 were questioned about past viewing of riots on TV; violent acts predominated as well as high emotional involvement. During the riot, radio was first to announce the disturbance; 48% found out through interpersonal channels & broadcasting informed 26%. Those who heard by phone, radio or TV were more likely to tell another than those who heard from another person or were at the scene. Broadcasting is the most powerful source bringing the news into the community. The content of the message reported suggests the unjust nature of the precipitating incident is less important than diffusion of the message a riot has begun. Media serve cliff functions, with TV being more of an interUr than intraUr force in riots, contributing more to pre-riot build up of affect than to diffusion of knowledge of a riot within a city.

Sociology was the first social science to investigate communication empirically. A review is offered of sociological research into the mass media, which is often multidisciplinary in approach. Concepts important in this area are those of medium, communicator, content, & audience. Investigation of mass media action & influence leads to study of the functions of these institutions in society & culture. Recent trends in this field have led to dissatisfaction with the present position; without loss of accumulated knowledge, a shift is needed both toward interpretation of the past & concern for the evolution & future changes of society.
