Letters and an article from the World Interpreter addressing the Hopi way of life and the Selective Services. The first item is Thomas Jenkins' statement to a judge at the time of receiving his second prison sentence, 1944. Jenkins discusses the Hopi government which has been established long before America was discovered, as well as the Hopi desire to keep their way of life and land free from foreign elements. The second item is an article entitled "Hopi Indians Demand Own Way of Life" as it appeared in the World Interpreter in 1953. The article addresses the Hopi traditional way of life and the Hopi unwillingness to follow the white man's ways. The third item is a letter to Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, director of the U.S. Selective Services from Chief Dan Katchgonva. The letter discusses the Hopi religious objection to war and violence, and that the Hopi traditional way of life has been disregarded without consent by drafting Hopi men. Katchgonva requests a visit from Hershey to discuss the fundamental principles of life so they can find an understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: The Ammon Hennacy Associates were Quaker activists Virginia Anderson and George Yamada who in the 1950s wrote letters on behalf of the Hopi to United States Government leaders from the BIA to the Justice Department. Anderson was an Arizona State University Instructor in Social Work and Psychology and George Yamada, was a World War II draft resister.

Many books have been written on Mennonite history, but these deal largely with the religious aspect of their life. The purpose of this thesis is to present the social, moral, economic and political aspects of their migrations and life, not only of their early centuries, but of the present time. Only enough of the religious element will be presented to give a general modern knowledge of their religious beliefs which in turn influence their life in general. Particularly will it be stressed how these people have influenced the history of Kansas. This thesis was written for the purpose of preserving early Kansas history, and I was granted that subject because of my personal acquaintances with many of the early Mennonite settlers making it possible to present sketches of their intimate life that probably a stranger would not have been able to secure.
