I am honored to serve as editor for this special issue of Mobilization on innovative methods in social movements research. I was delighted when Rory McVeigh originally conceived of the idea of compiling manuscripts that employed cutting edge methods of collecting and analyzing data in order to advance contemporary social movement theory. I enjoyed the opportunity to review the wide variety of scholarly works I received for this issue. The six pieces included here represent the best submissions and emerging trends in the field. This article serves three purposes. (1) We present a new source of campaign finance data for the 50 states. This includes annual data on candidate expenditures in gubernatorial races from 1977 to 2001, as well as triennial & biennial data on campaign finance laws affecting gubernatorial races during this period. (2) We review the various sources of campaign finance data for the 50 states. (3) We examine the challenges of collecting & compiling data across the 50 states, since these data can vary so much in availability & measurement. We hope to provide some general lessons to researchers collecting or working with all types of cross-state data. 3 Tables, 9 References. Adapted from the source document.
