¿Cómo un grupo de madres de jóvenes detenidos ilegalmente y posteriormente asesinados por la dictadura argentina de 1976-1983, lograron organizar y protestar durante este período de severa represión estatal? ¿Bajo qué condiciones un individuo racional escogería arriesgar su vida participando en actividades colectivas sometidas al problema del polizón? Combinando las ideas de un modelo de provisión de bienes públicos y la teoría de la confianza del interés encapsulado, demuestro que a pesar de los altos niveles de incertidumbre y riesgo involucrados en la participación, la acción colectiva fue posible gracias a compromisos mutuos creíbles inherentes a la participación y debido a la provisión de incentivos selectivos de los miembros. Estos hallazgos son confirmados por desarrollos posteriores: una vez que se produjo una transición democrática y los niveles de riesgo e incertidumbre disminuyeron, el grupo se dividió en dos asociaciones diferentes. ; How did a group of mothers of youngsters who had been illegally detained and murdered by Argentina's 1976-1983 dictatorship, manage to organize and protest during this period of severe state repression? Under what conditions would a rational individual choose to risk her life by engaging in collective activities subjected to the free rider problem? Combining the insights of a step public goods model and the encapsulated-interest theory of trust, I show that in spite of the high levels of uncertainty and risk involved in participation, collective action was possible given credible mutual commitments inherent in participation, and due to the provision of selective incentives to the members. These findings are con- firmed by later developments: once a democratic transition ocurred and the risk and uncertainty levels diminished, the group split into two different associations.

The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo is one of the most important social organizations in Latin America and the world due to its contributions to the construction of historical memory throughout their thirty-five years of work defending human rights. For this reason, it has been studied widely in the social sciences, including historical, political, legal, socio-cultural, and, of course, gender analyses. On the basis of a review of the history of the consolidation of the movement, this article discusses the "socialization of motherhood" as a political proposal of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo. ; El Movimiento de Madres de Plaza de Mayo es una de las organizaciones sociales de mayor importancia y trascendencia en América Latina y en el mundo debido a sus aportes en la construcción de la memoria histórica a lo largo de treinta y cinco años de persistencia en la defensa de los derechos humanos. Por esta razón ha sido estudiada ampliamente por diversas disciplinas de las ciencias sociales que integran análisis históricos, políticos, jurídicos, socioculturales y por supuesto de género. A partir de un recorrido por la historia de la consolidación de este movimiento social, este artículo plantea reflexiones sobre la "Socialización de la maternidad" como propuesta política de las Madres de Plaza de Mayo.

A partir de la presidencia de Néstor Kirchner algunos organismos del movimiento de derechos humanos de Argentina decidieron progresivamente acompañar las políticas de Estado y, en algunos casos, incorporarse a las estructuras gubernamentales. Entre estos se destaca la Asociación Madres de Plaza de Mayo de Argentina, que históricamente ha confrontado con el Estado y los distintos gobiernos, tras el retorno de la democracia en 1983. En este trabajo se analizan algunos aspectos de los cambios en las estrategias, marcos de acción colectiva y claves interpretativas acerca del Estado y la política que elabora esta asociación durante el periodo 2003-2010, con el objetivo de comprender los factores que explican el pasaje de una estrategia dominante de confrontación a una de integración al Estado por parte de esta organización, tal vez la más emblemática del movimiento de derechos humanos de Argentina. Para su realización se utilizan fuentes de información primaria, especialmente discursos y documentos de la organización seleccionados entre la enorme cantidad de material que ha producido la Asociación Madres de Plaza de Mayo, y fuentes secundarias como diarios y revistas argentinas de circulación nacional. ; From the presidency of Nestor Kirchner some agencies of the human rightsmovement in Argentina decided to progressively follow state politics and, in somecases, be incorporated into government structures. These highlighted the Mothersof Plaza de Mayo, which had historically confronted with the state and the variousgovernments since the return of democracy in 1983.This paper discusses some aspectsof the changes in strategies, collective action frames and key interpretations aboutstate and politics that produced this association during the period 2003-2010 withthe aim of: Understanding the factors behind the passage of a dominant strategy ofconfrontation to one of integration to the state by the organization, perhaps, the mostemblematic of the human rights movement in Argentina.To carry out the primarysources of information used, especially speeches and documents of the organizationselected from the vast amount of material that has produced the Mothers of Plazade Mayo and secondary sources such as newspapers and magazines of nationalcirculation in Argentina.

El artículo aborda una comparación diacrónica entre las prácticas y los resultados políticos y legales en los ámbitos nacional e internacional de las Madres de Plaza de Mayo en Argentina entre 1977 y 1980, y el Movimiento de Víctimas de Crímenes de Estado en Colombia entre 2005 y 2008. El actuar de estos movimientos ha plasmado los antecedentes y recopilado la evidencia que ha permitido la construcción de comisiones de la memoria en sus respectivos países. Luego de finalizada la última dictadura cívico-militar, las Madres de Plaza de Mayo dieron inicio a una nueva etapa de lucha contra la impunidad que las posicionó en confrontación con los gobiernos que hegemonizaron la Argentina hasta los primeros años del siglo XXI. A partir de un análisis político del discurso, en este artículo nos detendremos en el análisis de las reconfiguraciones identitarias de la Asociación Madres de Plaza de Mayo entre los años 1983 y 2003. Para ello indagaremos en la radicalidad que alcanzó su lucha en el período mencionado y en los nuevos contenidos y referentes que se inscribieron durante su resistencia al neoliberalismo. ; After the last civil-military dictatorship, the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo began a new stage of struggle against impunity that placed them in confrontation with the governments that hegemonized Argentina until the first years of the 21st century. From a political analysis of the discourse, in this article we will stop in the analysis of the identity reconfigurations of the Mothers Association of Plaza de Mayo between the years 1983 and 2003. En 2003 resultó electo presidente de Argentina el Dr. Nestor Kirchner. Desde entonces algunas organizaciones del Movimiento de Derechos Humanos comenzaron a acercarse al gobierno que, a su vez, se mostró receptivo a sus demandas. En el trabajo que aquí se presenta se analizan las posiciones de la Asociación Madres de Plaza de Mayo ante el gobierno de Néstor Kirchner, con el objetivo de aproximarnos a comprender los cambios en su relación con el gobierno y el Estado. Para la realización de este trabajo se utilizaron discursos, diarios y revistas argentinas, documentos y entrevistas a miembros de esta organización. ; In 2003 Nestor Kirchner was elected president of Argentina. Since then some organizations of the Human Rights Movement began to approach the government which, in turn, was receptive to their demands. In this essay we state and analyze the positions of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo towards the government of Nestor Kirchner, aiming to understand the nature of their relationship towards government and the State, and analyze how it changed. This article addresses the story of a photograph that was used as a symbol of a possible reconciliation between the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo and the military dictatorship in Argentina. On October 5, 1982, eight human rights organizations jointly called for a mobilization to demand the return, alive, of the detained and disappeared. That day a photograph was produced that appeared to show a hug between a policeman and a mother. The photograph had immediate media significance and was used to support a supposed policy of reconciliation between human rights organizations and the repressive forces, which in reality never existed. In turn image's uses and interpretations allow us to analyze both the limitations and the possibilities of press photography when constituting itself as evidence and at the same time as a symbol of an event. The controversial nature and the success in journalistic and photographic terms places this image as a privileged object of study to analyze the relationship between dictatorship, media and photography as well as to reflect on the capacity of an image to dispute the historical meaning of a fact and to influence the public opinion. ; Este artículo aborda la historia de una fotografía que se utilizó como símbolo de una posible reconciliación entre las Madres de Plaza de Mayo y la dictadura militar en Argentina. El 5 de octubre de 1982, ocho organismos de derechos humanos convocaron en forma conjunta a una movilización en reclamo por la aparición con vida de los detenidos-desaparecidos. Ese día se produjo una fotografía que aparentaba mostrar un abrazo entre un policía y una madre. La fotografía tuvo inmediata trascendencia mediática y se utilizó para sostener una supuesta política de reconciliación entre las organizaciones de derechos humanos y las fuerzas represivas que, en los hechos, jamás existió. Sus usos e interpretaciones permiten analizar tanto las limitaciones como las posibilidades de la fotografía periodística a la hora de constituirse como prueba y, al mismo tiempo, como símbolo de un acontecimiento. El carácter polémico y el éxito en términos periodísticos y fotográficos ubican esta imagen como un objeto de estudio privilegiado para analizar la relación entre dictadura, medios y fotografía, así como para reflexionar sobre la capacidad de una imagen para disputar el sentido histórico de un hecho y de influir en la opinión pública.

The objective of this work is to reflect upon the trajectories and experiences of political participation of the women who were part of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo movement, focusing onthe period prior to their incorporation into the organization, based on the cases of two of their members: Adelina Dematti and Aída Bogo. Their experiences of participation in different areas of the public sphere were recovered and the politicization of their trajectories linked to the private spheres and the world of labor were analyzed. How they narrate the experience of their incorporation into the organization was identified. This approach will help to highlight that even when these women have been recognized as central agents and protagonists of the resistance to the dictatorship, their trajectories of prior political participation were invisibilized. It will also give account of the political dimensions of the spheres socially denominated as «private». A qualitative approach was adopted to enquire intothe meanings that both women built around the events they went through, based on carrying out and analyzing interviews. The Adelina Dematti de Alaye Documental fund, a member of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo-La Plata, was also consulted. ; Este trabajo tiene como objetivo reflexionar en torno a lastrayectorias y las experiencias de participación política de las mujeres que conformaron el movimiento de Madres de Plaza de Mayo (MPM), centrándose en el periodo previoa la incorporación a la organización; a partir de los casos de dos de sus integrantes: Adelina Dematti y Aída Bogo. Recuperamos sus experiencias de participación en diferentes ámbitos de la esfera pública y analizamos la politicidad de sus trayectorias ligadas a las esferas privadas y al mundo del trabajo. During the year 1984, judicial causes of irregular burials carried out in Argentinian cemeteries during the last dictatorship began to reactivate. However, the judges who started to carry out the exhumations were mainly the same ones who had intervened in the burial of those bodies, or rejected the relatives as complainants. In the case of Mar del Plata, Judge Pedro Hooft - designated in 1976 by decree of the governor of the Province of Buenos Aires, Iberian Saint Jean - ordered to perform exhumations at Cemetery Park in 1985, which were promoted by different relatives of detained-disappeared of the city. On the other hand, the Association Mothers of Plaza de Mayo Branch Mar del Plata -founded in 1984- was against it, considering that it was a political measure that blocked the investigations that had to be carried out on those responsible for the crimes against humanity committed during the dictatorship. The analysis of this episode allows us to approach, on the one hand, to the link between the subsidiary and those responsible for conducting the organization and, on the other hand, the relationship between the local subsidiary and the other human rights organizations in the city. Durante el año 1984 comenzaron a reactivarse causas por inhumaciones irregulares realizadas en cementerios de la Argentina durante la última dictadura. No obstante, los jueces que comenzaron a llevar adelante las exhumaciones eran en gran medida los mismos que habían intervenido en la inhumación de esos cuerpos o rechazado a los familiares como querellantes. En el caso de Mar del Plata, el juez Pedro Hooft -nombrado en 1976 por decreto del gobernador de facto de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, Ibérico Saint Jean- dio la orden de realizar exhumaciones en Cementerio Parque en 1985, la cual fue promovida por distintos familiares de detenidos-desaparecidos de la ciudad. On April 30, 1977, at 3:30 in the afternoon a historical transformation began in Argentina. This transformation was carried out by Argentinean women acting in the social and political spheres against a military regime that directly affected them and their futures. The Mothers of La Plaza de Mayo have reshaped the concepts of motherhood, feminism, activism, resistance, and social action in Argentina and the rest of the world. This study looks at the Mothers of La Plaza de Mayo as a peace movement instead of a human rights movement, resistance movement, or feminist movement, as it has been previously analyzed. Looking at the literature analyzing peace movements and nonviolent direct action, I propose that the Mothers of La Plaza de Mayo should be seen as a peace movement.
