This edited book is the third in a series of yearbooks that introduces the principles and applicability of the method of empathy-based stories. The book presents ten empirical studies which all use this method as a tool for data collection. In addition, the work examines the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories as a method and as part of qualitative research.
The research articles in the book provide a current overview of the change in different work and operating environments. These environments include various educational institutions from elementary school to universities, social media, and human resource management. Studies examine the social inclusion, participation and agency of pupils, students, young people, and professionals, as well as the professional and ethical challenges of those working in new environments. The method of empathy-based stories is used to observe, for example, university students' interpretations of involvement in the curriculum process, pupils' views on co-teaching, different forms of agency of young people who experience sexual harassment online, and the subjectivity of recruiters and the reasons for recruitment choices.
Methodologically, the book focuses on the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories and considers the characteristics of the method among qualitative research methods. Reflecting on the research articles, the work discusses what kind of requirements and challenges the method poses for both the researcher and the respondents. The book provides guidelines for evaluating the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories, while participating also in a general discussion of the reliability, potential, and limitations of qualitative research.
The book indicates how the method of empathy-based stories can be applied to a wide variety of research in different contexts. The strength of the method is its ability to utilize the respondents' imagination, thus providing the researchers with opportunities to find new perspectives and invent propositions. The book also provides practical examples of how the method can be used in research.
In: Kalevalaseuran vuosikirja
The theme and title of the 100th Yearbook of the Kalevala Society is "Paradigm". Paradigm is a framework of prevalent principles, beliefs, values, and norms, and incorporates ideas about what is correct in terms of theory and methodology. Accordingly, paradigm always leads to struggles of authority in relation to other trends and ways of thinking. This book grapples with the historical, contemporary, and ever-shifting paradigms and methods of cultural research. What was being researched in the early 20th century and how was the research conducted? What happened in the 1960s–1980s in this field of research? What methods do our peers use? What kinds of affiliations and antagonisms emerge with the changing paradigms? And how do the different 'turns' direct research?

This book deals with approaches, sources, and methods in health history from the middle ages to the twentieth century. Individual chapters demonstrate how historians of medicine and health choose their methodological approaches and form interpretations from primary sources. They discuss the practices of writing and show how obstacles in the research process can be overcome. Practical examples of source materials, used methods and research challenges give tools to students for carrying out projects independently and help them to understand different possibilities in the field of health history. In this book, history of health includes but is not limited to medical science. Emphasising medical pluralism, it places (public) health in a cultural and social field encompassing official and unofficial practitioners, medical institutions, and patients. Individual case studies highlight themes in Finnish, European, and African history.

The topic of the book is the incremental growth of linguistic knowledge from lexical to structural-cum-textual during the so-called later language development. Language mastery does not presuppose any acquaintance with prescriptive grammar but, instead, concerns the core of language which the so-called consensus principle applies to: the most frequent words and structures are mastered with certainty by everybody, but uncertainty increases as less frequent and more variable phenomena are taken into consideration. It is the goal of the study to make explicit the knowledge that is common to school children of different age groups, and to show how it develops both in its core and in its fringe areas. The mastery of less common aspects exhibits considerable statistical variation. The research embodies methodological pluralism insofar as it has been carried out by means both of the corpus method and the experimental method. Here experimental subsumes writing tasks, paper-and-pencil tests, and behavior under experimental conditions. The amount of participants native in Finnish varies from 300–2000. The book has a bipartite structure: mastery of meanings (Part I), and mastery of forms (Part II).

Discursive study of religion (DSR) has become an increasingly recognised and applied approach to the study of religion. It asks: What passes for 'religion' in society? How do different constructions of 'religion' affect other social spheres such as politics, law, and everyday life, and vice versa? In this collection, Finnish scholars—many of them internationally recognized authorities on the subject—discuss DSR's theoretical underpinnings, map the variety of discursive approaches, and apply the approach to case studies of politics, spirituality, and history. The book can be used as a textbook for religion and method courses in various disciplines.

Local educational stakeholders have a central role in organizing districtlevel curriculum development in Finland. Earlier research has shown that the implementation strategy affects the effectiveness of the reform. In Finland, an interactive topdownbottomup strategy requires local implementers to organize and manage districtlevel curriculum work. The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of the local curriculum process as experienced by the districtlevel stakeholders. Survey data (N = 550) were analyzed using mixed methods. The results showed that the topdownbottomup implementation strategy, including change management and knowledge sharing, was related to the perceived success of the reform. In addition, perceptions about the implementation strategy were related to the various ways of organizing the local curriculum process. Teachers' professional development and engagement in the process, facilitation of participation, management of the process and coherence making were identified as the key factors in the curriculum process by the stakeholders. ; Peer reviewed

The volume is a comprehensive handbook of oral history and memory studies in Finland. The Finnish research field has originally emerged at the collaborative intersection of history, folklore studies, and ethnology. Since then, this field has developed into vibrant multi- and cross-disciplinary arena characterized by a strong focus on methodological issues related to memory in culture and theoretical engagement with studies on narration and processes of remembering. The chapters of the book explore the perspectives on the production of memory-based knowledge in oral history interviews and collection campaigns of written reminiscences. Moreover, the book introduces versatile methodological approaches to the study of memory and memories, ranging from narrative to corpus analysis, and investigates the multiple media of remembrance from documentary film to museum exhibition. The chapters of the book also engage the field's disciplinary position and interrogate the potentials and challenges related to the application of the methods of oral history research and the use of memory-based knowledge beyond academia in political, societal, and community-based projects.
Destruktiivisesta ristiriidasta konstruktiiviseksi työyhteisösovittelun keinoin
In: http://lauda.ulapland.fi/handle/10024/60873
; Workplace mediation is a fresh and less studied part of mediation. The excellent results of crime and school mediation is encouragment to move towards this type of mediation in regards to workplace conflicts. As a counterbalance for the disadvantages of the competative society we live in, a balance of wellbeing, hope and trust among peers is needed. The purpose of this study is to describe how the model of workplace mediation is formed in a municipality workplace and how the people taking part in this mediation, experience it as a dispute resolution model. Workplace mediation is approached from the aspect of postmodern organization theory with qualitative research method. The empirical evidence for this study is collected from the discussions within guidance group meetings and also complemented with interviews from participants of the workplace mediation meetings. The collected evidence was analyzed by narrative and content analysis. The main result of this study is itself the model of the workplace mediation in municipal workplaces connecting it to the development of the organization theory from modern to postmodern diversity. The most encouraging result of the mediation is that the destructive conflict then turns into constructive dialogue with the help of the facilitative mediators present. Respecting listener can reinforce those voices the participants use to build their common reality. Workplace mediation is seen as a possible dispute resolution method within the workplace environment. The results of this study within the workplace wellbeing and results of the work can be approved. Further research would be beneficial in finding out if these same results can be achieved within other organizations. As well the possibility to make business of workplace mediation would be interesting.

Kertomus postmodernismin jälkeen

Narrative After Postmodernism takes a critical and practical look at the cultural theories of what comes after postmodernism or the postmodern. Alongside contemporary literary authors, the anthology studies diverse contemporary textual phenomena from TV shows to online fan theories and survivalist blogs. The essays compiled in this anthology tentatively apply the theories of the post-postmodern to contemporary texts to see how they might open up for analysis within their new theoretical frameworks or challenge them. The introduction, co-written by all the authors of this volume, introduces the most influential theories of post-postmodernism and contextualizes them within broader intellectual trends of the early 21st Century. The three essays comprising the first part of the volume discuss some of the theories of the postmodern in relation to contemporary works that seem to challenge them. Yet they also strive to clarify and sharpen some of the ideas proposed in the theories of the post-postmodern.The second part of the volume aims to show that it is not only the contemporary texts that move beyond the postmodern – the ways of reading literature and interpreting artworks in different media are also changing. The essays in the second part of the volume inquire about the effects of the contemporary literary culture on the methods of interpretation and ways of reading.
Mä lehden luin: Yleisön suhde painettuun ja digitaaliseen sanomalehteen
In the current digital media environment, legacy newspapers and their readers are often regarded as obsolete. For media executives and many journalists, the future of news is exclusively digital. Given the economic uncertainties facing the industry, news producers' eyes are focused on audience metrics and their capacity to shed light on readers' preferences.
This book sets out to analyse news reading from the perspective of the audience. Employing interviews as well as the so called obsläs method, it examines how readers of two Finnish regional newspapers, Hämeen Sanomat and Karjalainen, navigate in three distinct architectures of the newspaper: printed, digital replica and online news application. The assumption underlying the analysis is that each of these user interfaces favour somewhat differing reading protocols and routines.
The empirical analysis responds to the big question pondered by editors and publishers: Where are the readers? It appears that most of the participants of the study tended to move from one architecture to another depending on their contextual and situational needs. In this comparison, the strengths of a printed newspaper seemed evident for many, while the balance between the pros and cons of the digital environment was more mixed.
In addition to reporting the findings of the empirical audience study, this book evaluates the future of newspapers in the context of economic statistics and media policies. While the newspaper business in Finland struggles with increasing costs and volatility of income, it may well rely on the robust newspaper reading culture among the Finnish reading public.
Kokemuksia johtamisen simulaatiopelin pelaamisesta
Tutkittavina olivat 20 Lapin yliopiston eMBA-johtamisvalmennettavaa. Muotouttaminen on yksi vaihe johtamisidentiteetin kehittymisessä. Peli toimi mestarikisälli -mallisesti pelin ohjatessa ja opastaessa pelaajaa mahdollistaen hänelle turvallisen harjoitteluympäristön. Pelaajat nimesivät itselleen pelin lopussa ammatillisia kehittymisen tavoitteita kuvaten millaiseksi johtajaksi he haluavat kehittyä. ; Theme for this research is the use of simulation game in developing leadership skills. Research problem is What kind of experience is it for Executive MBA-students in Lapland's university to play Productive Leadership-game and what kind of results players achieve for their leader-ship development? The research examines the effect of Leadership Simulation game in the development of leadership skills. Experiences and game outcomes of Executive MBA students from Lapland University were used to measure the effectiveness in learning through Simulation Games. A target group of 20 students played the Simulation game for about 4 months and research material was collected from their learning diaries and group discussions. The objective of my study is to evaluate experiences of playing simulation game and assess how results affect the players' leadership skills. There is still lack of simulation games suitable for leadership development. Simulation has been found to be suitable for training leadership because it is almost impossible to learn complicated leadership structures through traditional training methods. The theoretical and methodological approach of this study is Phenomenological and hermeneutical, in other words gathering experiences and interpreting their significances. The study is based on experiential and practice-based learning theories. The target groups experiences of the Simulation game varied from despair and difficulties in the beginning to winning and finally to feeling in control of the game which eventually lead to success. When players played together in their own work community the game served as a simplified description of leadership practices, thus as tool for developing the organization's leadership. Playing helped to understand the supervisors' work. Players identified and were able to name a few development needs in their leadership skills after comparing themselves with what they applied based on the leadership theory and what they gained from using the Simulation learning method. The players carried out professional formation during the play, in other words repeated the game and found the cause-effect relationship between game theories and players' operations and actions in the game. The formation is an essential phase when developing a person's leadership identity. The game produced a master-apprenticeship-like environment by directing and guiding the players and giving them a safe practicing setting where a player can repeat actions as many times as needed without disrupting their real organization.
