Introduction to Clinical Mental Health Counseling presents a broad overview of the field of clinical mental health and provides students with the knowledge and skills to successfully put theory into practice in real-world settings. Drawing from their experience as clinicians, authors Joshua C. Watson and Michael K. Schmit cover the foundations of clinical mental health counseling along with current issues, trends, and population-specific considerations. The text introduces students to emerging paradigms in the field such as mindfulness, behavioral medicine, neuroscience, recovery-oriented care, provider care, person-centered treatment planning, and holistic wellness, while emphasizing the importance of selecting evidence-based practices appropriate for specific clients, issues, and settings. Aligned with 2016 CACREP Standards and offering practical activities and case examples, the text will prepare future counselors for the realities of clinical practice.

Summary: This study explores the role of critical consciousness in mental health counseling. Oriented in large measure by Critical Theory, the study focuses mostly on non-traditional approaches to counseling. The primary methods used to generate data were interviews with two mental health counselors as well as qualitative content analysis of graduate and undergraduate psychology syllabi and Prilleltensky's book The Morals and Politics of Psychology: Psychological discourse and the status quo. The major themes that emerged from the case studies include seeing beyond the symptoms, a counseling style focused on clients' needs, and attunement to the risks of acting as experts. These resonate with the main components of the empowerment models of counseling that emphasize collaboration, prevention, multiculturalism, diversity, and social justice. These themes, which parallel critical pedagogy in educational arenas, involve therapists as co-learners as well as educators of their clients. Clinical pedagogies like these presuppose critical consciousness. Instead of viewing social problems as personal deficits, clinical pedagogies promote the creation of alternative perspectives as well as taking action to change social conditions. ; Ed.D. ; Department of Professional and Community Leadership ; Doctorate

Individuals seeking counseling might not recognize the interconnectedness of health, mental health, work, and life concerns. Counselors, however, need to be mindful that a person's wellness is interwoven with their work, life roles, and health. Research supports the interrelationship of career development and mental health as well as the effectiveness of an integrated approach to mental health and career counseling. An integrated approach from an ecological counseling perspective is proposed for conceptualizing client issues and intervention strategies.

Abstract
The present study investigated the influence of a school-based mental health counseling intervention (SBMHCI) on elementary school students' (N = 49) behavioral and emotional problems and school attendance at two Title I elementary schools. The study used a single-group, pretest–posttest design to examine change in the participants' scores after participating in the five-week SBMHCI. The results identified that participants' internalizing and total problem scores exhibited significant improvement over time, per parent report. In addition, participants' school attendance significantly improved over time, from the previous academic year, following the SBMHCI.
