ABSTRACTThirteen goal planning manual texts commonly used with care staff who work with people with mental handicaps were anslysed for their readability, human interest, and content. Their readability and human interest levels were variable, and often below those of reading materials commonly experienced by the general public. The content of the manuals is criticised for lack of real‐life practice opportunities for staff training in assessment and teaching skills, and also for the general lack of suggested procedures to monitor and maintain staff behaviour. Areas for future development of goal planning manuals are suggested. In particular, the need for empirical assessment of the effect of alternative manual formats is highlighted.

A growing stream of theory and research suggests that overlap in team member mental models (i.e. socially constructed theories about systems and their expected behavior) has a positive influence on team processes and outcomes. In this article we argue that for self- managing work teams (SMWTs), the content of those shared mental models is also important. We begin by reviewing theory on SMWT effectiveness to determine the content of effective teamwork mental models in SMWTs. These are proposed to include: (1) psychological ownership of team processes and outcomes; (2) a need for continuous learning; and (3) a need for heedful interrelating. We then conduct content analyses of four published longitudinal studies of SMWTs to uncover the opportunities and challenges to developing and sustaining these mental models in dynamic organizations. Results suggest these mental models flourish when organizational supports back up their existence. However, since mental models are fluid and adapt to explicit and implicit messages, they weaken if shifting priorities cause organizational support to wane. Finally, the implications of our findings are discussed.

Within Malawi, as in many other African countries, a variety of traditional and modern attributions exist regarding the cause of a person's mental disturbance, or their admission to a 'mental' hospital. It is argued that a good mental health service should consider the beliefs of the patients it seeks to serve. Consequently we studied 103 consecutive admissions to Zomba Mental Hospital in order to find out how patients explained their own admission to the hospital. Traditional attributions were the most common, followed by medical and then psychological attributions. Some patients explained their admission to the hospital by combining traditional, medical or psychological ideas. Content analysis of traditional attributions identified examples of "Tropical Tolerance" and the ''Pull Down" phenomenon. The possible interactive nature of traditional, medical and psycho logical processes is discussed and it is suggested that traditional healers should be incorporated into 'modern' Malawian mental health services.

Parent satisfaction with the behavior of persons providing mental health services to their children is an emerging area of interest. Parent satisfaction may provide clues to high attrition rates for mental health programs that serve children and families. The research reported here addresses some of the methodological difficulties in measuring parents'perceptions of mental health professionals. The development of a scale, the Helping Behavior Checklist, is described. The methodology included employment of a panel of expert judges to establish content validity and a field test in a sample of parents to examine reliability and discriminant validity. Pre liminary findings from a group of 202 parents contacted through parent support groups are presented.

Health care report cards have been endorsed as a mechanism for efficiently comparing key quanttfiable aspects of performance across a range of health systems or plans. There are challenges in determining what to measure; how to gather and analyze data; and how to report, interpret, and use findings. Mental health has received little attention, and a consumer perspec tive is typically not included. The proposed MHSIP mental health report card (MMHRC) addresses these concerns. General issues for report cards are discussed, and the MMHRC is described in terms of content, data sources and quality, and analysis and reporting.
