Im Oktober 1998 veranstaltete die Abteilung Mikrodaten von ZUMA die Konferenz ""Forschung mit dem Mikrozensus: Analysen zur Sozialstruktur und zum Arbeitsmarkt"", an der vorwiegend Nutzer des Mikrozensus teilahmen. Hauptziel dieser ersten Nutzerkonferenz war es, ein Forum für den Informationsaustausch zwischen den Datennutzern und den statistischen Ämtern zu schaffen. Die mehr als 20 Vorträge gingen deutlich über die von den statistischen Ämtern veröffentlichten Standardergebnisse zum Mikrozensus hinaus und sind weitgehend in diesem Band 6 der ZUMA-Nachrichten Spezial abgedruckt.

Die Bildungsreformen der sechziger Jahre sollten das Bildungsniveau der Westdeutschen anheben. Die Analyse der Daten des Mikrozensus weist darauf hin, dass die durch die Bildungsreformen intendierte Bildungsexpansion schon vor 1960 begonnen hat. Mit dem Conditional Mean Independence Ansatz werden Schätzungen von Bildungsrenditen mit dem SOEP nach Geschlecht und Geburtskohorten für die Jahre 1985, 1991, 1998 und 2004 durchgeführt. Die Bildungsrenditen der durch die Bildungsexpansion betroffenen Jahrga¨nge sind in den neunziger Jahren wie allgemein vermutet leicht gefallen. Sie haben sich bis 2004 jedoch wieder auf das Niveau von 1985 erhöht.

Einkommensstudie: ergänzender freiwilliger Fragebogen für ein Viertel des Mikrozensus vom April 1996, 18117 Haushalte, 16% Verweigerer (2988). Die eine Beteiligung verweigernden Haushalte sind nicht zufallsverteilt. Vielmehr weisen einige im Rahmen des Mikrozensus erhobenen Merkmale eine Verbindung mit Antwortverweigerung auf. Vor allem das Qualifikationsniveau des Haushaltsvorstands und regionale Faktoren sind für das Antwortverhalten aussagekräftig. Ältere Haushalte auf dem Land mit niedrigem Einkommen und niedrigem Qualifikationsniveau weisen eine höhere Beteiligung an der Befragung auf, während in Budapest, vor allem in den Gruppen mit hohem Einkommen und hoher Qualifikation, die Quote der Antwortverweigerer hoch ist. Background: Although the health sciences have been observing the negative impact of mass unemployment on health for some time now, health reporting remains fragmentary. Methods: The 2005 microcensus was conducted as an official random sample survey. A total of 380,000 households, comprising 820,000 individuals, took part. Providing health information was optional, with a response ratio of about 85%. The Scientific Use File contains a 70% subsample of the data set. Results: As of the survey date, average annual illness rates for 2005 were 6.5% among unemployed and 26.6% among inactive persons seeking to work (not available). If unemployed and inactive persons seeking to work were pooled into the single group of "job seekers", their average annual illness rate was 8.8%. This was significantly higher than for employed individuals, whose rate was 4.4%. However, the age-standardised odds ratios decreased from 2.2 to 1.8 for female job seekers and from 2.2 to 1.6 for male job seekers after adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics, family type, household structure, education, vocational training, socioeconomic variables, disabilities, smoking status, and other factors. The children of job seekers who are the principal income earners were more than proportionally ill at the survey date, too. In multivariate model calculations, among persons who had been unemployed a year before, an illness lasting more than 12 months had the strongest impact on chances for present employment. Chances for reintegration were likewise substantially lower for persons with a disability. Conclusion: The microcensus analyses confirm the multifarious interactions between health and occupational status. Unemployment constitutes a present challenge for public health.

Educational expansion, the massive increase of women's labor force participation, and assortative mating have reduced asymmetries in educational achievements and in career resources between women and men in virtually every Western society. This paper provides an analysis of the association between partners' education, parenthood, and spouses' relative labor supply in East and West Germany. Education is considered from two angles: as an indicator for resources on the labor market or as an indicator for gender attitudes. We apply cross-sectional data from the 2011 German Microcensus, comprising 57,366 couple households. For our estimations, we use General Linear Models. Because of high case numbers, we are able to estimate several interaction effects in statistical powerful detail. We find that (1) a woman's share of paid work is higher, the higher she is educated; (2) women with higher education than their male partners realize higher shares of relative employment (in comparison to other women); (3) women rarely realize a share of 50% or higher on average in any educational composition; (4) especially young children have a huge impact on women's labor supply; and (5) women's comparative educational advantages are more important for their share of paid work in West than in East Germany. Neither interpretation of relative education can explain the overall picture of couples' division of paid work alone. Depending on parenthood, the age of the youngest child in the household, and the regional context, either normative, or economic exchanges between partners seem to drive the association between relative education, and relative labor supply of women. We demonstrate the usefulness of two theoretical approaches of framing education as an explanatory concept.

'Bislang gibt es kaum Studien, welche die Entwicklung und das Ausmaß von Kinderlosigkeit in Deutschland in umfassender Weise empirisch untersuchen. Ein wesentlicher Grund hierfür dürfte die unzureichende Datenlage sein. Der vorliegende Arbeitsbericht beschreibt auf Basis von Mikrozensusdaten die Entwicklung der bildungsspezifischen Kinderlosigkeit von deutschen Frauen in Westdeutschland für die Geburtskohorten 1951 bis 1968. Neben dem Bildungsniveau werden auch die Erwerbsbeteiligung und der Familienstand von Frauen als zentrale Erklärungsfaktoren von Kinderlosigkeit herangezogen. Der Vorteil des Mikrozensus ist zweifellos der im Vergleich zu wissenschaftsbasierten Erhebungen sehr große Stichprobenumfang, der auch die Betrachtung von eher kleinen Subpopulationen erlaubt. Allerdings stößt die Analyse von Kinderlosigkeit mit Mikrozensusdaten auch auf zentrale Beschränkungen. Diese Beschränkungen werden im vorliegenden Papier gleichfalls thematisiert und in Hinblick auf die Konsequenzen für die Analyse diskutiert.' (Autorenreferat)

Whereas variance in preferences is a central explanation for human behaviour in the social sciences, economists traditionally avoid using preferences to explain behaviour. Rather, change in behaviour or different kinds of behaviour are explained solely by differences in the economic restrictions imposed on an individual. Whereas restrictions have been analysed as monetary constraints in traditional economics, Gary Becker has broadened this term. In his work, he tried to integrate 'time' - the non-monetary restriction - into the economic constraints. In our paper we test empirically the effects of monetary and time restrictions on the travel-mode choice of a representative sample of the German population. We do this by means of testing some hypotheses from Becker's work on microcensus data from Germany. These data include the following variables: travel-mode choice, distance of travel, time of travel, as well as some additional socioeconomic characteristics. Results of introducing these additional socioeconomic variables will also raise the question whether it is really true that only monetary and time costs matter.

"In 2004 Germany's Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt, Destatis) started the recruitment of an access panel (AP) from participantes in the German microcensus (MC), a large household survey. This access panel, a pool of persons willing to take part in voluntary surveys, currently serves as the sampling frame for the DE-SILC, the German subsample of the European Union Statistic on Income and Living Conditions. Sampling from panelists rather than directly from the population promised lower survey costs due to easy access to the AP participants and higher response rates. While participation in the MC is mandatory by law, joining the AP is voluntary. Approx. 10 percent of the MC households agree to enter the panel. In this work we examine the recruitment from the 2006 MC using socio-economic and demographic characteristics available in both the AP and the MC to explore the selectivity of the recruitment process. We also discuss the implications of German privacy protection legislation for this analysis. Finally we consider the longitudinal use of the AP in a methodological discussion on the question whether samples from the AP can be regarded as probability samples from the general population." Vergleicht man die erzielten Schulabschlüsse, so schneiden junge Menschen mit Migrationserfahrung insgesamt deutlich schlechter ab als gleichaltrige Einheimische. Dies ergeben Berechnungen mit den repräsentativen Daten des Mikrozensus für Migrantenkinder, die zwischen Ende der 1980er und Anfang der 2000er Jahre als Minderjährige in die Bundesrepublik kamen und hier zur Schule gingen. So schaffen von diesen Personen nur 26 Prozent das Abitur. Auch die PISA-Studien zeigen, dass Kinder aus Zuwandererfamilien überdurchschnittlich häufig zu den Leistungsschwächeren zählen. Die Autorin unterscheidet in ihrer Auswertung der Mikrozensus-Daten von 2005 die Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund nicht nach Herkunftsland, sondern stellt die Aussiedler als Gruppe allen übrigen Migranten gegenüber. Aussiedler erhalten direkt nach der Einwanderung die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft. Der Vergleich zeigt, dass Kinder von Aussiedlern häufiger als Kinder von Zuwanderern ohne deutschen Pass die Schule mit der mittleren Reife abschließen. Die Auswertung der Mikrozensus-Daten verdeutlicht zudem das höhere Bildungsstreben der Aussiedler beziehungsweise ihrer in Deutschland geborenen Kinder: Der Anteil der Oberstufenschüler sowie derjenigen mit akademischem Abschluss liegt sogar über dem Wert der Einheimischen. Jugendliche aus Aussiedlerfamilien sind seltener erwerbslos und auch seltener von öffentlichen Leistungen abhängig als Einheimische. (ICI).
