The Effect of Brexit on British Workers Living in the EU
The effect of Brexit is an important topic in the European and British political agendas. This study examines the perspective of the EU countries, with regards how British citizens working in an EU country reacted to the end of free movement of workers. Employing synthetic control methods and using data from Portugal, we estimate how the behaviour of UK citizens working in Portugal would have evolved if the Remain vote had won the referendum. Our results suggest that the Brexit referendum reduced the number of UK citizens working in Portugal, particularly in the case of non-university educated, male individuals with temporary employment contracts. This reduction is explained by the decrease in the number of incomers. We also find that those UK citizens who were already working in Portugal before Brexit are less likely to leave the country.

"I Remember When Donald Trump Was Elected. It Broke a lot of Refugees' Hearts": Refugee Perspectives on the Post-2016 U.S. Political Climate
Recent U.S. refugee policy and political rhetoric have sanctioned anti-refugee sentiment, fostering beliefs of refugees as other, threatening, or less than. Following the transition into the Trump administration, interviews with 88 refugees resettled long-term in the U.S. were conducted to examine the impact of the post-2016 political climate. Major themes included feelings of uncertainty regarding refugee status and stability, changes in perception of U.S. citizenship, and a sense of unwelcome. The harmful effects of political environments must be recognized in order to appropriately support refugee communities through social service programming and advocacy. Social workers can elevate refugee voices while working to improve resettlement services and enhance supportive social policy. Increased attention to refugee perspectives may facilitate understanding and decrease stigma moving forward in a new political era.

Code/Syntax: Home care allowance and labor market participation of immigrant and native-born mothers
Most countries still have a significant gender gap in labor force participation, and this gap is especially large for immigrants. Despite this gap, Germany introduced various forms of home care allowances in the last decade. Parallel to the extension of early child care and the inclu-sion of a legal claim for it, from 2013 to 2015, a nationwide home care allowance existed for parents who did not use public child care for children aged one or two years. After 2015, home care allowances continued to exist in several German federal states. Some politicians strongly criticized this transfer for allegedly decreasing work incentives, particularly for moth-ers with lower labor market integration, such as immigrant mothers. Using federal state differ-entiated data obtained from the German Socio-Economic Panel (doi: 10.5684/soep.v34), we investigate the impacts of a home care allowance on the labor market participation of mothers. For both native-born and especially immigrant mothers, the effects are significantly negative. We conclude that a home care allowance has negative effects on the labor force participation of mothers of young chil-dren, irrespective of the legal claim for and the extension of public child care.

Polexit durch die Hintertür. Polnische Regierungspolitik und europäische Themen
In: Polen-Analysen, Heft 285, S. 2-9
ISSN: 1863-9712

In: Polen-Analysen, Heft 282, S. 2-7
ISSN: 1863-9712

THE SUBSEQUENT CHALLENGES OF THE SLUM AND SQUATTER SETTLEMENTS: IN THE CITY OF ADDIS ABABA
The city of Addis Ababa has to experience a prevalent pace of real growth. This trend is somewhat influenced by the unrestrained development resulting from the evasion of informal settlements. As new buildings are implicit in the existing squatter settlements and vacant land, the number and scale of informal encampments in Addis Ababa has risen over time. However, to investigate the cause and impact of squatter settlements and their correlation in the Urbanization and health status of informal settlers, descriptive study design, and mixed-method that involves both qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed. The study revealed that the prevalence rate of squatter settlements in the town of Addis Ababa had been recorded due to the government personnel's inability to provide legal provision, the delay in implementing standard housing policies, and some other political prospects. Besides, the rapid pace of Urbanization and the enthusiastic emotion in gaining of quality of employment service aggravate the prevalence of informal settlements. Consequently, the study has shown that the deteriorated hazardous health risks of inhabitants in the slum areas resulted from poor sanitation and improper handling of poor solid waste management in the study areas. The mismatch between their enthusiastic desire and their livelihood in the slum and squatter settlements enables residents to experience depression, suicide, drug abuse, interpersonal violence, and too much alcohol consummation
