French discovery and colonisation of medieval philosophy (1730-1850)André-François Boureau-Deslandes (1737), Joseph-Marie Degérando (1804, 1822-1823) and Victor Cousin (1828 onward) have produced the three first reconstructions of medieval philosophy within the context of French secularized historiography. During the Enlightenment, Boureau-Deslandes' endeavour distinguished itself through its critical approach and anti-clerical bent. Diachronism provides the ethnological dimension to the study of the "human spirit". The exoticism that cloaks medieval scholastics in wild barbarian garb is followed by Joseph-Marie Degérando's euphoric exoticism. The first form of medieval scholasticism, dating back to the viith c., portrays "civilisation"'s lethargic state revived by the mingling of peoples in the xith c. Finally, with Victor Cousin, the Middle Ages become French and "modern". The exotic trend gives way to the colonisation of the past. Two historiographical elements are of crucial importance within the slow induction of medieval philosophy into French history of philosophy : The Arabs and Abelard. The Arabs are the "other" to Latin or European scholasticism. Abelard is quite the opposite : he is the very heart of the French Middle Ages invented by philosophical historiography at the beginning of the xixth c. as national cultures and identities rose to prominence. This also traces the history of progressive institutionalisation. If Deslandes concerned himself with the high-brow society of his time, Cousin formulated a political and cultural programme for the French University. Significant reconfigurations of historiographical procedures accompany this migration of socio-institutional contexts.

"The book provides a collection of scientific papers which are dedicated to the memory of Burkhard Mojsisch. The collection includes highly qualified papers on ancient, medieval and early modern philosophy, and demonstrates the importance of the historical research of philosophy at the beginning of the 21st century and its current trends. It documents historical aspects of important philosophical discussions of contemporaneity (e.g. in the fields of intercultural philosophy and interdisciplinary philosophy, such as philosophy of neuroscience)"--
During the Middle Ages, the links of the Precieux Sang are the subject of numerous translations between the East and West and then throughout Europe. In many cases, the big ones play a major role. That finding must lead to the question of their interest in these leftovers from Christ. As we will see, these have a heavy political significance. ; International audience In the Middle Ages, Holy blood relics were frequently translated, first between the Orient and the West, later throughout Europe. Quite often the aristocracy played a major role in the process of translation. This observation prompts the question as to the nature of the aristocracy's interest in Christ's remains. As shall be discussed, at the time such remains were imbued with considerable political meaning. ; During the Middle Ages, the links of the Precieux Sang are the subject of numerous translations between the East and West and then throughout Europe. Bien souvent, les grands y jouent un rôle majeur. Ce constat doit conduire à s'interroger sur l'intérêt qu'ils portent à ces restes du Christ. Comme on le verra, ceux-ci revêtent une lourde signification politique.
The paper examines the relation of esotericism and oblique politics in the Byzantine philosopher Michael Psellos (11th century) on the basis of Eva De Vries' study of the letters that Psellos addressed to the statesman Leo Paraspondylos. Traditionally, the name of Psellos signifies a revival of Neoplatonism in medieval Constantinople according to researchers like Chr. Zervos in the beginning of 20th century. Contemporary researchers such as Anthony Kaldellis and Stratis Papaioannou point to a more organic than speculative theorization in Psellos' work while another contemporary scholar, Frederick Lauritzen, undertakes a synthesis of the two approaches. In any case, as this paper supports, it would be inadequate to consider the relation of esotericism to politics without referring to the evolution of the moral standards considered in a contextualized manner. ; The paper examines the relation of esotericism and oblique politics in the Byzantine philosopher Michael Psellos (11th century) on the basis of Eva De Vries' study of the letters that Psellos addressed to the statesman Leo Paraspondylos. any inductive method, starting from individual and practical to collective and abstract, raises the problem of complexity. This is all the more true in history as diachrony prevents the perception of social stratification in a fixed way. In order to distinguish between the different categories, it is essential to separate the description given by the medievals themselves from the description given by the mediators nowadays. On the one hand, clerks use fairly simple frames of a binary, tertiary or quaternary nature, but they have increased, from the 14th century, to numbers close to 100, whereas they offer more comprehensive socio-professional analyses. Historians who nowadays interpret these medieval taxinomies use sociological, symbolic or rhetoric grids, different angles of attack giving meaning to these medieval readings of social reality. On the other hand, the rankings of contemporary medivists are sometimes based on a single criterion: blood or political activity, for example, for nobility. To this end, a heterogeneous approach should be preferred, which multiply the viewpoints around the concept of status, and its corollary, rank and role. The eyes of others and social recognition determine social codes and markers, which some documents, such as literary sources or oral surveys at the end of the Middle Age, make it possible to understand. ; International audience ; any inductive method, starting from individual and practical to collective and abstract, raises the problem of complexity. This book proposes to evaluate the importance and signification of Pietro Pomponazzi in the philosophy of the Renaissance. It considers both its rooting in Medieval traditions and its innovative force. Besides contributions on Pomponazzi's De immortalitate animae (1516), its antecedens and the debates that arose, the volume contains contributions on other aspects of the philosophy of nature, or on liberty and fate, and one dedicated to the interpretation of Pomponazzi at the beginning of the twentieth century. So, the texts of Pomponazzi, and especially his treatise on the soul appear as frontier texts. Their study allows an evaluation of the transfer of some medieval thematics, especially of Aristotelian, Alexandrinian and Averroist noetics, in the intellectual context of Renaissance, inside a general reflection upon the anthropological and ethical meaning of the finitude, which is constitutive of human nature.
