Doing Justice to Zacarias Moussaoui: Neither a Madman nor an Aspiring Martyr but an Enemy
In: Policy review: the journal of American citizenship, Heft 146, S. [np]
ISSN: 0146-5945
Argues that the established media failed the US public in their coverage of the case of Zacarias Moussaoui & that as a result of this the readily accessible record of the case is "disastrously skewed." It is contended that the major media misled the public even when it came to small & essentially irrelevant details. The problematic attention that the media gave to Moussaoui's childhood is addressed, asserting that the virtual childhood the media created bears little relation to his actual experience. The media's perpetuation of the myth that Moussaoui actively sought the death penalty so as to become a martyr is discussed. Lessons learned from the trial are put forth, highlighting the fact that the 9/11 attacks were acts of war rather than "banal crimes." Ultimately, the trial is construed as a "wasted opportunity" for the US to learn the degree to which the jihadists hate it. Adapted from the source document.
