This paper reports on a questionnaire survey of 1146 ethical investors in the UK. Ethical investing usually means that certain companies are excluded from one's portfolio on non-economic grounds, e.g. because they manufacture armaments, test chemicals on live animals, or have poor pollution records. Is this an example where moral commitment rather than economics is driving economic decision making? Ethical investors were found to be neither cranks nor saints holding both ethical and not so ethical investments at the same time. A case is made that people are prepared to put their money where their morals are although there is no straightforward trade-off between principles and money. A broader analysis than that based on rational economic man is recommended: an economic psychology.

U.S. immigration policy has a beneficent intent. However, recent work suggests that the signal it sends internationally – that emigration can be relied upon to relieve local (Third World) population pressure – tends to maintain high fertility rates in the sending country. This effect is counterproductive because high fertility is the primary driver of rapid population growth. In addition, it appears that the relatively open U.S. immigration policy has resulted in a rate of domestic population growth that threatens both the well-being of American labor and cherished environmental values.

'Korruption ist nicht deswegen ethisch negativ oder gesellschaftlich schädlich zu bewerten, weil sie gegen geltende Gesetze verstößt. Die Auswirkungen von Normen und Gesetzen können gesellschaftlich und wirtschaftlich ambivalent sein und sich auch im Zeitverlauf ändern. Für die Bewertung von Korruption muss daher ein nichtnormativer Ansatz gewählt werden. Für die Bewertung der Konsequenzen von Korruption lassen sich eine Reihe von empirischen und theoretischen Befunden und Meinungen heranziehen, die sich weitgehend auf quantifizierbare Effekte beziehen. Zu den schädlichen Wirkungen gehören beispielsweise, dass der Preis auf Märkten steigt, weil der Wettbewerb verzerrt wird, oder dass Qualitätsmängel bei Gütern oder Dienstleistungen auftreten. Zwar werden in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur überwiegend die schädlichen Wirkungen von Korruption betont, es werden aber auch positive Konsequenzen genannt wie etwa die Beschleunigung administrativer Leistungen beim so genannten Speed Money. Es lässt sich sogar zeigen, dass Korruption nicht automatisch eine pareto-ineffiziente Allokation nach sich ziehen muss. Der Beitrag verschiedener soziologischer Richtungen zur Korruptionstheorie kann insbesondere darin bestehen, die nicht-quantifizierbaren Effekte von Korruption aufzuzeigen. Fasst man Korruption i.S.d. Handlungstheorie als eine Interaktionssequenz zwischen einem Prinzipal, einem Agenten (der für ihn arbeitet) und einem Klienten, der den Agenten besticht, dann lassen sich die schädlichen Auswirkungen von Korruption in einem größeren Rahmen deutlich machen. Korruption kann dann als gesellschaftlich negatives Sozialkapital definiert werden, das destabilisierend wirkt, weil es der Gesellschaft die Vertrauensgrundlage entzieht, die für ihre Existenz lebensnotwendig ist. Fehlendes Vertrauen kann nicht quantifiziert und nicht substituiert werden. Die Un-Ethik von Korruption wird auf diese Weise besser approximiert als über die juristische Tatsache, dass Akteure gegen geltendes Recht verstoßen haben.' (Autorenreferat)

The European Group on Ethics and New Technologies, which advises the European Commission, has published an opinion paper on ethical aspects of genetic testing in the workplace. The paper goes well beyond the usual ethical issues, presenting a summary of genetic testing in the workplace in the United States and Europe and criteria for appropriate testing. Unlike many other documents on ethics, it pays close attention to the problem of false-positive and false-negative test results. Although no genetic tests are currently appropriate for screening workers or applicants for jobs in which occupational hazards exist, inappropriate testing has occurred and regulations are needed to ensure that only appropriate testing is used in the future. Workers or their representatives should be involved in deciding when and how genetic testing in the workplace is done.

In this article, we address some of the ways that ethical issues have been confronted and avoided in the social work profession and argue that a social constructionist perspective allows for the generation of principles for a practice that foregrounds critical thinking and a value-based ethical stance. We outline these principles and consider them in relation to the special issues that arise in practice with lesbians and gay men.
