A discussion of TELEVISION AND GROWING UP: THE IMPACT OF TELEVISED VIOLENCE, Report to the Surgeon General, US Public Health Service, Washington, DC: Gov Printing Office, 1972. This Report has stirred up considerable controversy; the make-up of the committee which issued it, its summary of the findings, & the res projects chosen for funding have all been subjects of dispute. Here, the history of the project as well as the 5 Vol's of studies that contributed to the final Report are reviewed. These 5 Vol's are examined one by one: I Media Content and Control; II Television and Social Learning; III - Television and Adolescent Aggressivenes s; IV - Television in Day-to-Day Life: Patterns of Use; & V - Television Effects: Further Explorations. The limitations of the conclusions that can be drawn are pointed out. The link between media violence & subsequent antisoc behavior in children was already well indicated before the project was undertaken. Only a part of the studies included actually add to documenting this link. Violence can never be eliminated from TV; it is part of life & part of art.
